if you'd asked kiba how his first relationship would go, he wouldn't have thought that he'd be standing at the gates of the village saying goodbye to his partner. an indefinite goodbye, at that, because haku was never meant to stay in konoha forever. kiba knew this; or maybe he didn't let himself think about the idea of haku being anywhere but with him. selfish and needy and far too much and—
reasonable. that's what haku had said. it's not his fault for not putting a time limit on their love. it's okay to be disappointed. to be upset, even. not that kiba could really bring himself to feel anger over haku chasing their calling. he'd want to go home too, at some point. he won't fault them for that. but still, there's this scared, howling pup within him that doesn't think it can handle being left behind again. caring more than he's cared for. wanting more than he's wanted.
his thoughts are a spiraling web of too much and not enough. haku's words hardly reach his ears as he looks at them, taking in every inch of them. every line and curve of their face. the beads of tears at the corners of their eyes. they've talked about this extensively, but haku knows how his brain can get. the things it's willing to do to tear itself apart with undeserved self-resentment.
Haku pulls Kiba close and presses their forehead against his, gently brushing the tip of their nose against his in the Inuzuka greeting he’d shown them so long ago. Their voice is thick and their eyes glitter with unshed tears. “Just because I’m leaving Konoha doesn’t mean I’m leaving you.”
then why does it feel that way?
he doesn't say it, because he knows it's the emotions talking. the breath he releases is shaky, hands lifting to grip the sides of haku's clothing. zabuza is considerate enough to turn away from the little scene they create. he doesn't even rush them. not that it would matter, because kiba is going to soak up every moment with haku whether he likes it or not.
❝ i know, ❞ he says, because he does. he won't let haku leave thinking he doubts their promises. kiba lets his nose trace back and forth against haku's, breathing in shallow bouts of their scent, committing it to memory like he doesn't already have it ingrained in his senses. ❝ i just wish you didn't have to go. ❞ he's gotten too used to his days being filled with haku's presence, their laughter, their wit and their tenderness. ❝ i wish there was more... ❞ more time. less ties keeping kiba to konoha. just one more year, so that kiba can make every day count. ❝ you know. it's. i know. i know. ❞
pulling back with a deep breath, kiba looks at haku once more. sees a love that he wants to fight for. one that he has no intentions of letting go of any time soon, or even far into the future. his fingers tighten against their sides, anchoring until he has no choice but to let go. ❝ i'll be waiting for you. no matter how long it takes. ❞
