Iwaizumi x Reader A Cinderella Story AU
Chapter 2
Warnings: A Cinderella Story and Haikyuu donât belong to me. Also, keep in mind that the movie was made in 2004, so some things are outdated. Thereâs minor swearing, but just from Iwaizumi.
When two completely different people in real life connect online, what will unfold? Iwaizumi is a part of the popular volleyball boy group. (Y/n), on the other hand, is a total nerd or âloserâ. Online, though, they talk everyday and have so much in common. What happens when these online personas meet in person?

(Y/n) is walking to class when sheâs stopped by someone. âOh (Y/n)! Hello, you look very beautiful today as usual!â âThank you very much Paku.â He nods and pushes up his glasses. âYes, now excuse me, my galaxy is calling me.â He took out some type of metallic ball and brought the antenna up. âHello?â (Y/n) shook her head before walking back to her classroom. âSometimes fantasy is better than reality.â The final bell rang as she sat down for class.
It was finally a free period in the library, so (Y/n) sat down in front of the computer. She immediately pulls up mystery boyâs email to talk.
Hello? Do you have this block free? I want to talk to you.
Mysteryboy609
Yes.
Mysteryboy609
I was just about to ask you how your day has been so far.
Ugh, with my hysterical stepmom, work, and people who think theyâre better than others, not so good. Have you ever felt like an outsider before, mystery boy?
Mysteryboy609
Of course. Sometimes I feel my friends can be a bit much. But then again, I wouldnât trade them for the world, even though Iâd never say that.
Mysteryboy609
Of course our chats are also a big help.
(Y/n) smiles behind the screen, a slight flush rushing up her cheeks before she responds.
Do you think weâve met before?
Mysteryboy609
Maybe. The school has a lot of people.
At a nearby computer, mystery boy, or Iwaizumi, is smiling slightly as he types to mystery girl. He thinks about the conversation and a sour mood falls over him. What if the whole time he was texting Matsukawa or Hanamaki? Or even worse, Oikawa? He types out his response.
Mysteryboy609
I can rule out the guys though, right? Youâre a girl and not a man?
If you were a guy Iâd might have to kill you.
No, Iâm a girl, donât worry.
The block ends and she stands up from her chair. Iwaizumi, who was across from her, also stands up. They smile politely at each other but leave it at that. They donât know each other, not in person, at least.
After school, Iwaizumi heads off to volleyball practice, and (Y/n) goes to work. After her shift, she emails mystery boy. As Iwaizumi finishes up practice, he sees an email from mystery girl. He smiles slightly, but decides to open it later. His team still needs to do group stretches before practice is officially over. âIwa! Come on!â He sees Hanamaki, Matsukawa, and Oikawa waving for him. He sips from his water bottle before jogging back to the court. âI know your ass isnât talking Lazykawa.â
(Y/n) waits by her phone, seeing if it will illuminate with a new message. She had emailed him what felt like forever ago. She stands up and paces around the room. Does he not want to talk? She grabs her roller skates for work and adjusts the shoe laces. Just as she finishes that up, her phone buzzes. She pounces on the phone to see itâs from mystery boy. A large grin paves its way onto her face as she opens her phone to reply.
Have you told your dad about wanting to move to California?
They had been talking since he finished dinner, which was around 7. Itâs now 2 in the morning and theyâre still up. (Y/n) had picked up some papers to work on to be âproductiveâ, but she wasnât really paying attention to her school work.
Mysteryboy609
No. He has my whole life planned out for me.
My dad always taught me to fight for my dreams.
Mysteryboy609
Not mine. He would be furious if I even suggested moving 30 minutes from Miyagi.
Itâs 2 am. Weâve been talking for 5 hours now.
Mysteryboy609
I think we broke our record of 3 and a half hours.
We should sleep. We still have school in the morning. Sweet dreams.
Mysteryboy609
Wait, I wonât be able to sleep properly if I donât know who you are. For the school festival there will be a haunted house. Iâll be there at 11:00. Will you meet me there?
Iâll sleep on it. Good night mystery boy.
From behind the screen, Iwaizumi sighs and places his head in his hands. How much longer will he have to wait? He stares at the screen for a brief moment before typing again.
