It's that time of the month again. You're lying on the couch, pain coming from your lower abdomen, a hollow feeling in your stomach that you know is not hunger, but rather cravings. You've been craving something sweet since you got home from work but you are determined not to give in because Eddie, your boyfriend, promised you you'd have dinner together. You glance at your phone and notice that it's already late and Eddie is still nowhere to be seen. Just thinking about losing the opportunity to eat together makes your eyes fill with tears, probably due to the vulnerable moment you're in right now, but also because it's been a while since you two had dinner together, considering that you come home in the evening from work, just in time to see Eddie leave to start his shift that, usually, ends when you have already eaten. Today he told you he'd be home earlier than usual because he found someone who could cover his shift.
Not having any sign of him coming home for dinner, you give in to the cravings. You stand up from the couch and walk to the kitchen. You search for something sweet that could make the hollow feeling go away and fortunately you find a tub of ice cream in the freezer. You take it and, for a moment, you hesitate before fully giving in and eating the ice cream directly from the tub with a spoon. At first you don't even notice the tears rolling down your cheeks, too caught up in your thoughts. You couldn't believe your sweet and caring boyfriend broke a promise like that. No texts, no calls, no nothing.
You were close to finishing the tub of ice cream when the front door opened. "I'm so sorry sweetheart, I know I'm late but let me explain-... Hey"
You felt your cheeks heat up with embarrassment as if you were caught doing something wrong. "Hey..." You reply, wiping your cheeks with your free hand, while tossing the spoon into the sink, then shoving the ice cream, or at least what remains of it, into the freezer. You glance at him, now looking at you skeptically, like he was trying to solve a puzzle. Only then you notice him holding groceries. "Everything ok?" He asks, genuinely worried by your behaviour. Your gaze met his for a moment as you think if it's better to be honest or lie about it.
You don't have time to think of what to say, as he already put the groceries down and is now wrapping his arms around you. "You know you can talk to me, right?"
The way he was looking at you, like he actually cared, made you break. You hug him back and cry with your face pressed against his chest. "Hey, it's ok. I'm right here."
You take a deep breath and let his words calm you down, accompanied by his hand caressing your hair.
"Why didn't you text me?" You lean back and look up at him. "I was worried, I thought you weren't coming"
"I know, I'm sorry. I was picking up some food to eat together. I'm sorry, I should've called you." He reassured you, wiping the remaining tears from your cheeks. "Now let me make you dinner and apologize properly with the best meal you've ever eaten... If you're still hungry of course." You blush again at the reminder, feeling stupid for doubting him and eating ice cream this late. "Oh no- I mean, yeah, I can still eat..." He chuckled at your reaction. "Sweetheart, it's fine, no need to be embarrassed with me, ok? You can eat whatever you want".
You smile at him, feeling lighter now that he was home.
