mr driller findings part 2
the following is taizo and masuyo's interviews from the older version of the official mr driller site (horisusumu.com). they're seemingly the only two characters whose interviews are still accessible. i've been getting tired of checking them by having to retranslate them over and over so i though i'd put them somewhere where other people can see them as well!
since i have the actual text for these, i'll be pasting the machine translations (shoutout to my friend mono for doublechecking some sections!! thank you again!!):
TAIZO'S INTERVIEW Hello, this is Suzuki Hiroshi. I'd like to introduce Hori Taizo, Susumu's father, honorary chairman of the Driller Council, and a world hero.
mr driller findings part 1
so a few days ago i mentioned that i was looking at japanese sources for mr driller lore stuff and due to me not knowing the language and not wanting to make my friend translate a billion sentences, i put some of what i found through machine translation since it's the best i got (well technically my friend is the best i got, but like i said, really don't wanna put him through having to hand translate ALL of what i found)
wanna start off with this, this is from NOURS magazine and shows anna's house and the entirety of the driller labo which is SO cool. i adore the environmental art here and the little character and world lore tidbits, it really adds a lot
god i love the tidbit that taizo drilling into the walls happens on a regular basis
under the read more is stuff about undergrounders and a translated comic!
I was asked by a friend yesterday if I could offer basic tips about comic paneling. As it turns out, I have a lot to say on the matter! I tried breaking down the art of paneling using the principles of art and design, and I hope it helps you out!
EDIT: uh uh there are a lot of people reblogging this, so i figure i may as well append this now while i can lol
This whole thing was very much cranked out in a few hours so I had a visual to talk about with a friend! If this gives you a base understanding of paneling, that's awesome! Continue to pull in studies from the comics you see and what other artists do well and don't do well! You can tell paneling is doing well when the action is flowing around in its intended reading format.
Here's the link to the globalcomix article from which I pulled the images about panel staggering! Someone sent in a reblog that it wasn't totally clear that the 7th slide mostly covers what NOT to do in regards to staggering, and that is my mistake!
I saw in a tag that someone was surprised I used MamaYuyu too, and I don't blame them lol. If I had given myself more than a couple hours maybe I would have added something else on, I just really admire MamaYuyu's paneling personally.
uh uh, final append: I am by no means a renowned master of paneling, so if you find anything off base here, by all means, counter it with your own knowledge and ways you can build upon from here! Art is always a sum knowledge of everything we find. 💪
btw. i made this quick guide of some of the natural size and proportion reference points in the human body. of course this all varies even irl, and you can stylize however you want, so ymmv but thought it might be helpful for some folks.
like i said all of these vary, but adding on to clarify that that's especially true for hand + foot size, and thumb length. hands + feet are quite frequently smaller than stated here, and the thumb tends to vary from hitting abt the middle of the first finger bone to reaching the end of it. i made the graphic while half asleep so not as nuanced as it could've been lmao
THE ORIGIN OF THIS IMAGE:
So in my etsy I sell a pin of some isopods having at a bag of doritos based on this photo. Today I was contacted by the person who took it.
I asked to share this info and he gave permission!
Here’s the picture of him working with isopods and here’s a link to their published research!

Pink Rose looking very demure in her pail pink knighty. Like her friend Demi-mure Moore, she is an actress of great re-noun, having appeared in American Beauty, Citizen Kane, The Sound of Music, The War of the Roses, Beauty and Beast, The Great Gatsby, The Name of the Rose, The Rose Rings Twice, The RoseFather, Gone with the Rose, The Wizard of Rose, The Silence of the Roses, The Lord of the Rose among others.
Why do you do this to me
There’s a reason behind color zones, but James Gurney does a much better job at explaining it than I do. Keep in mind this doesn’t cover lighting, just the local color of skin.
Although there are ‘color palettes’ here, I really wouldn’t recommend using them for your own (as in saving the image and eye dropping them) art, I did this rather quickly so this probably not very accurate. These are just my personal preferences when it comes to color. I don’t have saved palettes; I pick colors depending on the lighting or mood as I am working on a painting. BUT IF YOU WANT TO GO RIGHT AHEAD.
As for texture, lolidunno, I just use a lot of scatter brushes until it sort of looks like skin texture??? I honestly don’t worry about texture though unless it’s like a really close up view of a face or whatever. You can find my brushes here (you’ll need Photoshop CS or higher).
I am flattered that people are seeking advice from me, but keep in mind that I am still learning myself, so I am by no means the best person to be asking. Hope this helps you out though, anon!
bless u

Pigeon attempts to court falcon
For all those in the notes - peregrine falcons hunt by dive-bombing their prey; this falcon however is currently stationary and cannot dive-bomb much of anything. In this moment, the pigeon is safe. The falcon however may not recover from the embarrassment.
I can't tell if that's a giant pigeon or a tiny falcon
Tiny falcon
this struck me
This reminds me of the dancing crab and octopus post. I love it.
was thinking of that while drawing as well HAHA