Mysteryboy609
Okay. Sweet dreams.
October 31, the day of the festival
âOkay but youâre an idiot if you reject that.â Chuzo puts a softball in an automatic ball thrower as (Y/n) swings but hits sorely. âI donât know. What if he meets me and Iâm not what he expects? Or even worse, what if heâs a teacher pretending to be a student?â Chuzo dodges the next ball that comes towards him. âOr, what if heâs the perfect guy for you and you guys get happily married.â She swings again but the bat and ball hit at a weird angle, sending it to the ground again. âThat sounds like a fairy tale. This relationship thing we have going isnât going to work once we meet in real life.â Chuzo pauses from putting the softball in the automatic thrower. âHe wants to meet up with you. You two have been talking since school started all the way back in April. If he didnât like you, I think weâd know by now.â (Y/n) pauses for a moment too. Just as sheâs about to speak, her stepmom calls.
â(Y/n)! Someone ate the rest of my octopus and I need more of it. Also, I need you to take my car to the wash and my clothes to the dry cleaner.â âOh, okay. Iâll be there shortly.â After the call, she clips her phone to her skirt waist band. âWho was that?â âFuwari. Always making demands. If it werenât for her paying for California, I donât know if Iâd put up with it.â As Chuzo loads the next ball, (Y/n) imagines Fuwariâs annoying face and hits the ball out into the next field.
In the field beside the baseball field, Iwaizumi and Oikawa are passing a volleyball to each other. âAre you and Shiina still going to the dance together?â Oikawa rolls his eyes slightly when he hears that. âI donât know, weâve been arguing more than usual. What about you? Are you going to go with someone?â Iwaizumi smiles slightly and catches the ball. âMaybe, I donât know if sheâll show upâŠâ He passes it overhand this time, but Oikawa catches it. âIs it that mystery girl youâve been emailing?â âPass the ball, Shittykawa!â âSo vulgar!â A softball rolls into the field and Iwaizumi throws it back to the girl in the other field. âNice hit!â âThank you!â
After that last hit, (Y/n) went to her house to pick up the car and Fuwariâs clothes. She had her license, but she rarely drove since Fuwari didnât buy her a car. Plus, it was good exercise anyway to walk. After dropping off the clothes, she went to the car wash, per Fuwariâs request.
Iwaizumi shifted in the itchy shirt his dad had him wear. It was the uniform for the car place his dad owned. He was forced to work there as a part time job. Once he saw his dad, he jogged to catch up to him. âDad? Hey I was-â âYou were trying to move to California and enter sports science?â He paused as his dad faced him. âYou went into my room?â âJust stay here and continue volleyball during college. You can work here at the shop part time. Youâll be the star ace of the Japanese Olympic team!â âBut what if I wanted other options?â His dad shrugged that off and patted his shoulder. âYou donât need other options, you have the perfect life already planned out. Just donât. Mess. Up.â He frowns slightly before wiping it off to get the next customer.
A girl pulled in with a light pink car that didnât really seem like it suited her. She drives kinda stiff and has a slight frown on her face. She parks beside where Iwaizumi is stationed and rolls the window down. âIs the car ready?â He asks, noting that she goes to his school. What was her name again? âOh, yeah. Iâm pretty sure anyways.â She had a more pleasant expression for politeness. He examines it before noting something down. âYou need a wax.â Her frown from earlier comes back stronger now. âExcuse me?â He looked up when she said that and realized how wrong it sounded out of context. âI meant the car.â âOh, sorry.â He checks for more things before checking her off.
Beep! Both of them look over to see two filthy cars pull in. Benisa and Gurimu got out immediately after. âIwaizumi! Our cars are dirty and they need cleaning!â âYeah! Come clean our cars!â Theyâre both waving their arms widely and giggling like schoolgirls. âYes, Iâll get to you in a moment.â He returns to talking to (Y/n), handing her something and giving instructions for the car wax.
Once he leaves, (Y/n) gets out of the car with her arms crossed. âWhy did you purposefully get your cars dirty on purpose? Thatâs so stupid.â âTo see Iwaizumi, duh.â âI donât get why everyone fawns over Oikawa. Have you seen Iwaizumiâs biceps???â âBesides, what are you, a mechanic or something?â The twins talk back and forth, giggling the whole time. By now, theyâre arguing with each other. âOh, and you need to go see my mom. She wants to talk to you.â (Y/n) raises her eyebrows before heading to the car. She picks up the octopus before heading home.
