WHAT IS A TECH PACK?

A Tech Pack provides vital information required to manufacture a garment for production. The Tech Pack includes thorough details about all aspects of the garment and is used for all communication regarding the garment in the production cycle. The designer, tech team, and sometimes the merchandisers are responsible for the creation of the Tech Pack.

It is used by the Merchandisers to ensure that all required fabrics and components are available for the manufacturing process. The Marketing Team may also use the Tech Pack during their presentations to large department stores and key customers.

The more detailed and clear the Tech Pack, the more efficient the Production cycle and the more accurately the garment is executed, based on the designer’s vision. The more effectively the information in the Tech Pack is communicated, the more accurate the price quotes, the better quality and consistency, and the more organized the production process overall.

Tech Packs include the following key components:

Detailed Photograph of Garment (Front/Back and Side, if asymmetrical)

Illustration of the Garment

Body Details (Body and Trim/Lining…Photos may be included here)

Details of Trims/Embroideries/Graphics (Photos may be included here)

Points of Measurements (POM Front/Back and Side, if asymmetrical)

Fabric/Color Details

Season Information

Label Info (including LOGO and Wash/Care instructions)

ILLUSTRATOR Quick Tip: Creating Outlines

To Create Outlines (convert type to paths and anchor points for EDITING):

Go to the Pull Down Menu>Type>CREATE OUTLINES

You will now have only paths and anchor points that *look like type*, but are no longer editable as type (so typos will be there *FOREVER*)

BEST BET: Save a copy of the file as Live Type and another copy with Outlines created!

ILLUSTRATOR QUICK TIP: Duplicating and Transforming Objects

—Select the object you wish to duplicate, hold down Option key and drag. You have now TRANSFORMED the object by duplicating the object. (and on the same layer!)

—Each time you press Cmd/Cntrl + D (Transform Again) you DUPLICATE more copies, with the SAME spacing and orientation.

This feature is great for creating multiples, such as buttons, type, color chips, etc.

ILLUSTRATOR QUICK TIP: Rearranging the Stacking Order

As we begin to create our flats, we’ll see that as we create shapes, they will automatically move to the TOP of the Stacking Order. To rearrange the order of your paths/shapes, do the following:

Select the object that needs to be rearranged in the stacking order.

Right+Click: Arrange>Bring to Front or Bring to Back

(TIP: It’s easier to manage your objects and view stacking order when they’re filled with color!)

ILLUSTRATOR QUICK TIP: Copying Multiple Anchor Points

Copying ANCHOR POINTS also copies the LINE SEGMENTS attached to that ANCHOR on both sides.

So to copy part of a “LINE”, you actually need to copy the ANCHOR points associated with that line. To copy multiple anchor points and their line segments, either use SHIFT+SELECT the anchors, or use the DIRECT SELECTION LASSO in Illustrator to copy just the parts of the path you wish to copy.
