to think that during the two years mondo spent in hopes peak growing and becoming the best version of himself through the help of his peers its stripped away in the killing game's memory wipe and he's back where he started, neck deep in his insecurities and toxic masculinity, using his anger as a shield until it gets him killed. the whole thing makes me miserable

pomni prying more to try and help jax wouldnt have actually done anything. when ribbit tried to pry and help and support jax, it just pushed him further away and made things worse. abstracting was inevitable for him. idk just a thought

man that backrooms movie was crazy. because yeah, it’s about the backrooms, but it’s also about the BACK ROOMS of a broken man’s mind and his warped perception of those around him, ending up harming everyone he comes into contact with until the broken animalistic part of himself (The Pirate) kills off the last sane part of him. but its Also about how those with authority and power (ASYNC) leave people to fend for themselves as that feeds their power and control over the situation. but it’s Really About Mary and outgrowing the hold that her mother’s mental condition and behavior had over her and that no one’s the same after trauma and how the traumatized versions of themselves take over their and others lives (The Pirate killing Clarke and the Backrooms People, the different parts of Mary’s life succumbing to the Backrooms including her copy), and though you can overcome your trauma that broken part of yourself will always exist in that pain. but the REAL REAL meaning is don’t go into strange rooms that appear in your basement after you’ve been drinking

I feel like the Backrooms movie is going to become another litmus test about people’s willingness to engage with a piece of media.

Because you cannot tell me that the kid who spent a summer meticulously crafting a 1:1 recreation of a demolished Texas mall for a psychological horror series on YouTube and who put so much time and effort into thinking about the psychology of The Oldest View….

…just so happened to skimp on dialogue and purpose for his cinematic debut film.

If you came away from the backrooms movie going “well there were plot and character moments in there that weren’t really explored and went nowhere” I am telling you that you are not paying attention.

This is one of those films where every line of dialogue, every odd thing you see in a frame, every unusual moment and shot composition, has a purpose and reason for being there.

And it’s not the film’s fault if you don’t wanna put in the effort to try and piece together what’s going on.

Now I’m not saying that makes it an inherently better film or something. You can still dislike it if you want. Taste is subjective. But it IS the type of movie that you get more out of the more you spend thinking about it than if you just brush off any weird moment or thing you didn’t understand as “weak writing.”

Like, I cannot stop thinking about the film and the more I do the more connections and moments I find that flesh out the world and the characters to me. Even the most innocuous little details are suddenly starting to make sense and offer up insight into the larger picture of this world…and it’s leading me to go down this conspiracy theory rabbit hole that makes its connection to the YouTube series even wilder and existentially creepier imo.

I feel like people who do that are going to get SO MUCH MORE out of this film than someone who just watches it once and shrugs their shoulders and goes “well that didn’t make sense to me.” Unpacking it all is part of the experience. That’s part of the fun. And if you don’t wanna engage with that, that’s fine. But that doesn’t make the film “bad.”

Watched the Backrooms movie. Loved it. Thought it was a great exploration of mental illness and the inability to move past bad memories. Hopped on Tumblr. Everyone’s complaining about how the black lead is too angry and mean and scary, and that he shouldn’t have the character flaws that he has, and also they’re all posting thirst traps of the little white boy who was there for 10 minutes before being unceremoniously pulled into a dark room and ripped apart offscreen. I see how it is.

Can’t really articulate it properly but. Something about Clark and the need for ownership being a repeated theme throughout the movie. Something about how he constantly emphasizing that it was his house, his store, his money that pays for everything. Or the way he refers to the copies as “furniture” and treats them as such despite the fact they do show some sentience. The way he treated Mary as a means to justify his not wanting to leave and his refusal to change. The fact that Clark eats from the copies and the Captain eats people.

The Captain’s “den” being filled with piles of clothes and pieces of the cardboard cutout it destroyed. The piles of furniture in the middle of rooms. Something about the Captain’s hostility at people that enter Backrooms possibly from seeing them as an invasion upon his space, his house, threatening change in a place he does not want it. Trying to gain control over your life by trying to own and control everything around you. Is this anything

Okay so we can all agree that the main message of this movie is that it's best to let go of your worst memories and change for the better because if you don't you'll just wind up obsessing over your memories and keep coming to the same conclusions about them...right? That was the message, right? Because I feel like that was the message.

Clark has got to be one of the best-written horror antagonists in recent memory, and the thing I love most about his character is how the film makes you understand his hardships, while at the same time not using them to justify, excuse, or downplay his actions.

You really get a clear idea of how his own hardships inspire the bad decisions he makes. And at the same time, it doesn't pull any punches in showing you the consequences of those decisions, which ultimately resulted in the creation of the Captain Clark entity.

Yes, I don't doubt that he was going through a very difficult time in his life, but it goes without saying that it doesn't give him the right to lash out at everyone and make their lives difficult. And it sure as hell didn't give him the right to take out his frustrations on his spouse or Mary!!!

That's why I love (to hate) him so much! He's not some run-of-the-mill mustache-twirling villain. He's understandable, relatable, and even sympathetic! And at the same time, the film is smart enough to not use those things that make him understandable, relatable, and sympathetic to excuse the harm and hurt he chose to inflict.

P.S. Mary's crashout on him was absolutely glorious to behold!