âHey, you wanted to see me?â (Y/n) strolls into the backyard. There, Fuwari is in a tanning bed. She opens it up and (Y/n) shields her eyes. âYes, I did.â (Y/n) has her fingers crossed behind her back. She hopes that maybe Fuwari will let her go to the festival tonight. That, and maybe sheâs more open to moving to California. âIâm so happy you finished running errands. Now I need you to go to the cafe again.â âOh, but itâs my day off today. I was actually hoping to go to the festival tonight.â Fuwari crossed her legs. âThatâs nice and all, but you need to be more selfless and care about other people besides yourself. You donât do anything for this family, so you can work at the cafe tonight.â âBut I really need to go tonight!â âYou need the money for California more.â âWith my grades I get tons of scholarships to help with the costs. Plus I signed up for a program-â âNow that youâre older, I have something I need to say.â Thereâs a small pause as (Y/n) looks up with hope. âYouâre not very pretty, and youâre not very bright. So glad we had that talk.â
(Y/n) goes back inside with slumped shoulders and a scowl. âFuwari never lets me have anything. How will I get to meet mystery boy now?â Sighing, she gets her outfit ready. âI hate this stupid dress and that stupid maid cafe.â Afterwards, she heads to her work instead of the festival. Will mystery boy still wait there for her? Or, will he leave?

What happens when two seemingly polar opposites are put right beside each other in class? Reader is a talkative girl with a smart mouth. Despite her quick words, she loves romance. Tsukishima isâŠ.himself. When theyâre assigned seats next to each other, will they get along?
Y/nâs POV
This week felt like it took a million years to pass. With Stingeyshima beside me in my classes, it felt even worse. Finally, though, itâs Sunday. Now I get to surround myself with my friends! I sigh dreamily at the thought, pulling myself out of bed. After I get ready I need to go to the craft store to pick some things up. Iâm meeting the rest of the girls there too.
Once Iâm dressed for the day, I go downstairs to see my brother and his friends already there. âWhereâs mom and dad?â Kenji glances up briefly from the game heâs playing with his friends. âTheyâre running some errands. They left earlier this morning when I got up.â I hum softly and head to the kitchen. Their game ended and Kenji led them to the table. âYou know, youâre like the best sister ever. Have I told you that recently? If I havenât, I should do it more often because youâre sooo great.â I notice him elbowing his friends and whisper something to them. His best friend- Ritsu Sasaki- chimes in too. âYeah, youâre always so nice, kind, and caring.â âDo you guys want something?â Kenji beams at that, âJust breakfast. Please! Youâre so good at cooking and mom and dad havenât taught me yet.â I tilt my head slightly, acting as if Iâm thinking it through. âHmm, okay.â
âThis is not what I meant by the way.â I laugh slightly as I glance over at Kenji. I had pulled some old aprons I had from when I was way more into baking and everyone thought that was a perfect gift. Right now, I have him and his 3 friends in the aprons helping me cook. âWhat, do you think Iâm your maid or something? This is a good learning moment for all of you.â I instruct one of his friends with a buzz cut to get my ingredients out. âNo offense (Y/n)-san, but how is this helpful?â Sasaki is getting more and more like Kenji. At first he was more quiet, but I guess heâs been around so long that heâs grown more comfortable. âYouâre not going to be a lazy bum in the future. Not if I can help it, at least.â
We make soufflĂ© pancakes, and everyone seems pleased with their work. The group talks about whatever is happening at their school right now while I finish up my pancake. I check the time after drying my plate off. âDonât do anything stupid while no one is here. Iâm heading to that one cute craft store, and Aikaâs house, so I wonât be too far away.â I grab my purse and check to make sure I have my wallet, phone, and keys. âYeah, yeah. Weâre not dumb. Weâll be inside playing video games until mom and dad come back home.â âMkay, bye!â âBye!â They all wave bye and I do too.
