Tips for new Evangelion watchers
Neon Genesis Evangelion hits Netflix tomorrow, so here are a few things to keep in mind if you’re watching the series for the first time!
Try not to binge it. It’s a very draining show. If an episode takes a lot out of you or speaks to you in a specific way, take a break to process what you saw and return to watching when you’re rejuvenated.
Don’t expect a lot of action. Netflix marketed the series as if it were an action mecha anime, but the show is about 40% fights and 60% still shots of characters musing to themselves.
If you watch the series subbed, make sure to read the subtitles—as previously stated, NGE is dialogue-based and it’s very important to understand what the characters say and think.
If you watch the series dubbed, know that it is not the original dub from the 90s. The original dub is flawed, but it has merit! If you’re interested in comparing the two, you can find compilations online or buy the original DVD release for an absurd amount of money.
Characters are purposefully problematic and purposefully flawed. They’re human. Keep that in mind when watching.
If you’re confused about why the last 2 episodes are the way they are, follow the show by watching The End of Evangelion. It ties up some loose ends and gives the series a more definitive conclusion.
If you’re confused about what the show means, do some research! This video from wisecrack does a great job at breaking down the show’s philosophy and use of allegory. There are also countless other videos, articles, and thinkpieces about what the show means that can clear things up.
While doing your research, make sure to read about the original NGE and not the rebuild movies. Those films play out very differently and it will be very confusing to read about a completely different ending than what you just watched.
