In the time he spent lost in Wrath before being found and taken in by his adoptive mother, Zal got caught in a (presumably rare in that ring) storm. While the thunder, lightning and heavy rain scared him a lot, as children tend to be, the smell that came from water hitting the ground helped him calm down quite a bit, and it's still quite a soothing scent to him in the present day.