Afterwards, I head out of the house and jog to the store. Aikaâs probably already there, I bet. Sheâs so punctual. Then again, it could be because she got her brother to drop her off.
I arrive at the same time as Kimura and Mizuno. Aika gets up from the bench she was sitting on and walks closer to us. âIâm so glad you guys are here now! I was scared Iâd get charged with loitering.â âHavenât you only been here for like, 3 minutes before us?â Kimura tilts her head slightly. Her hair is pulled back into a ponytail. Aika twists one of her curls around her finger a little nervously. âYeah, but some older couple gave me a dirty look.â
We wait a few minutes when we see Miruka and Miori walk our way. They both wave with a grin when they see us. âHey!â âDid we keep you guys long?â We head inside as we make small talk and we all grab a shopping basket. âWhat do you guys plan on making?â I ask, looking at a wheel of lace before adding it to my cart. âDefinitely some hair accessories. They save so many bad hair days,â Aika says, grabbing some headbands. âOooh thatâs a good idea. Iâm making keychains for my bag,â Kimura adds.
Once weâre done, we head to the checkout. We ring up our items and bag them. Afterwards, we head back outside. âWait! I told my brother to pick us up after we were done. I texted him in the store, so he should be here any minute now.â Aika placed her arm out while she was talking to stop us from walking. Soon enough, an SUV pulls up to the store and Aikaâs brother- Sakuto- rolls down the window. âGet in losers, weâre going shopping.â âSakuto, youâre not Regina George.â Aika sighs while opening the doors for us. âUgh! Do you know what everyone says about you? They say that youâre a homeschooled jungle freak, thatâs a less hot version of me!â âI shouldâve never shown you that movie.â âAika, I wouldâve watched it regardless, no matter if you showed it to me or not.â He makes sure weâre all buckled before pulling off.
Aika and Sakuto look very much like each other, and their mom. They both have curly hair and light brown skin. Plus, they have matching moles on their right cheek. âAika, youâre using me as your personal limo service, you know?â âThanks for that, by the way.â He turns on the radio to some rock station. âSakuto-kun! This music stinks!â Miori wails from the back, clamping her ears shut. He turns up the music more. âHuh? I canât hear you over my music!â The rest of the ride is pretty peaceful and filled with small talk.
We got to Aikaâs house and headed straight to her room. Her room is ocean themed and itâs so cute! She has jellyfish decorations around the room and led lights. âMy sewing machine is on that desk.â She sets down her bags and plops down on the floor. We all lay down around her and get to work. Someone plays âPerfect Nightâ by Le Sserafim. Everything is so perfect, especially after how the school week went.
The conversation is relatively light as we work on our crafts. Weâve all just been laughing and showing our work to each other. Mizuno and Kimura are whispering something to each other. Iâm glad theyâre not completely alone. Itâd suck to have to third wheel a friend group. âIf I tell you guys something, would you tell anyone?â Mizuno speaks up and sets her current bracelet aside. âI mean, as long as you didnât murder someone without a reason. Or cheat on someone.â Miruka says, setting her work aside too. âNo, nothing like that. Itâs justâŠdo you guys know Okuno? In class 1-5?â We shake our heads no. âOh, well I like him, since like, my 2nd year in middle school. I hope this year he finally asks me out.â Thereâs a chorus of affirmation as the conversation switches to love.
âDo any of you guys have a crush?â Aika immediately averts her gaze and flushes at the question. Miori grabs her shoulder lightly and shakes it. âOh, now you have to tell us!â âPlease, I donât want to even say I like someone yet. I just think heâs cute. Besides, we barely know each other, so itâd be kinda shallow if I said I had a crush on him.â Miruka nods while stroking her imaginary beard. âSo wise, Aika.â Kimura switches her gaze to me. âYou know, you and your seat mate would look so cute together.â Miori is quick to sneer. She looks at Kimura with disgust. âSeriously?! Tsukishima is such a jerk! My precious (Y/n) and him would NEVER be compatible!â She sticks out her tongue and points at it to make a point. Miruka shifts slightly with a sly grin. âI donât know, to me it sounds like enemies to lovers.â
Mizuno tilts her head to the left. âMiruka san, are you an otaku?â Miruka scoffs and rolls her eyes. âMe? An otaku? Never! Thatâs such a nerdy thing to do.â Most of the girls nod in agreement. I fall back from the conversation. I can never tell them that I read shojo manga. Theyâd think I was a total geek! Miori already says that because Iâm in an advanced class, but telling them Iâm kind of an otaku would be the cherry on top.
