if there is ever a song that invokes a strong feeling of the character, shiranui’s theme always comes to mind. the song always brought me chills while playing the game, & always so perfectly encapsulates the very feeling of encountering shiranui for the first time.

   shiranui had been observing the youth from afar, shrouded by trees and masked by the long growing grass. the outcries of dying spirits and withering flora had drawn them here, forced them far from their dear nippon and through the spirit gate into a realm in desperate need of immediate help. an ancient darkness cloaked this realm much like their own, suffocating life and polluting it with its shadows.

   and then, they had come across this boy, irreversibly intertwined with light and darkness, his shadow haunted by one of the demons that had cursed this world. yet, within him they sensed a holy mission, a destiny locked into the fate of whether or not the realm would succumb to the twilight, or be reborn anew in light.

   three days now they had been tailing him, observing, monitoring; killing the demons that came near and cataloging if the boy was what the spirits cried out for. if he was the savior.

shiranui’s statue displays simplistic markings, & when amaterasu is reborn, she does not bear the traditional markings that shiranui wore. with the villagers only slim glance at shiranui’s godly form, their faith only restored by the wolf’s sacrifice, they were granted only a few moments of seeing his true form until it all disappeared in his death, leaving him a plain white wolf. the statue recreated what they had seen, or rather, something similar. unable to recall the exact intricacies of the holy markings on his body, they replicated it in a manner that still paid homage, but did not have to delve too deeply into the very details of it. it is also why they did not include solar flare, as none of the villagers could exactly recall how it looked. amaterasu’s current appearance is also how the celestial gods will appear. likewise, when amaterasu became fully restored & her true self, the gods altered appearance as well.

during his long wait for the hero nagi to be born, shiranui spent his time patrolling & pacing kamiki. the tiny hamlet was defenseless, & before the warrior was alive, it was primarily comprised of simple hunters, women, & children. their archaic weaponry wasn’t enough to defend them from the jaws of demons that sought to pick apart those who orochi did not claim. in the dead of night, husbands would be stolen from their families, children snatched away when going out for a drink of water. while knowing very well that he could not combat orochi until the warrior nagi was born & fully grown, shiranui did his best to still protect the village. as the villagers saw him as another demon coming to take away their loved ones, he walked their streets & kept at bay the demons too fearful of his power to challenge him. it was in fact shiranui who allowed nagi’s mother to one day birth him, saving her as a young girl from a group of imps that had dragged her out into the forest. she was one of the few that looked on in wonder at the grand white beast, one of the few to bear an inkling that perhaps he was not yet another of orochi’s followers.

just beat okami for something around the hundred & fifteenth time. is currently riding the feels train straight into the sun.

Wiggles fingers at the giant "dog." Will he sniff his hand??

   shiranui began to wag their tail, the god inquisitively sniffing at the inviting fingers. was this a kindly gesture?they sensed no ill will, and in fact, this one felt rather pure, bearing a charming, boyish glow that was borderline naive.drawn to such purity, unable to resist, shiranui gently padded forward, and pushed their cheek into the warm, inviting palm.

    WHAT A LOVELY DOG this was. They almost resembled a wolf, though he knew that couldn’t be the case. Wolves wandering around in cities? Besides, there were no more wolves in Japan except for within zoos. He idly wondered how they became a stray, though he supposed that wasn’t really important information. There were plenty of strays that wandered the streets of Tokyo, so perhaps if this dog was lucky, someone would adopt them. He certainly would have loved to if his apartment allowed for such a thing, and if he wasn’t so busy. Amon smiled a bit wider at the small woof that came, almost as if the dog was agreeing with him when it came to food.

     ❝Well then, if you’re still hungry, maybe I can get a beef bowl. Would you like that?❞ As if he could resist the urge to help this beast. He’d make sure they were content for the rest of the day if he could help it. That was the most he could do for them, though he hoped they’d be grateful regardless. If Amon could make sure this dog was never hungry, he most certainly would have attempted. ❝It’s a shame a beautiful dog like you doesn’t have a home.❞

   shiranui barked their agreement, eyes instantly brightening at the idea of being given something with beef. beef! the lupine part of their mind was already drooling at the idea of getting some meat in them, even if the other half lamented somewhat at the loss of life. but this was the cycle, and like the cycle of life, their reasoning and justification for this unnecessary consumption (they were of a GODLY STATUS, food wasn’t needed for them to sustain themselves) promptly came full circle. dancing on their paws, trotting somewhat away to encourage him to get up, shiranui barked again.

   home? the world itself was their home, they were certainly never without companionship during their travels. the winds sang to them, and the grass whispered their secrets unto them. they were never lonely.

   but they were aching for that beef bowl, and thus, reached out and began to tug on the man’s pant leg.

