Seriously though, the way some people treat liking media as if it has an expiration date is so weird to me. And three years is still so recent in the grand scheme of things anyway, actually!

Why is nobody talking about the Deltarune / Mother 3 comparisons that can be made and their possible implications? Think about it. If Undertale was Toby's Earthbound, then Deltarune is his Mother 3.

Like. Missing sibling who may end up fighting for the bad guys / against their sibling. Characters who haunt the narrative.

And the one comparison I never see: The dark worlds being a parallel for the world of Mother 3. A world with so much to show us, so many wonderful and terrible things- a world which, like all story worlds, must eventually come to an end. I can hear all the non-Mother 3 fans going "HUH??" right now so let me explain.

Mother 3 ends with the destruction of the world it takes place in. The world is wiped clean for a fresh start, a better world, but that process takes everything- good and bad- from the world of Mother 3 with it. It's a heart-wrenching conclusion that inspired an advertising campaign with the slogan "no crying until the end" and ties together the overarching themes and story of Mother 3.

There's also the meta context. That the story is over, and no amount of remembrance or replaying will make it truly continue. When the story ends, so too does its world. You say one final goodbye and then the curtains close. Tomorrow that same stage may host an entirely new play and that one too must end. Everything ends. But doesn't the journey make it all the more worth it?

Going back to Deltarune, I feel like.... Let me frame it this way. What do all stories have in common? It's not the hero's journey. It's not characters or words or making sense. It's an ending. All stories end. So, when we look at the weird route and the rest of Deltarune as two different stories, we can see one possible answer to the riddle "how is there only one ending?". They'll both end.

The parallel also makes sense in a literal sense. How can a comedy and a tragedy have the same ending? By interpreting that ending differently. If the world of Deltarune, or even just the Dark Worlds, were to end at the story's conclusion, don't you think that could be interpreted differently depending on the journey that brought you there?