âAnyways, though, you and Tsukishima are going to fall in love. Iâm calling it now.â Miruka redirects the conversation back to me. âIâd rather die alone than even think about Tsukishima in a positive light. The only good thing about him is his friend Yamaguchi.â Miruka hums in a knowing manner. âTonight Iâm going to write it down in my journal.â My head snaps to her direction. âNo, donât!â Mizuno and Kimura look at each other with furrowed eyebrows and slightly frowns before turning to us. âWhatâs wrong with her journal?â âAlmost everything she writes in there comes true.â Aika says, looking a little nervous and scared. âItâs cause my sister is a witch!â Miruka hits Miori in the head with a pillow.
Afterwards, everything is fine. We all talk about regular things, and my alleged love life is swept under a rug. I prop my head in my hands.âWhat clubs are you guys joining?â âSo glad you asked.â Miruka shuffles through her work and holds up a poster. âIâm running for class president.â She passes out election pins. âMake sure to vote for me.â I smile and pin it to my shirt. âIâm taking photography. My scrapbook will be so full by the end of the year!â Aika fiddles with some paper, making an origami swan. âIâm doing choir. I heard Okuno is taking it too, so hopefully weâll be together!â âIâll do track. I donât think Iâll cut my hair, though.â Kimura brings her ponytail to the front and plays with it. âObviously volleyball.â Miori shrugs while finalizing a bracelet. âIâm going to do cheerleading again.â âLucky, the outfits are so cute.â I smile slightly. âI know. Itâs my second favorite part after the actual cheering.â
Eventually, we all pack up and leave. We say bye to Aika who walks us out until we split up. As I walk alone, I slip in my headphones. I already finished the first part of the romance audio book I got, so now Iâm on part two. I get to chapter 2 when I get home. I can hear noise coming from the back, so I skip off my headphones and head to the backyard. There, my brother and his friends are playing volleyball. Kenji and Ritsu see me and wave me over. â(Y/n) san, you should be the referee.â I walk over and set my bag in a chair. âWhat am I even supposed to do?â They show me the poses for refereeing, and thatâs what Iâm stuck doing.
Two of the friends leave early, but Ritsu stays. Iâm heading to my room when I glance back to see the two following me. âWhat do you two want?â âSister dearest, we just want to hear the tea from girls day.â Kenji clasps his hands together and smiles. âYes, tell us whatâs happening girlfriend.â Ritsu shakes his hair. âUh, no.â I go into my room and shut the door behind me. Once Iâm out of my clothes and into pajamas, I open it again to see those two still standing out there. âI have the slideshow for how to get a boyfriend.â And Kenji looks so serious saying this. ââŠ.Just hurry your ass and get in.â I open the door for them and they skip in giggling.
The rest of the night I spent talking. Who knew talking to your little brother and his best friend could be so rewarding? Theyâre actually kind of funny when theyâre not being too stupid. Maybe itâs his other friends who are the weird ones. It gets late though, so I kick them out to read Nana. â(Y/n)! We didnât even go over the slideshow!â âYeah! You need it!â I push them out and shut my door behind them. I lay down in my bed and grab Nana off of my bedside table. I could get used to this.

âWe should stop this thing we have.â Those were the words I said that ended it all. (Y/n) looked up at me with those wide eyes, bottom lip trembling slightly. âBut tonight was so fun, was it not? We-IâŠ.why?â Stupid, arrogant me at the time simply folded his hands together. âI have a promising career in volleyball. Besides, this was only a fling. I told you I wouldnât be here long.â I couldâve salvaged it and lent out an inviting hand. I couldâve said âjoin me, please I canât see myself without you.â But, instead, âIâm flying out to Argentina soon. I donât need any strings, do I?â With a cold, surgical precision I usually reserve for my serves, I left. I left and Iâm a coward for that. I donât deserve-
âHello? Oikawa?â I snap my eyes back to the present. The girl in front of me has her head tilted slightly and her hand slowly lowering back down. âHmm? Sorry, I was just getting lost in your eyes, theyâre so beautiful.â She giggles at that and glances down shyly. Does she realize Iâm lying? âOh, please. Youâre such a flirt.â She lightly hits my chest and I take that moment to grab her hand. âWhat? I canât compliment a gorgeous woman?â I lean down to kiss her hand as she looks at me with round eyes, kind of like how (Y/n) used to.
