The final layers...
With instrumental tracking coming to a close in the form of Björn's last few lead licks and solos, focus could finally be turned to the vocals. Round 2 of the recording process for Oli!
For the first time in the studio, we got to pay attention to a range of different mics and pre-amps to harness the best tone out of Oli's voice. Focusing first on the choruses, then all other main vocals, before moving on to harmonies and general backing vocals, six days spent in the isolation booth produced the results!
Which means that you're all pretty much caught up with where we're at now! Tracking is all done and dusted and the whole thing is now being mixed and mastered to get the songs sounding as awesome as possible. We still have a huge number of things to accomplish before we get any closer to revealing this record to everyone, but we definitely feel on track for coming good on our promise to produce something special!
Someone ordered melodic sprinkles...
With the rhythm section all sown up and sounding tight, it was time to add some 'melodic sprinkles'. Time for a lead guitarist with more hair than you'll ever grow ever, Björn!
At this point of the recording, we really started noticing how much of a help our demo production sessions had been. Layer after layer of lead guitar was put down expertly by Björn and the tracks really started to sound like they were coming together. The last 8 days in the studio were shared between Björn's lead duties and Oli's vocal sessions (see next update).
Needs a bit of low end...
Remaining at Whitehouse studios with Justin Hill, the completion of rhythm guitars signalled the need for something to keep the kick drum company at the low end of the tracks. Arriving to provide the meaty bass tones, Luke!
Tone was the first thing on our minds again, using a Musicman Stingray coupled with a Marshall bass stack to search for the ultimate mix of beef, clarity and edge. Across three days, Luke laid down his tracks to complete the rhythm section of the album!
Time for the melodies...
After three days of hard work in the drum studios, the tracks were sounding huge but decidedly rhythmic. As we moved the project to Whitehouse Studios in Reading, it fell to Oli to add some melody to the mix!
We spent the first half-day searching for the ultimate rhythm guitar tone. Trying various combinations of a Mesa Dual Rectifier and a Blackstar Series One (through multiple speaker cabs, mics and pre-amps) took a while, but the tone we arrived at is really something special! We lovingly named it the "quadro-franken-tone", for reasons which we'll explain in our album PDF documentary (exclusive to Kickstarter backers).
After four days of dirty, clean and crunchy tones, the rhythm guitars were done and dusted!
And now the real work begins...
It's been almost a month since you wonderful people helped us raise over £9.5k in support of Project "Transitions". First off, we're very sorry to have kept you this long for the first update, however we have wasted no time in getting down to business! There are going to be plenty of updates for you to get excited about over the coming days, weeks and months as we continue to build this project!
The first objective in this project is to get the songs all tracked up. That meant that, for the first time ever, Declan climbed behind the kit to lay down the drums for a Fallen To Flux record. Over 3 days of working 10am to 10pm at Unit 2 Recording Studios in Wembley, he blasted his way through all 11 tracks.

Oli:
So let's say we took a winter break from the weekly blog, truth be told we just haven't had the time!
Our new EP "From The Outside, Looking In" is out NEXT TUESDAY! Exciting times, but also really busy times. We've had video shoots, photo shoots, interviews, reviews etc etc and only now am I getting the time to sit down and write to you all!
Less than a week now until we begin the next chapter of our existence. We believe that this new record will help us reach the next level of our career, so we're super psyched for you all to hear it...

