I headcanon that, in certain clans that greatly value noble birth and hierarchy, wing binding was once a common practice. High-born dragons will have their wings tied with ornamental cloths, often from childhood; this is partly as aesthetic. The idea is that these dragon will never need their wings; they have sufficient power and authority to make somebody do their flying for them; they can live a comfortable life free of physical exertion. The downside to this is, that they will never be able to fly; bound wings are stunted, both from lack of use and from the tight straps preventing them from growing properly. This is quickly falling out of favor; changing times and cultures call wingbinding “barbaric,” and some powerful clans are demanding the removal of all bindings.

In other clans, wingbinding is less noble; it is often a punishment for criminals, and Beastclans(as well as some dragon clans) will bind the wings of their dragon slaves. These bindings are far less ornamental, and serve one purpose alone: to restrain, prevent escape, render helpless. Bound wings are a great shame, and even should the slave flee, the deep scars will never heal.
