Theory: What if Home isn't actually evil?

(Just a fan interpretation.)

If my previous theory about Ronald creating Welcome Home as a safe, structured world is anywhere close to the actual story, then I don't think Home is actually evil.

What if Home's purpose is to preserve the neighborhood exactly as Ronald Dorelaine created it: a safe, predictable place where everyone follows their role and nothing is ever "wrong"?

If that's the case, it would make sense that the black substance is coming from Home. Maybe it's not because Home is causing the decay at all. Maybe it's because Home is what's holding everything together after Ronald's disappearance, or because the neighborhood is simply getting older and beginning to break down.

That also makes Wally's behavior more interesting. If Home exists to preserve the rules, then Wally reaching out to the outside world would be breaking those rules. Maybe Home isn't trying to hurt him. Maybe it's just trying to keep the world functioning the only way it knows how.

clown appreciation

he's probably never gonna see this, who knows, but clown is such an absolute inspiration for me, I love how they design characters and storylines, and how they can make little details and fun facts that bring his characters to life

I strive to be like that with all my little OCs running around in my brain. with them each having their own special thing that they do, with their own relationships with everyone else. and just overall a well made storyline and lore

I'm fairly new to the welcome home fandom but welcome home still one of the most amazing projects and ideas I've ever seen

Welcome Home Characters as Coffees

I love coffee, and my local coffee shop always has the best drinks on special. Here are some of them that I felt fit the Welcome Home cast!

Wally - Apple Pie Latte

Crisp apple syrup with a little cinnamon on top makes this latte just "the most!"

Barnaby - Eggnog Latte

I don't know if it's better than Mama Beagle's Barnyard Eggnog, but I'd like to think our favorite jokester would have a soft spot for this holiday latte!

Julie - Cherry Blossom Latte

Springtime in a cup! Sweet and bright, plus it's a lovely shade of pink that matches Julie well!

Frank - Honey Bee Latte

Did I partially choose this because of the "bee" in the name? Of course! But also, it feels very Frank, sweetness with just a titch of saltiness.

Poppy - Cinnamon Roll Latte

Literally a baked good in liquid form, it's so good! It also tastes very much like Autumn, a season that I heavily associate with Poppy.

Howdy - Strawberries & Cream Cold Brew

A strong coffee plus a good helping of strawberry for a very busy caterpillar! I could see him making this in addition to his strawberry sodas.

Sally - Dark Chocolate Mocha with edible glitter

This was actually served for the 2024 eclipse at my local coffee shop, though I've always considered dark chocolate to be rather dramatic. Plus, with the gold glitter on top? Perfect for Sally!

Eddie - Raspberry Shortbread Latte

One of my absolute favorite drinks, served during February for Valentine's Day. It's a sweet and pleasant little latte, the kind that'd make you smile no matter how you were feeling before.

Home - Hazelnut Latte

This is a little more personal, but I've always associated hazelnut coffee with my own home. It's a gentle and inviting flavor, one that makes you feel nostalgic for a place from long ago, which, honestly, is how Welcome Home in general makes me feel <3

What if Wally likes eye contact because it makes him feel important?

Like, no one's paid attention to him or the show in so long, he's just happy having your attention for once. Imagine being alone since 1974 and someone finally looks your way, you'd never wanna look away from their eyes! I'd imagine that's how Wally feels, he finally feels important enough to be noticed.

Basically, Wally has abandonment issues and like looking at you because you're finally looking back at him.

Theory: Was Ronald Dorelaine Autistic?

(Just a fan interpretation, not a claim about Clown or canon.)

Clown has confirmed that Wally, Frank, and Julie are autistic, each presenting differently. Frank is fascinated by observing bugs and likes things to be just so. Julie has an over-the-top personality and expects everyone playing her games to follow the rules exactly. There are also neurodivergent themes throughout Welcome Home (e.g. Poppy showing severe anxiety and agoraphobia.)

There are already several theories that Wally is Ronald Dorelaine, or proxy. Wally's curiosity about everyday things like eating, sleeping, and other ordinary behaviors has always reminded me of a neurodivergent person trying to understand and adapt to a world that wasn't built for the way they naturally think.

Here's my interpretation: what if Ronald Dorelaine himself was written as an autistic creator? Not because we're meant to diagnose him, but because it would fit the story's recurring themes. Maybe Ronald created Welcome Home as a safe haven, where everyone follows familiar scripts, sticks to their role, and nothing is ever "wrong."

If Wally truly reflects Ronald in some way, then his imprisonment inside Home becomes more than just horror. It becomes the story of an autistic creator who built a safe place, only to become trapped inside it, forever looking out at us through the screen, unable to leave the world he created.

Whether or not that's what Clown intended, I think it's an interesting lens through which to read the story.
