also, the fact that one of the first subplots of s2 casts beloved characters as undocumented migrant workers trying to avoid detection by a fascist state that both depends on their labor and criminalizes their presence, feels very... timely, considering the circumstances in the US right now

"star wars is becoming too political"

oh noo, the star wars that was initially inspired by the vietnam war, anti-fascist resistance, and the fall of democratic institutions? the saga in which a literal space dictatorship rises through manipulation and fear, and a ragtag rebellion fights for freedom?

the surface gets remotely cracked with andor and more intimate & realistic war struggles are finally shown, we get more commentary on how fear and propaganda erode democracy and some of y'all have the nerve to call it "too political" all of a sudden? these ppl are so dumb i can't help but laugh at them ngl

also: omg swt's take on SA in star wars. what an ignorant & stupid take, he rly tweeted that & expected applause for it lmao. (also the way hes kinda twisting the words of everyone disagreeing with him? he depicts himself as the good person in that argument bc he doesn't wanna see r@pe in a war story, sry but nahh)

star wars was always about real-world horrors & depicted them through metaphors, parallels etc. genocides, child soldiers, slavery, fascism, torture, you name it. saying smth like sexual violence doesn't "belong" is like saying space fascist should only be evil in sanitized pg-ways but that's obviously not how oppression or its depiction work.

pretending it wouldn't exist in star wars is not only overly naive, and "vader wouldn't tolerate it"? that man who literally almost choked his pregnant wife to death after she got "turned against him"? and some years after that, he also tortured his own daughter on the death star, but ofc our fav superhero vader wouldn't tolerate any of that. the empire thrives on dehumanization, on silencing their victims, of fucking course things like SA happen & totally happen every day under that system.

not liking the depiction & not wanting to see it is completely valid but that doesn't mean it doesn't have a place in the story or in fictional stories in general. just like gory scenes in r-rated films, the discomfort serves a purpose; and imo it gives voice to those who have been through similar things irl. hearing a sentence like "he tried to rape me" spoken aloud in my fav media felt oddly validating to me, and personally i couldn't be happier abt andor's depiction of irl struggles. it's uncomfy, rough, dark & dirty but to me that's such a selling point on showing the evil's impact & what it actually looks like.

there was a moment when the people in the movie theatre and the capitol audience in the stands were laughing at the same things, having the same reactions to the games, to the deaths, to flickermans jokes, to the doctor's announcement...i wonder aren't we watching it for entertainment too

suzanne collins' books may exist in popular culture as "dystopian", but they have always been a meticulous and startlingly close social critique of our world. at what point does our own idolization of the movies and the books repeat that story? we watch just as the capitol audience does.

all dystopia eventually crosses a line from realistic futurism to current relevancy. how long will it take us to realize we've already crossed that line with these books? and the very people who need to realize this are the ones in that audience...real or fake, we're the same: consuming and consuming.

YES. THIS.

There is absolutely, absolutely , no way to watch, read or consume the hunger games without placing yourself in the position of the Capitol. It's impossible.

In the first one we want Katniss to win because she's the main character and our favourite tribute and so we don't care when she kills other tributes as long as she survives. Her suffering is fictional to us because we can turn off the TV or close the book and have the ability to separate our reality from the hell of the games. Which is exactly what the Capitol citizens do.

The games are an annual entertainment, much like the movies' releases generate excitement because they're for our entertainment.

The film industry might distract from this by promoting the love triangles and assigning people districts or victors for fun as a marketing strategy, but it still can't completely brush aside the fact that all though these characters are fictional, we cry over their deaths, root for our favourites, we watch it as entertainment, something that almost disguises the premise of oppressed children killing each other until all that remains is the hype around the movies.

All in all, when you consume the hunger games, you're no better than the Capitol.
