Just watched Adam Conover (of Adam Ruins Everything) make such a solid point that I think we should spread far and wide. Yes, having AI write your emails is lazy, sure, but people love being lazy. We need to really emphasize that sending AI emails (or using AI responses on social media, or publishing AI flyers, or or or) is rude.
It's rude. You're making someone take their time to read something you couldn't bother to write. You're telling them they were so unimportant you couldn't be bothered to actually take the time to say something yourself. And frankly, you're lying about it while you're at it.
After reading the TVTropes article about TNA wrestler Abyss and seeing what it said about his similarity to Kane (being a wrestling monster, having a messed up backstory in kayfabe, mystical/supernatural moments, etc), I have a writing prompt for a professional wrestling fanfic with kayfabe details only: Kane and Abyss meet up at some point after retiring, bond over their similarities and screwed up families, and become friends. They also get therapy because goodness knows they both need it.
I started watching Lucha Underground last week because I wanted to watch a non-WWE wrestling TV show. It helps that Lucha Underground is part drama series, part wrestling series, which I think is neat. I hope I can finish all 4 seasons ASAP because if the rumors about it returning are true, I want to be completely caught up.
Not this weekend, but next weekend, I will visit my older sister, brother-in-law, and nephew from Friday night until Sunday morning. It will be nice to get away from it all for a little while.
The vacation I had gone on for New Years was great, and I got home during the first Sunday in Januaray. I just wasn't happy that where I live got a big winter storm last weekend and colder than usual temperatures throughout this week. On the positive side, I am staying warm.
Summary: Sequel to Advice as a Birthday Gift. One week after making his televised debut on Smackdown, Lucas Calaway declares that he can take on anyone on the roster due to having defeated a local wrestler. His uncle, the Undertaker, isn't happy to hear that kind of bragging and comes out to the ring to address him. Later, Kane also gives him some reassurance and advice. Kayfabe details used only.
Disclaimer: I don't own the professional wrestling characters/gimmicks used here. I only own my original characters.
The lights in the arena went off. Then a familiar gong rang, and the sounds of Chopin's "Funeral March" music started playing as Michael Cole said on commentary. "Be careful what you wish for, Lucas!"
It was January 16th, 2007, one week after the brunette, brown-eyed, 21-year-old Lucas Calaway had made his televised debut on Smackdown after starting to work for WWE just as his adoptive father Kane and adoptive uncle the Undertaker did. He knew this episode would air 3 days later and had spent part of today seeing the sites around Little Rock, Arkansas. Now, though, he was in the Alltel Arena as the show was starting. He was not scheduled to have a match this week, but he was going to share his thoughts about his previous victory last week. So he did as he stood there in a pair of dark blue shorts, a light blue t-shirt, and black wrestling boots. "I hope you all are feeling great tonight because I am feeling like that after last week! Some think I don't have a good reason for doing this: a certain Superstar turned commentator plus his old tag team partner and later on two half siblings who were Paul Heyman guys traumatized me with the kidnapping of my mother and my own kidnapping, respectively, and I couldn't do anything about either one since others had to help. Now, I can do something about other things and other Superstars I may have issues with as well! I have proven that I can compete in this ring, and someday, I will chase a championship! In fact, I can take on any man on the SmackDown roster!"
"Family drama seems to be just around the corner now, Michael!" JBL added.
The Undertaker emerged from the back and slowly walked to the ring as his music continued. He knew that his nephew by adoption was starting to seriously reconsider his words now. It wasn't the first time that someone had bragged about being able to take on anyone on the roster, and it certainly wouldn't be the last. The Deadman got onto one corner of the ring apron and raised his hands to turn the lights back on. He had a microphone in hand thanks to a crew member a moment after getting all the way into the ring as he turned to address Lucas. "Lucas Andrew Calaway, I am disappointed in you for letting your ego grow bigger than it should be at this point."