Although Iâm acting saccharine sweet, Iâm not truly enjoying myself. This girl- Hana- is sweet and all, but Iâm distracted. (Y/n)âs face lingers in my head. Iâll look at Hana and see anotherâs face. Itâs not fair to either of them. If I actually knew what was good for me, I wouldnât have agreed to this date just to forget (Y/n). I shouldnât have called things off in the first place. Despite saying Iâd be in Argentina by now, there was a change of plans, so Iâm still here.
Iâm not holding her hand anymore. She had taken it back to talk about something using her hands. I quip in and she laughs. My gaze wanders to the bridge opposite of this one, and time seems to freeze. Standing there, like a walking time capsule, is (Y/n). My breath catches in my chest at the sight. I know my surprise is reciprocated, but I can only hope that my longing is too. Their eyes seem heavy, and that crushes the hope in my chest. I return my gaze back to Hana, who is catching her breath from laughing.
âOh, Oikawa, you have such a way with words!â She gets an alert from her phone and looks up. âAw, I guess I have to go. The guy Iâm talking to has answered his phone.â I blink and tilt my head. âHuh?â Sheâs already picking up her purse from the bench she had set it down, a risky move by the way, and putting her phone back. âYeah, I canât believe itâs this late too! Youâre such a good friend though! Iâm glad to have met someone I can talk to.â Friend? I kissed her hand! âOh, yeah, right. Have fun on your date!â She waves bye and I stand there. Well, at least I donât have to pretend anymore.
My glaze flits back to where (Y/n) was. I notice their silhouette moving towards the trash can and bolt. Maybe Iâll still have enough time to apologize. Maybe I can still fix things between us. Iâm certain of it. A broad smile makes its way across my face at the thought of it. I slow down so it doesnât seem like I was rushing over here, even though I was. I hesitate for a moment before going in and grabbing their arm.
â(Y/n)?â I hear them sigh and snatch their arm back. For a moment Iâm hurt, but I accept it. It has been 3 weeks after all. My eyebrows are slightly raised and I think they clock that. I try to stand in a neutral way, not to look too eager or too aloof. âI didnât think youâd be here.â How smart of me-âDo you even think in general?â Huh? I thought theyâd be pleased to see me a little. I open my mouth to apologize, but Iâm instantly cut off before I can even begin.
âWhat the hell is wrong with you?! You love on me and break down my walls just to cut things off in cold blood. Then, 3 weeks later, youâre all wrapped around some other girl like we had nothing! Did you not feel anything then? Do you not feel anything now? Youâre playing someone else again! What, is it that normal for you to be shitty? Do you not care about what others feel, or are you so caught up with yourself you donât even notice?â
I really need to apologize. They think I didnât feel anything when I broke it off? That Iâm playing someone else? All I do is feel. âI-â âNo, Iâm not playing your games, Oikawa. I hope that girl youâre talking to figures you out before she has to learn the hard way. Goodbye, please donât ever reach out to me again.â Then, theyâre gone.
I watch as their outline begins to fade out of my vision. A quiet ache begins in my chest that I canât keep down. I slowly walk back to the hotel that I stay at. Once I get into my room, I sink to the floor, clutching my chest. The tears I was holding back come out like floodgates. The one good thing I had and of course I ruined it. Why didnât I just stay? Why couldnât I have just been content with what I had before I lost it? Will I stay like this forever, constantly reaching for more but being denied.
