So I’ve seen this post without this addition several times now so I’m re-blogging this again.
Everyone “dragging” Blizzard for same-face syndrome need to get off the bandwagon and actually look at this shit.
So as the comment before me noted, they’re currently missing Mei, Zarya, Moira, Widowmaker and Ana. Likely because Mei’s face is notably rounder, Zarya’s is blockier, and Moira’s is longer and sharper, already weakening the argument.
However, look at this gif super hard. Specifically, look at the lower jawline, and the cheekbone placement. Notice how drastically it changes between characters. How Symmetra’s cheekbone is situated much higher than the others’, how Brigette’s jawline is lower and rounder than the others’. Note how some of the noses are flatter or how D.VA’s is slightly higher up on her face. And look at the eyes, how some come to the point at the ends, some are rounder and wider, some are more narrow.
Yeah, the differences are all subtle, but that’s the case for real people as well. The more your style pushes towards realism, the less you can really dramatically alter the shape of your characters’ faces, before the designs become comedic (Junkrat and Roadhog are notable examples of drastically breaking anatomy for humorous design; And of course it leads to an entirely separate conversation of why it’s considered acceptable to design men to be ugly/weird looking but not women).
Not to mention, when everyone is showing the same expression, it becomes considerably easier to pick out similarities in design. Even more so when the designs have to be confined to the same style.
There’s other things we could be critiquing Blizzard for. The insistence of “beautiful” women characters and the resulting lack of variety in body shapes for them is probably the most notable. But in terms of characters, Blizzard has given us such a variety, and designs we don’t ever see. Physically (and mentally) disabled characters, PoC from around the world, big muscular women, older women, older men, a lesbian as their flagship character! Blizzard has honestly been spoiling OW fans with fantastic characters, and to sit here and complain because a few of the women have slightly similar facial structures seems like a serious reach.
