Place to Hide - Akechi Goro
988 words
Genre: Hurt/Comfort
A/N: I think I am physically incapable of writing straight up angst I always have to throw fluff in there.
Akechi had really messed up. He had come home exhausted and frustrated after a day where nothing seemed to go right. First, he missed his train, then the only lead on a particularly difficult case was lost, and to top it all off an intern at the office had spilled coffee all over him. Which he of course had to excuse to a fake smile and wave of a hand.
He only wanted to shower, order takeout, and just relax by himself. He arrived at his apartment only to his s/o standing outside. Oh of course today, the day where everything was horrible, was also the day they had made plans for the jazz club. The last thing he wanted to do was have another person to keep up his fake persona around.
“Hey, bad day?” they said, offering a kind smile.
“Yes,” he confirmed. “I’m sorry but, do you mind canceling plans for tonight?”
“Of course not,” they said, waving their hand. “Do you want me to cook some dinner for you?”
“That would be nice,” he agreed, forcing a smile.
The elevator ride was spent in silence and after unlocking his apartment Akechi had rushed to go to the bathroom. He was desperate for a minute all by himself. After a brief shower and changing into more comfortable clothes he saw his s/o sitting at the kitchen island scrolling on their phone.
“Oh you’re out,” they noticed, putting their phone down. “So I took a little peek in the fridge and you really don’t have anything so what do you want for dinner? I’m heading to the supermarket to restock your fridge and pantry because you are destroying your body with all that instant ramen and those Red Bulls I saw in the trash.”
With each word of their rambling, he felt himself grow more frustrated. All their kind words and pretty smiles they were all so genuine. They weren’t like the ones that came with his fake personality. All his s/o’s kindness was so real. Why could they be the person that everyone wanted and he couldn’t no matter what? Before he knew it he suddenly slammed down his fist on the kitchen isle startling his s/o.
“Can an insufferable piece of shit like you just shut your goddamn mouth!?” he hissed, words filled with venom.
The couple just stared at each other with wide eyes for what felt like hours to the brunette. He had screwed up majorly. The only person in his life who had ever shown genuine kindness and just wanted him or him was going to leave too. All because he couldn’t keep his useless mouth under control.
“I-I-I,” he scrambled for something to say before just running off back to his room. He slammed the door shut and locked it while trying to calm his frantic breathing before he escalated into a panic attack. He managed to slightly control his breathing but then he heard it. The sound of a door opening and closing.
They were leaving him.
That’s how he now sat in his current spot against the door curled up into a ball with tears streaming down his face and gasping for air as he sobbed. The only thing anyone ever wanted was his charming prince detective persona. His true self was something no one would ever want around. Not even his sorry excuse of parents.
After what felt like forever he managed to calm himself down. His breathing was steady and he was contemplating heading over to the bathroom to wash his tear-stained face, but then heard it again. The sound of keys jingling and a door opening. He could hear shuffling around like the person was carrying something. The only person who had a key to his apartment was his s/o, but they left, right?
He took him a little bit of effort to stand up after sitting on the floor for who knows how long but when he arrived in the kitchen the sight made him nearly start crying again.
There was his s/o casually humming along to jazz music playing on their phone as they unloaded the haul of groceries they had bought for him.
“Oh, hey Goro,” they said, wearing an easygoing smile. “I bought a bunch of groceries and also picked up food from your favorite place on the way. Dinner just feels like kind of a hassle to make right now. Oh and there’s some coffee I got from Leblanc, you mentioned liking the place so I stopped by there as well.”
He just stared for a solid moment trying to figure out what was happening. He had snapped at them, yelled, and insulted them yet they still did all this for him. Even taking the train to another city to buy coffee from his favorite place he had only mentioned once at most.
“Why?” Akechi managed voice barely a whisper.
“Cause I love you,” they said like it was the simplest thing in the world. “And for the record please don’t be afraid to show me more of your true self. I promise I’m not going anywhere no matter what.”
There, for the second time that day, he broke down crying. Someone who loved him and didn’t care if he wasn’t the prince charming he made himself out to be. A part of him wondered if this was some dream and he was still sitting on his bedroom floor after his s/o left.
With another one of their warm smiles, they brought him close into a hug wrapping their arms around him tightly.
“When you’re with me don’t be afraid of saying anything wrong,” they said, running their hands through his hair. “It’ll be like your place to hide, okay?”
After a minute or so of Akechi trying to compose himself, he finally responded.
“Your kindness is truly insufferable.”
“That’s the spirit.”

One of the side convos you can hear in the station early in the game is someone saying that it’s “not normal” to suddenly not remember what you did, in reference to the conductor of the train accident. We know he had a psychotic breakdown berserk state inflicted on him by Goro, and that a loss of memory is the side effect of those after the breakdown wears off.
You know who also had a lapse in memory after the berserk state wore off? Goro. He tells you in the third semester that he has no memory of what happened between Shido’s Palace and seeing Akiren again (on Christmas Eve), which leads him to doubt his own existence. But it’s already established in canon that a loss of memory is a common, if not the major, side effect of someone recovering from the berserk state.
So.
There you go.