Oli:
Exciting times in the Fallen To Flux camp! Video production is well under way for our lead single from the new record. Our performance bits were the first parts to be recorded; now, somewhere in Manchester, there's a set being built and some actors doing acting. It's all coming together!
In other bits and bobs, we've got the first shipment of merch coming through soon and we're in talks about our next gigs. Hopefully we'll have some exciting news for you guys on that front soon.
The centre piece of this blog though is the fact that we FINALLY have "From The Outside, Looking In" done and dusted. The completed tracks have been sent off to distributors and we have a green light for release. We considered having a standard drawn-out promotional strategy ahead of the EP coming out, but it's been so long in the making that we don't want that. We hope you don't either!
So, it's my pleasure to announce (here first), that "From The Outside, Looking In" will be released on January 20th. Get ready!
FTF Weekly - 12/12/14
Luke:
Firstly, Oli had a very successful day at Outhouse Studios, and managed to add a great many finishing touches to the E.P. So now it is sounding extra, super epic! We’re all going down on Thursday this week to do the mixing, and looking forward to being able to hear the full mix on proper speakers. If the last E.P. is anything to go by, the difference that the mix makes takes you massively by surprise, even though we wrote the tracks. I’m expecting to end up moshing away in the recording studio and getting even more psyched for the release date.
The main other news is that this Saturday we were in Manchester with Rotted Grape, recording our music video for the song Disenchanted! This is not only a great track, with a strong emotional connection for us, but the video is going to be fantastic. This time we have gone for a ‘story-board’ video, including actors and a set which is being built as we speak. This is another first for the band, and we’re super excited as we prepare to bring another video to you.
The main result of all of this work is that we are making some progress in finalising the now long-awaited (by us at least) From the Outside, Looking In. More news on merch and the mixing coming to you next week, have a great one!
FTF Weekly - 03/12/14
Oli:
Hey guys! Sorry we missed out on FTF Weekly last time out, we were crazy busy getting everything put in place for our gig on the 27th.
The good news is that the gig was awesome. After playing a sloppy show at the beginning of October, to get back on stage and play one of the tightest shows we ever have was the perfect redemption. The crowd were good - still mostly consisting of university friends and family - but they knew the words to a lot of the songs and it was great to hear them sung back at us!
Rather excitingly, I write this to you as I'm sitting on the train to Reading. And what's in Reading? OUTHOUSE! Yes, finally I'm off to finish up my vocal tracks for "From The Outside, Looking In", meaning that the music will reach all of your lovely earbuds very soon.
More exciting times for us on Saturday, as we'll be travelling up to good old Manchester to shoot a music video for the first song we're releasing off the new EP. The song is called "Disenchanted" and the video is going to contain more of a narrative this time, we can't wait to arrive on set and see how everything is going!
What all of this means is that the first song off "From The Outside, Looking In" should be on track for release very soon! This also comes with the launch of our first ever merch line, which contains quite a few items which I'm hoping you'll LOVE!
We should have one hell of an update for you next week, keep checking in for more FTF news...

Bjorn:
This weekend, I have been working quite extensively on a stage intro track. I am generally madly in love with pretentious intros to albums & shows (e.g. “Oculus ex Inferni” by Symphony X or “Red Horizon” by Galneryus), so it was only a matter of time until I made one for Fallen to Flux. For this track I synthesized quite a lot of sounds from scratch - a bombastic 808 kick (which now successfully destroys my speaker system at home), some radar bleeps and war drums among others. I even recorded the sound from a bubblewrap pop to use as a snare drum.
Compositionally, my main influences were the intro to “A nightmare to remember” by Dream Theater (frankly pretty much everything I do musically somehow connects to Dream Theater) and “Drifting” by Pomegranate Tiger. At the end of the day I arrived at a chord progression that is freaky enough to not have a key – mission accomplished!
So in the next couple of days I will blast it through as many speaker systems as possible and hope I don’t break anything. If it passes that test you can look forward to goosebumps even before we enter the stage (I’ll certainly have them)!

It's time to start using Tumblr for what it was made for: blogging! So far, we've taken you through the history of the band and member profiles for each of us. Now, we're going to begin giving you weekly updates on the inner workings of the band, brought to you each week by a different member of the band. Enjoy...
Oli:
So there's a lot of "behind the scenes" action going on in our world at the moment. The only thing we've been able to show you all is the new artwork for our recently announced EP "From The Outside, Looking In". If you haven't seen it, check it out somewhere on this website... it's frickin awesome!
In the mean time, we're going through everything else in the promotional sense. We have a photo shoot coming up at the end of this month, followed by a video shoot for one of the songs off the new record. We also have Set Sail Studios, who designed the artwork, working on a merchandise line which will be released to coincide with the EP.
We've also had our good friend Owen "Odie" Tillet release his special edition Rockcast, featuring us! Odie has been a fan ever since we released "One Chance". He's amazingly supportive and gives us plenty of airtime on his shows, we salute you Sir! Catch the rockcast here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bgpW3Gx-aiY
We're still hard at work preparing for our next gig: we play at the 229 in London on Thursday November 27th (make sure to message us if you want a £5 ticket). We've been labouring over each song in the set list individually and I know it's me saying it, but they sound better than ever. We set ourselves pretty high standards when it comes to "tightness" in our performance and I feel like we're finally touching on those heights.
Last but not least, I've been getting to grips with my new recording setup. I've got myself a couple of mics and an audio interface and I've already recorded the first song in what will become a weekly acoustic feature on our YouTube channel. Still got to mix the track and film a video to accompany it and then I can share it with you all!
Keep it metal!
From The Outside, Looking In
Over the past few months, we haven't kept it a secret that we have been recording a new EP. However, various production delays have meant that we haven't had anything to show you to prove it! Finally, we are in a position to OFFICIALLY announce our next EP, due for release in late 2014/early 2015: "From The Outside, Looking In"
Fallen to Flux are a four-piece metal band fronted by lead singer and guitarist Oli Clipsham; Guitarist Bjorn Gugu, bassist Luke Walley and drummer Chris Trem provide the backline. Their debut EP, Piece By Piece was released on 15th December, 2012. 2013’s...
Fallen To Flux - Live in London