     THIS POOR DOG. HE wondered how long they had gone without food. Was this a stray? They were quite a bit around the city, so he wasn’t too surprised if that was the case. At least he had alleviated their hunger a little, even if that roll wasn’t a large meal. Laughing softly, he couldn’t help the large smile that came to him at the other’s affectionate actions. Gently he slid his hands through soft fur, scratching the dog behind the ears. ❝I’m glad I managed to make you so happy. I’m sorry I don’t have more to give you, though.❞ Not that the beast seemed bothered by this fact. They seemed grateful regardless of the tiny snack they were given.

   pushing their head against the affectionate touches, shiranui’s tail was going a mile a minute, absolutely thrilled to find such a kind soul. there were darker aspects of his man, irreversibly intertwined with his soul, but those were not naturally created. as they pressed their cheek against the man’s knee, their mind searched for an inherent evil (yet, it wasn’t so black and white; all of it was gray, everyone had a reason for what they do), and found nothing born of the man’s own accord.    it was all planted by an outside source, left to slowly begin to bloom, rancid and rotting. resting their cheek, shiranui toyed with the idea of being able to purify him, but knew that it was out of their power. it was not a destiny for them to tamper with. for now, they would simply enjoy his company, softly woofing their agreement with a lack of more food. more food was always good.

known as the mother deity, shiranui is regarded by his worshipers as being sexed as female, due to the connection of the sun’s mothering, gentle ways in nurturing the earth. while content with this status, shiranui is in fact without any gender identification. sexual identity is unnecessary for a god who is not required to breed to keep their species alive, as even in death, they will be reborn anew once their energy is recovered. however, when their physical form came into creation, it had been molded into the image of what their soul was most like at the time. it is why shiranui’s physical form is that of a WOLF, for while they could choose any other creature, it was the wolf they felt the deepest bond to. this physical form is technically male, most easily recognized in the bulkiness of the shoulders & front, & in the heavy muscle lining their body in comparison to the sleek reborn amaterasu. their soul, capable of aligning to either gender or neither at all, felt most at kin within a male wolf’s form. despite this, any pronouns for the wolf are suitable.

The Sun Rises 

This is, without a doubt, my favourite moment in video gaming. Okami represents everything I love and believe about video games as art and I always look forward to playing it.

   pushed away, shiranui feigned disappointment, only to perk up instantly when the man dug into his pocket. tail wagging fervently, sitting patiently, they drew tense when the sweetroll appeared, eyes almost glittering with excitement. drool hit the ground the moment shiranui’s mouth opened, snapping up the bit tossed to them and swallowing it down without so much as tasting it. perhaps they hadn’t been as truly patient as they had appeared.    tail still going, shiranui rose to their paws, the kami rubbing their cheek against the man’s hand in appreciation. blessed man.

      Kent’s expression froze for a few seconds as he watched the light show. Now that was something he couldn’t just wave off as a trick of the eyes. Part of him was considering turning the wolf over to his superiors. Certainly they’d take him seriously after being presented with an undeniably magical dog, right? Kent squinted. 

      Why would he ever hand over a magical dog? Well, wolf, rather, but Kent was still ignorant to what distinguished the two. Whatever it was compelling him to keep the secret– childlike fascination, rebellion, possessiveness (the ‘whatever’ was certainly infantile) –it was strong enough to overcome Kent’s desires to be promoted.

      “…You know what, I’ve decided. You can come with me. Do you know how to heel, boy?” Kent walked a few paces, looking back at his new friend over his shoulder. He pat his leg. “Heel?”

   something in the man seemed to click. the puzzle pieces fell into place, parting the fog and revealing that which he had not previously connected. sensing a shift in demeanor, something less innocent and more curious stirring forth, shiranui cocked their head, watching the man with studious eyes.    where did he even plan on taking them? did he expect him to slip easily into a leash and collar, to play pretend and be obedient? they was untameable, and the man would have just as much luck trying to capture the breeze as he would attempting to collar shiranui.

   but, shiranui was incapable of foretelling the future, and could not foresee if this was truly kent’s intentions. for the time being, they minded, trotting after him, before glancing up expectantly.
