Anthea lets herself in on the night before the wedding - John doesn’t even protest it anymore - and Sherlock frowns at her. He hasn’t seen her since Mycroft’s funeral. Sherlock had imagined her to be long gone by now, being swept away by some high official or some government employee, but she’s here, a disc in hand and with the message to watch it tonight.
She leaves before John can offer her tea.
Sherlock plays with the disc in his hands for a moment, before moving to the laptop on the table and inserting it. John finds himself moving closer in curiosity before the content - a video by the looks of it - starts playing. And it is a good thing he does.
Sherlock’s gasp spurs John into action, gripping Sherlock hand in his own, offering his silent support. To remind Sherlock that he does not have to face this alone. Of course it would be now, the night before the wedding, when Mycroft bloody Holmes, with his farsightedness, had anticipated this happening and had acted accordingly.
Mycroft’s voice is soft, less harsh around the edges, and there is a faint smile playing on his lips. He looks… proud, John notes. More human than John has ever seen him. Sherlock is unable to look away.
‘’If you’re watching this, then…’’ Mycroft clear his throat and his smile falters a bit. It takes him a moment before he recovers and returns his gaze back to the camera. ‘’Let’s not waste anymore time with stating the obvious, shall we? But I do want to offer you my congratulations, Sherlock. I do not know if you and Dr. Watson have announced it yet, or have even realised how much you love one another, but, as I said, you watching this recording is a clear indication that you and your doctor are getting married and I, to my regret, can not attend.’’
‘’I would have been there with you, Sherlock. I might have even been convinced to play the piano for you for your first dance as a husband. A husband. My little brother. I could not have been more proud, Sherlock.’’
“I always knew you’d do me proud. Since the day you were born I’ve been proud of you and I’m sorry I did not tell you or show you often enough. I know our relationship has been strained since Ford, but I do love you. And I’m so proud of the man you’ve become.’’
‘’I vowed to keep you safe and you are. You have your own doctor now. Your very own soldier to protect you and love you as much as you deserve. You could not have chosen a better man to marry.’’
‘’And to doctor Watson,’’ Mycroft turns slightly now and his eyes meet John, as if he knew. John swallows. ‘’I’m glad you stood up to me when we met. I’m glad you did not run away because my little brother would have missed the best man for him. You saved him in so many ways. And I would have been honoured to call my brother.’’
Sherlock draws in a ragged breath - God, he is crying - and John tightens his hold on him.
‘’One last order, captain: love him. Always love him with all you have because Sherlock deserves no less. And let him love you.”
Mycroft takes a deep breath. ‘’It’s alright, Sherlock. Get married. Smile. Dance. Play. The tears are for today. Tomorrow is for your laughter. Good night, little William.’’
The screen turns black after a nod to both of them.