Band Member Profile - Chris
Hi Everybody,
Last but not least, I’m the rough around the edges northerner (with Luke of course) and the drummer of the band. I occasionally go by the name Chris, but you guys can call me whatever the hell you like. I have dabbled in many instruments in my time (including vocals but you really don’t want to hear me sing any time soon) but settled on the drums because who doesn’t need more rhythm in their lives?
I started drumming when I was 9 and have never looked back since. Having a lot of different musical influences I have literally been through every stereotype you can think of.
What first got me interested was seeing a guy play for a cover band, and he later became my teacher (Paul Allen). I eventually went looking for more formal lessons in a slightly seedy basement in my local music store, Electro Music, in South Yorkshire with my teacher (Dean Cousins) who had huge prog rock influences as he sowed the seeds of rock music that led me to where I am today. I then went the complete opposite direction and became primarily a jazz drummer with my 3rd and final teacher (Ian West). Suffice to say I have had my fair share of influences and experiences in my short life!
As you will have already seen I met Oli in first year at Imperial College when we were living in the same halls, and having never liked, listened to, or even played Metal in my life I was reluctant to adapt but when I eventually embraced the Metal I found a deep rooted love and can’t believe what I was missing out on all those Years. Anything with a heavy ass bass line and spine chilling melodies have me hooked immediately.
In terms of bands, my influences are always changing and I would say I listen to pretty much anything so it would be hard to name any particular bands. When it comes to idols, I have huge love and respect for drummers like John Blackwell, Craig Blundell and Dave Weckl as all Drummer should.
Anyways, that’s me. Peace and Love!!
Band Member Profile - Luke
Hi everyone,
I’m Luke, the bassist (and occasional backing grunts) for Fallen to Flux. I come from Leeds in West Yorkshire, but have lived abroad a few times also.
I started playing guitar when I was 5, on the familiar classical guitar route taken by those with optimistic parents. I moved to electric guitar about 5 years later, and also started playing bass (though still using the same battered strat knock-off). Both instruments evolved together for many years, until I came across bands with strong bass-lines – primarily Rage Against The Machine. Tim Commerford became my main influence as a bassist, shaping my playing style into what it is today. My love is for performance, and as anyone who has seen us play will know, I normally manage to mosh harder than the crowd - challenge sent!
I was in many bands as a teenager, being one of a couple the few decent bassists in the area (a familiar situation). My first bands were rock and punk-rock, morphing into melodic metal bands as my taste developed. I have a broad musical taste including, apart from metal: blues, jazz, electronic, African/world, classical and a little (old-school only) hip-hop.
In terms of metal, I transitioned, over many years, through thrash like Megadeth and Napalm Death to melodeath metal like Killswitch Engage and In Flames. This led me to bands such as Opeth and Jethro Tull, who formed the third main stage of my metal taste: prog. Finally, this lead me to alt. metal, nu metal and djent, which I also enjoy, such as Monuments and The Haarp Machine. I currently manage to keep a rough overview of all of these sub-genres.
I came to London in 2011 to study Physics at Imperial College London. The music society there was how the band was formed, on the primary motivation of performing in London. This evolved quite quickly into the outfit you see today, as we developed a group dynamic and sound. It’s a great band to play in, with a driving love for performing, and I hope to share this with you at a gig soon.