Lucas was scared but also embarrassed as he finally replied a second later. "You sound like my mom, Uncle Undertaker." He couldn't think of anything to say besides that. Several people in the audience started laughing.
The Undertaker kept a straight face as he said, "That is because I know she taught you better than to say anything carelessly. It is true that you have had great success in OVW and that you are capable of a lot of things, but the common sense that doesn't seem to be as common as it should be is also necessary to survive in this business." He paused briefly before continuing. "Many say that actions speak louder than words. I challenge you to a match for next week, and perhaps then we can see if you can live up to your claim of taking on any man."
JBL noticed that Lucas was looking intimidated by the possibility and asked "Are you scared, Lucas?"
"I am not scared, JBL!" Lucas shouted as he started to head to the commentary table to beat him up. He wouldn't get very far, though.
The Deadman grabbed his nephew and pulled him away from the edge of the ring. "We both know I am not going to buy that, boy! Attacking the commentary team isn't the best way to avoid this conversation, either. So, before you decide whether you want to accept my challenge or not, let me ask you this: Are you afraid to face me in this ring because we are family? Or do you fear losing and embarrassing yourself like so many others who needed their egos deflated?"
"That is a very good question." Michael Cole said to the audience at home thoughtfully.
Lucas stood there silently, unable to answer for about 30 seconds as he thought about it. Then he finally had an answer. "It's actually both. I also just thought of when I met you almost 11 years ago as a 10-year-old boy when you came over to my family's home to catch up with my mom and rekindle your friendship with her. You told me and my siblings that everyone is afraid of something, but it's up to them what they decide to do about it. So, I am going to accept your challenge and face my fear."
The Undertaker seemed like he was trying not to smile as he let go of his nephew. "Then it seems you are capable of remembering what you were taught as a child. I remember that conversation just as well as you do. You have certainly inherited your mother's capacity for courage, but you should also know this. I am not going to go easy on you just because we are family, nephew of mine, as your adopted father already knows. If you fail to keep focused on our match next week or interfere with the one I am having tonight, you will rest. In. Peace." He left the ring as the gong and then his music was heard once again.
Lucas was wondering just how he was going to handle that type of match if it was made official as he headed backstage at the start of the commercial break. He was followed by a cameraman but didn't seem to mind. He had quickly gotten used to that happening. Now, he was sitting in the empty locker room and combing his hair before burying his head in his hands out of shame as he struggled not to shed tears. "How could I have been such an idiot to claim that I can take on any man here? You'd think I would have known better considering I was a fan before training to be in this business."
Kane approached his adoptive son and sat down next to him. "It seems that some lessons have to be learned from experience for you, son, as is often the case with many in this business." He uncharacteristically put his right arm on the younger man's shoulder.
Lucas sat up straight. "Now I understand why my uncle terrifies so many people." He finally admitted. "It's true that he won't go easy on me, isn't it?"
"That is indeed true, but I am not going to be upset if you lose. You didn't back down when you were challenged, and I am proud of you for that. As long as you give that match your best effort, you will be given the respect you desire from everyone here." Kane assured him. "I am not going to interfere in that potential match at all, and I don't want you interfering with my match tonight. Is that clear?"
"Yes, Dad." Lucas replied calmly, the words from the Big Red Machine sinking in.
"Excellent. I have to finish getting ready; remind your uncle that I am driving all 3 of us back to the hotel tonight." Kane said as he and his adoptive son got up. The latter left to go get a snack from catering.
The Undertaker appeared a second later to stare at the Big Red Machine. "I don't need that reminder, little brother."
"And I don't need your comments on my advice to Lucas!" Kane growled, briefly staring back at him before going to take a fast shower.
"Let us hope he remembers that advice by the time next week arrives." The Deadman said in response before the cameraman left.
Later that night, Lucas wouldn't have a peaceful sleep, but nonetheless, he was glad that he was sharing a hotel room with Kane and not in a room by himself. It made him feel safer. He also hoped that tomorrow's house show would go smoothly.
