obligated by my soul to tell everyone that the u.s. coast guard trained pigeons in the late seventies to spot people lost and floating in the ocean. as a deep, deep lover of pigeons it’s important to me that you know how SMART these birds are.

the coast guard specifically trained pigeons to spot orange targets (aka a life vest) in the ocean while housed in an area on the underside of helicopters. during testing, pigeons found the target 90% OF THE TIME! and pigeons found the target before the human could 84% OF THE TIME!

all of this to say, if you take one thing away from post, let it be this psa created the u.s. coast guard. this little man’s tiny hat and binoculars has been seared into my head and now i bestow this image upon you all.

i was so scared of open water as a kid that I frequently thought about how there must be fish scared of the open water too

which in retrospect, it’s hilarious to imagine my parents seeing the sheer horror in my eyes as I explained this thought to them

as my first post i would like to share with everyone a shark fun fact that forever rolls around noggin like a pebble in my shoe that just will not come out.

the bonnethead shark was discovered to be the world’s first omnivorous shark. the tiniest guy of the hammerhead family will go around the sea floor grazing on seagrass like he’s on a damn dairy farm. this critter doesn’t just have some greens on occasion. their diet, and i am not even remotely joking, can be up to 60% seagrass and other plant matter!!! (your mind better be blown by now)

AND BEYOND THAT! they are actually able to digest the plants they eat. that may not sound so wild but many creatures eat things their bodies are not built to consume. they won’t keel over and die, they just can’t actually take in any of the nutrients of the food. SO, the bonnethead shark actually being able to digest these plants in a species that is notoriously carnivorous is just undeniably fascinating. (i bet your mouth is just fully agape from shock and awe rn, i can’t imagine how it wouldn’t be)
