At first when I realized Carmilla was hitting the mainstream, I was so psyched because I thought it would usher in the dawn of high-quality sapphic period dramas. I’ve never been so disappointed as when I realized Carmilla’s popularity is largely just a symptom of the 2020’s gothic craze. Think Nosferatu, Sinners, Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein, and “Wuthering Heights”. It’s not the queerness of Carmilla that’s interesting to the Thought Daughters of the internet. It’s just the vampires :(

I think the same thing is happening with Heated Rivalry. People are into the hockey romance trope now, so it’s not gay men having a moment, it’s just the fashionable genre. I’m afraid we’re not getting a sustainable flow of representation.

(Obviously, there are exceptions, but this pattern keeps bugging me. What do you mean studios don’t make sapphic period dramas because they aren’t profitable? Maybe they aren’t making profit because the two or three that exist happen to be bad??? Because they contain one page of dialogue max and the leads end up dead or separated??? Maybe because the set design is gray and ugly and the leads’ only personality trait is sad??? Duuuude, will I ever live to read or watch something I relate to 😭)

I feel this so much.

I will forever thank the universe for introducing me to Carmilla through a web series back in 2014. Yeah I tell so many people about the book but I will forever rave over the web series due to them not just idealizing the vampire aspect but being a voice for the lgbtq community and giving everyone representations. Yeah i adore Carmilla and Laura BUT nothing on earth made me feel more validated at 14 than when I saw La Fontaine come on screen and go through the they/them process during season 1.

Like I felt so much hope when I saw Perry accept them and actually continue being their closest friend instead of just leaving.

The web series is an under-appreciated gem. Queerness was central to the world of that story. I mean, what other show features a token stereotypical straight man for comic relief? It was so subversive and fun, and I wish we had more media like it.

Lena Luthor and Kara Danvers are my roman empire.

They did such a Lois Lane treatment on Lena. A highly intelligent woman, so clever, who doesn't connect the dots but by all means should, especially as close as Kara and Lena (and Supergirl and Lena!) are.

Every single thing about them is love-interest-coded and their chemistry is off the charts from day one. The push and pull, their body language, their dynamic. The way neither wanted to hurt the other and ended up making all of the wrong decisions for the right reasons because of it. The way Kara goes to bat for Lena every single time no matter what. The way Kara offers herself up in Lena's place so quickly even when she's just found out that Lena has kryptonite. The way Lena is so hurt by Kara keeping such a huge secret and the way it hurts Kara to keep it.

They keep throwing men at both Kara and Lena who only have half the chemistry and it just feels forced every single time. I refuse to believe that it's just because I'm a lesbian and therefore probably biased.

James and Lena? Bad.

Mon-El and Kara? Horrible.

The best thing they could've done, the thing to give the show the most closure, the most satisfying ending, would have been to have Lena and Kara get together in the finale.

these cats are displaying remarkable theory of mind skills by not only registering that the humans can perceive them but actively trying to manipulate that perception! that requires one to be aware that other individuals have complicated interior thoughts of their own, to know that those thoughts are not always based on truth, and to quickly decide on the best possible “lie” for the situation. this is why I despise animal intelligence tasks based on obedience— some of the most clever moments stem from intelligent disobedience.

Kara, who had been struggling to balance her Supergirl alt ego with Kara Danvers for the entire first season of the show, and then Lena freakin Luthor shows up and says “Supergirl may have saved me but Kara Danvers, YOU are my hero” and honestly I bet she didn’t hear anything for the next five minutes except the blood rushing in her own ears
