People on the internet: “🤪 Actually, you can be a lesbian who’s sometimes attracted to men 🤪” - That is contrary to the definition of lesbian. Kick your internalized biphobia out the door and stop using my label like a temporary tattoo. I hate to get so riled about this, but seeing some of my queer sisters not come to grasp that words have meaning™️ and communicate ideas™️ is sowing so much distrust of community icons and even everyday people. Jojo Siwa and the Queer Collective, I’m looking at you.
(Because this might come up, trans women ARE women. This isn’t a bioessentialism post condemning lesbians for liking butches, mascs, trans women, and other women that terfs don’t see as worthy of woman status. This is a post about how some women are swooning over cisgender male celebrities and characters left and right, but because they get the ick from men’s behavior, they wouldn’t date them. It’s ok to like a gender in theory but not in practice, but please don’t knowingly appropriate a label whose definition doesn’t fit you. It’s more hurtful than you know. Everyone seems to assume I have at least one crush on a man or something, but that’s not how it works. Being a lesbian isn’t flexible. Only dating women isn’t a boundary I set for myself because I find it practical or emotionally fulfilling; it’s a fixed orientation set by nature. It genuinely does scare me that so many people have the “well everyone’s a little bi” mindset. If you’re sapphic and also into men, I promise you that being a lesbian is no more special than being bi. It’s ok to be bi, and bi people need more bi pride events to celebrate. I support all queer people and wish everybody love and fulfillment, but right now I feel pretty trampled on because of the ways people regularly bend and misuse a label that theoretically should work so well for me.)
