[I made myself sad today… I was just thinking of the UNIT family when they retire and we see that the Brigadier never truly retires, and even though he may no longer be exactly an official member of UNIT anymore, that he still involves himself in it constantly, often acting undercover or doing things on their behalf. Jo goes on to try and save rain forests and the like with Cliff and ends up having a fuckton of children. Sarah Jane on a similar note ends up doing the Sarah Jane Adventures, takes care of some kids and saves the world in a different way from Jo. I also imagine that Liz just goes back to Cambridge and continues to be a scientifically proven badass. But we never see what Benton and Yates do in their retirements though the Brigadier does say that Benton starts selling used cars. But really, I can very easily see Benton settling down, getting married, having some kids, and just generally being happy.

So other than hanging out at the monastery, we have no idea what Yates does in his retirement. But from Hornets’ Nest, I don’t really get the impression that he has anyone important in his life, especially not a spouse nor children (he was willing to pretty much just leave everything behind on a whim, and, just as always, willing to risk his life for the Doctor at any moment. If he had anything significant to get back to at home, he probably wouldn’t act like this). I also get the very strong impression that even though he’s been leading a different life, that he never moved on from being a soldier, and that he never truly forgave himself for everything with the Golden Age. And you know… It’s just sad that it looks like everyone else in UNIT ended up having something of a happy ending. They all ended up more or less where they wanted to be and where they felt they could make a difference, except for Yates. Only Yates didn’t get to have that happy ending.]
