Melanoma is a type of skin cancer that rapidly mutates and develops in the skin’s pigment cells, called melanocytes, and is very serious. Four main types of melanoma are superficial spreading melanoma usually on torso, arms, or legs; nodular melanoma appears on the head, neck, or torso; lentigomaligna melanoma on skin overexposed to sun; acrallentiginous melanoma on the palms, soles, or under the nails. Early symptoms of melanoma are changes in an existing mole, unusual pigment, spots or lumps, red spots, sores on the skin, etc. Causes are a weakened immune system, fair or pale skin, excessive UV light exposure, etc. Treatment varies like surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, immunotherapy, or targeted therapy.
