Turnberry is a world top-20 golf course, a host of major championships, and iconic venue for golf’s greatest ever head-to-head shoot-out in 1977, ‘the duel in the sun’. At face value you could be forgiven for thinking there isn’t much scope to improve it. Well since buying it last year Donald Trump was never likely to sit back and pat himself on the back.
Trump has said that he intends building the best par 3 in the world. We aren’t so sure that his recently unveiled plans aren’t also going to add the best par 5 to his portfolio either.
We take a look at his proposals, and invite you to do the same and see what you think. We asked one simple question for the nine holes that have been earmarked for enhancement. Are they better solutions than the current ones? As you might imagine, we had different levels of enthusiasm on a hole by hole basis (that’s normal), even so, we still found ourselves generating a scoreboard of nine nil in favour of the proposals.
The course looks likely to draw particular attention to the 9th, 10th, and 11th which we can’t decide whether they should be dubbed the three graces in recognition of their beauty and the neighbouring ‘maidens’ on the adjoining coastline, or the theee witches, in trepidation of their apparent spellbinding qualities and capacity to nasty. Turnberry is after all, a Scottish course so the Macbeth connection might have traction. When looking at the tee shot on the ninth and the drive over the ocean to the wall of crags beyond, we were kind of struck by the phrase ‘rocky horror’ were we required to play this!
