just saw a post about buneary's famously low friendship level and was suddenly reminded about my lopunny Jericho who I glitched into evolving by hating me so much

We all know that Buneary is the only wild caught Pokemon besides the legendaries that starts its Friendship level (a hidden number attached to every Pokemon) at an overwhelming 0 out of 255. In gen 4, most other wild Pokemon start at 70.

This makes evolving Buneary a long process, since Lopunny is a high-friendship based evolution, and you'll be starting at a disadvantage.

In Pokemon Diamond and Pearl specifically (not Platinum. i misremembered which version i did this on because i was playing multiple copies all at the same time. long, separate, story), there's a glitch that can just immediately set Buneary's friendship to max instead.

Buy a bitter herb from Eterna City, and then go catch like a level 12 Buneary from Eterna Forest (very convenient and almost purposeful that they're right next to each other), and then get into a battle with your new Buneary.

Let Buneary take some damage, and then heal with the bitter herb.

Pokemon don't like the taste of bitter herbs, so they lower friendship.

Because Buneary's friendship level was already at 0 and there was no lower cap put in place in the code, the game tries to calculate a negative number for the friendship instead. Which can't happen. So instead, it underflows, and sets it to max instead.

Then at level 13, it will level up, evolve, and learn Return (which will be a base 100+ power Normal move, since its friendship is maxed).

Which can all be accomplished before the second gym.

And that's the story of how I beat Cynthia with my level 75 Lopunny, a level 45 Dialga, and a level 30 Grotle.

Me and my lovely baby boy Jericho who hates my fucking guts and beats the shit out of me whenever I try to brush or feed him.

you can also technically do this with any pokemon that requires friendship to evolve in diamond and pearl (like golbat or riolu).

but it will take quite a few more bitter herbs to force the friendship all the way down. especially since most baby pokemon evolve with friendship and pokemon hatched from eggs start with 120 friendship instead of their wild caught number.

Watching Star Wars was a mistake. For years I’ve derived so much pleasure from seeing discourse on my timeline that’s like “it’s actually a pretty good writing choice that Glimbo Knutts manipulated the imbledimbians in the force to make Darth Freeble his personal jedi froogler. Not to get emo on main but you ever think about how the troop sang about their dreams of finding “a girl worth fighting for”, and they think their girl worth fighting for is one of romance, but the song abruptly comes to a halt when they find a different girl worth fighting for.

A tiny girl that had been killed at the hands of the Huns. A child too weak, too small to have any chance of withstanding the murderous invaders. That is their girl worth fighting for.

It’s also worth noting that ‘A Girl Worth Fighting For’ is the last song in the movie. Up until here, it’s a fun movie, and the imminent invasion feels like it’s just there to keep the plot moving, and to provide a little bit of drama to spice things up. None of the soldier’s are quite taking this seriously yet; sure, Mulan wanted to save her father from the draft, and on some level she was aware that he would die if he went to war, but beyond that she’s interested in not being caught, and not shaming her family. Her motives are good, but they’re entirely self centered. All the other soldiers are more or less in the same boat - they want to get tougher, they want to impress girls, they want to be cool soldiers. Shang’s easily the most serious of the bunch at first, and even then it’s just because training bad soldiers will reflect poorly on him, and important people are paying attention.

The abrupt ending of ‘A Girl Worth Fighting For’ is the wake up call. The soldiers and the audience get slapped in the face with the realization of what’s really at stake here. China is being invaded. Villages are burning, civilians are dying, and this isn’t going to stop until the country is conquered or the invaders are defeated. This is not a fun musical, this is a major crisis.

Mulan is such a good movie for so many reasons, but the abrupt tone shift is such a major reason why. It’s an excellent commentary on the reality of war, and it being a kids movie just meant they had to make their point without showing any actual gore, which I’d honestly say makes it that much more poignant.

You know what would be awesome? A House of Mouse type show, but with Super Smash Bros😌 All the fighters/assist trophies gathered around at the tables, like they're off the clock so they can chill, talking, and hanging out whether they're heroes or villains

I feel like the problem with a lot of Disney's live action remakes (and arguably Wish) is they're trying to appeal to a crowd that no longer exists, namely the people who used to claim that the Disney Princesses were sexist.

All the interviews tend to include, "Well she's not chasing a MAN anymore" which...almost no one sees the princesses like that, anymore. Virtually NO ONE still believes the princesses are man-chasing sexist caricatures of women.

Cinderella is now hailed as an abuse victim who stayed strong long enough to get help to get out of her situation. Anyone who says she should have saved herself is basically regarded as a victim blamer. And it's very clear in the film she wasn't looking to marry the prince, she just wanted a night off. She was the only one who wasn't in line to meet him. She didn't find out she met the prince until he went looking for her!

