The American for-profit prison system is a legal system of torture today and in the 50s-60s it was a legal system of torture less comparable to modern methods and more comparable to medieval ones, especially in the southwest. Prisoners in the 21st century have been boiled to death in showers and eaten alive in termite infested cells: more regularly, they are driven mad by prolonged solitary confinement and suffer lost legs arms eyes or fingers as a result of untreated medical conditions. This makes gaining employment upon release functionally impossible, which incentivizes recidivism and ensures these institutions have a fresh load of bodies to make money off of at all times. To cut costs, solitary confinement is regularly employed as the default method for “treating” mentally/physically ill or otherwise inconvenient inmates in privately owned prisons, in case you thought this was somehow necessary. “If you aren’t crazy now, see how you’ll feel after spending a year in a tiny room with nothing to do!” In the modern day it’s been recorded that inmates will catch rats, put them on leashes, and sell them as service animals to mentally ill patients who aren’t receiving treatment. In the 50s and 60s, mentally ill prisoners were often kept inside grotesque full-body casts with holes cut out to urinate and defecate through in place of treatment.

The percentage of violent offenders among these prisoners (rape and murder but also theft of all kinds and assault regardless of motivation or severity) ranges from 60% in state prisons to 7-13% in federal prisons. Private prisons are permitted to choose their inmates, and typically choose those inmates who will cost the least to corral, that being nonviolent offenders. Seven times more people are locked up for possessing drugs than for selling them, and half of all prisoners in federal prisons are there for drug “offenses.” It is estimated that between 46 and 100 thousand fully innocent people (prisoners who didn’t commit any legally defined crime) are in prison right now. On death row, this percentage actually goes up - for every eight people executed, one is fully exonerated, found to have never committed a crime in the first place. Half of all inmates across the board have a debilitating mental illness, an amount which has increased dramatically since the dismantling of the public mental health sector in the mid 1900s. Black Americans are both more likely to be sentenced to imprisonment, and more likely to be falsely convicted of a crime.

But this is a Fallout New Vegas blog so you can probably guess why I’m telling you all this. Making a gang of escaped prisoners led by a black political extremist after being forced to do hard labor in the desert a villainous faction was a stupid, thoughtless, wrongheaded narrative choice. I don’t think the circumstances under which they organized were evil! And I don’t think they’d start mindlessly taking over towns without good reason either. Try harder next time.

House treating a low intelligence Courier without any kind of ridicule or impatience always gets to me. I don't know if it's because he's lonely, or because he is patient and calculating in his attempts to manipulate the Courier, (probably a bit of both) but the way House has no problem explaining things in a way the Courier would understand and always answer politely to his often silly questions is very endearing to me.

whenever there's a raider pair in FO4 that always spawn in as either a pair of women or a pair of men I always have to make sure I clarify to them I'm killing them because they shot first and not because they're gay. In fact I support gay raiders wholeheartedly
