May’s Artist Spotlight: Bee’s Knees

This month I throw the spotlight on a group that have a residence in my headphones and crates, Bee's Knees.

Aaron Spiro and Adam Novodor, the LA based duo, are mad young, but you may not tell based on their music. I honestly can't find a lot of info one these guys outside the fact that Spiro is in the 2017 class at USC. I guess students have to stay focused and not get caught up in the limelight.

Shot into prominence by their funky af 'Blurred Lines' remix, you may have thought it was a french electro artist a la Fred Falke. The song possessed a simple but happy piano line with synth stabs that made you lean into whatever dance move you were performing at the time. With guitar riffs and a slapped bass line that most certainly belonged in a modern day Soul Train video, it was easy to see that the sky was the limit for these dudes.

They debuted their solo effort Variety Pack EP for FREE and it did not disappoint. In fact, it delivered one of my favorite tracks to spin, Old School (feat. Monogem). They were quiet for a bit, but dropped another fresh track last month called Give It To You with Niko The Kid.

So what's their music make you do?

Their music synthesizes multiple genres. Rather than place them into one, it may be easier to describe what their music makes me do. Almost every track makes me bob my head, two-step, and close my eyes. The only variables in movement are the height and use of my hands based on the energy of the song.

In the spirit of making dance music dance music, they deliver fire. Administering our necessary dose of disco and funk, the duo gives the world a different, but beautiful side of electronic music. In a world addicted to the next drop, it's fun to hear some solid, funky music you can two-step with that sexy human you like spending time with.

Gotta Start Somewhere

For a while, I wasn’t sure how I was going to document the journey from bedroom DJ to the clubs. But why become a DJ? Where It Started I’ll never forget sitting in the car with my dad while he blasted jazz and funk on the radio. Rolling around his 1987 Nissan Pulsar. Man, he loved that car. He would mouth-drum along with the track and tell me who the artists were; his experiences. There I was, a little kid humming George Clinton to myself at school.

Music has always been at the core of my world. How I understood it. How I related to those around me. It gave me a space to feel and contextualize my experiences from funk on vinyl, to angsty pop punk on an ipod classic.

I posted this on instagram -- In summary, I heard my dad singing to Digital Love and something about that moment sparked something within me. I wanted to make whatever I was hearing. I wanted to do whatever they were doing. The world of DJ and production opened up. Dad bought my a midi DJ controller, but I had no idea what I was doing. I didn’t have any guidance and ended up putting it away.

But What Did I Want? Fast forward over a decade later, and I had to ask myself what I really wanted. That’s when I realized, I’d love to DJ and produce. I don’t need to be famous. I don’t need to be big. I just want to create, explore, and play. So, that’s what this is all about. I want the opportunity to deliver someone that moment the same way it was delivered to me because it honestly changed my life. I enjoy my day job, but I love doing this, too. And I don’t see why I can’t do both for the time being.

So Now What? I will begin to document my journey from the crib to the bars, and who knows, maybe to some clubs. I won’t pretend to be an expert because I’m not. I’ve DJed at some small gallery openings, and some events at Fashion Week, but nothing major. I even used to host a radio show with a friend.