Snow White is now hailed for her negotiation skills, ability to calm down after extreme stress (she had a moment of panic and had to cry for a bit, but who wouldn't after finding out The Queen hired someone to kill you?), and ability to take charge of a house of adult men. And again, she was an abuse victim, this time trying to escape ASSASSINATION ATTEMPTS. While she dreamed of her prince, it was secondary to her main goal of SURVIVAL. There are also entire video essays about how Snow White gave hope to people during The Great Depression.

Everyone acknowledges that Ariel wanted to be human BEFORE meeting Eric. We all know she was a nerd hyperfixating on humans, and also standing up to her prejudiced father.

We understand Sleeping Beauty wasn't the main character, the Three Good Fairies were, AND PHILLIP WOULD NEVER HAVE BEATEN MALEFICENT WITHOUT THEM! He literally depended on them! WOMEN SAVED THE DAY! But even then, is it really such a sin for a girl to fantasize about romance and fall for someone with corny pickup lines?

We all understand Jasmine just wanted someone to treat her LIKE A PERSON. She rejected every Prince before Aladdin because they treated her like a prize. So why did they need her to want to be Sultan? How did that make her more feminist when she already wanted to be treated like an equal and have a say in her future? Is it only empowering if you want a career in politics?

We admire that Belle, despite living in a judgemental village, was kind to everyone (even though she found the village life dull), and her story teaches girls that the guy everyone else loves isn't always a good guy. What's sexist about teaching girls about red flags? And she didn't start being nice to The Beast until he started treating her with respect and kindness.

Do I really NEED to defend Mulan or Tiana? I think they speak for themselves.

Rapunzel was yet another abuse victim who just needed a little help to get out of her bad situation. In this case, she also needed to learn that she was an abuse victim, and that what Mother Gothel did WASN'T normal, much like many victims of gaslighting.

And don't get me started on the non-princess animals.

Perdita had a healthy relationship with Pongo to the point she was open to express her pregnancy fears to him, and was ready to TEAR APART Cruella's goons for daring to touch her puppies as well as adopting the other puppies. Like, she was so ferocious the goons mistook her for a hyena! She's basically that "I AM THAT GIRL'S MOTHER!" scene from SpyXFamily if Yor were a dog. She and her husband were a TEAM.....but they made a Cruella live action to turn her into a girlboss?! The literal animal abuser!? THAT'S the woman you wanted to put on a pedestal when Perdita was RIGHT THERE!?

Duchess kept her kittens calm after they had been catnapped and was classy as heck. Nice to everyone regardless of social class during a time period where that was uncommon.

Lady stood up to Tramp when she believed he had abandoned her and didn't really care about her. She found out he was a heartbreaker and was like, "Nuh uh. No. You are not doing that to me! You put me through enough."

Miss Bianca from The Rescuers was IN CHARGE the whole movie, and was willing to risk life and limb to save an innocent child. THAT TINY MOUSE TOOK ON ALLIGATORS! And she picked Bernard to accompany her because he was the only one who wasn't ogling her. And then in the sequel SHE DID IT ALL AGAIN! I wish I were as brave as her.

Like, the public haven't accused these ladies of being sexist caricatures since 2014 (Actresses and actors don't count, they're out of touch like the rest of Hollywood) yet Disney is operating under the assumption that the public still thinks that way, hence all the "sHe'S nOt AfTeR a MaN iN ThIs VeRsIOn" talk.

The live action remakes are trying to attract an audience that doesn't really exist much, anymore, and back when it did exist, was comprised mainly of people who didn't actually watch the films. The Disney princesses are no longer seen as sexist, and feminine qualities are no longer seen as weak or undesirable.

I feel like the launch of Disney+ ironically helped kill the anti-princess buzzfeed-feminism of the 2010s, because it made it a lot easier to rewatch all those old movies on the regular. I know personally I wouldn’t have been able to watch any Disney movies except the ones we happened to have on dvd. Having a Disney+ subscription has made me hate current Disney more, while falling back in love with the classics. Also why would I pay to go to the movies when I have the actual film from my childhood at home. It’s literally the reverse of the “McDonalds at home” -meme.

You could probably make a similar case for the MCU. Its kinda been downhill since Endgame (it’s in the title you idiots, quit while you’re ahead), and both Endgame and Disney+ came out in 2019. So at the peak of it’s popularity, all the movies were made available in one place, just in time for the pandemic, and they couldn’t keep the momentum going. Once you had all the movies in one place, the new movies will suffer from the comparison.