As I sit there, tears flowing down my cheeks as hiccups escape my throat, I realize I am just Icarus. I flew too close to the sun and I fell into the ocean to drown. My phone buzzes and I look to see itâs a message from my manager. Iâm being flown out to Argentina again tomorrow. If that was supposed to help, knowing Iâd have to forget them, it didnât. Instead, I dwell on what couldâve been and wallow in self pity. Volleyball is the one thing Iâm kind of good at, so I should focus on that. But, if onlyâŠ

The crisp, cool air bites at my face as I step outside of my apartment complex. The once warmer October nights are fading away to a chillier November. I pull my coat tighter against me, cursing at my poorly planned outfit. I didnât wear gloves, or earmuffs, or a hat, just nothing. All I have is my coat, boots, and a desperate need for clearer thoughts. Lately, my head has been muddled by him, and that doesnât mix well with a procrastinated, late night work project.
The break up was 3 weeks ago, but he still lingers in the crevices of my brain. He was so..dreamy. Thereâs no other words to describe him but that. He was a perfect fantasy, until he broke it off to pursue his career. He told me it was only a fling, and he was just flown out here for work. It was nothing special, but it was everything to me. No matter how short lived it was.
I walk onto the bridge not too far from my apartment. The river flowing underneath is calm right now, very soothing. I remember when we would-no. Stop it right now. I canât think these thoughts about him anymore. We are over, and heâll never be mine again. He never was mine in the first place. As I walk further along the bridge, I glance over at the parallel one beside it and my jaw drops.
The tall, athletic figure. The brown curls that swoop perfectly against his forehead. And, his angel eyes, looking deep into a girlâs eyes. Wait, another girl. My heart stops on that bridge. He said he wouldnât be here for more than a month. He said he was flying back out to Argentina after his games. He said we were just nothing, just a fling. Why is he here now with someone else? Was he just lying to me the whole time?
My knees feel like jelly, so I make my way over to the nearest bench. My head drops into my hands, and the strong facade I had been putting on crumbles to pieces. Why? He came into my life so easily and broke down every defensive wall I had up just to leave me vulnerable. And now, heâs a liar, too. Tooru Oikawa is a dirty liar. He charms people just to leave them defenseless when heâs gone. Heâs nothing more than a playboy, and Iâm sadly one of his misfortunate victims.
I can feel the heat rushing to my face as shame and anger wash over me. I snap my head up to look back at them. Sheâs laughing, so perfect and carefree. Heâs looking at her like heâd sacrifice the world to hold her hand. I want to shout out, âHeâs a liar! Donât believe anything he says because all Oikawa does is lie and manipulate!â But, I canât. My anger drops back down and all I feel is this quiet ache. I canât warn her, I canât do anything. All I can do is wallow alone while they flirt and share meaningless affections.
As I watch them, I remember the times when he was mine. Back then, he would bring me flowers every time he saw me. Heâd kiss me on the cheek while in public just to get a rise out of me. Iâd turn to him, ready to playfully scold him, but heâd just give me that boyish grin of his. I couldnât say anything to him. Then, I thought weâd be forever. I was foolish to think that, and Iâm foolish now for sitting here, wishing for a man whoâs probably forgotten all about me.
The ache in my chest only gets worse. Does he know what heâs done to me? I shouldâve just stayed inside. Seeing him like this with someone else is worse than writing an amateur work paper. Theyâd forget about it, but I wonât forget this any time soon. Maybe I should see a therapist.
As I get up from the bench, done with wallowing in self pity, I notice his gaze drift over to me. For a brief moment, it seemed that his breath had caught. Maybe he did remember, and maybe he did feel guilty. Our eyes meet, and I hope that everything Iâm feeling is being communicated to him. I look away first. Iâm not a homewrecker. I bury my hands deep into my coat pockets and walk back in the direction I came from.
My boots feel like they gained an extra 15 pounds as I trudge back home. So much for a calming walk to clear my mind. It only made matters worse. Now I know heâs a liar and we never mattered. Hmm, now I know heâs a liar and we never mattered. Maybe now I can finally be free from my fantasies about what our life couldâve been. There wouldnât have been anything because he couldnât change that quickly. Heâd still be a playboy, even if we stayed. Heâd just find another reason to break it off.
Iâm supposed to feel lighter, but I donât. I reach into my coat pocket to pull out a mini journal. Iâve been keeping it on me ever since we ended things. I rip out a page and write everything Iâm feeling in there. I think my pencil will break from how hard Iâm holding it, but it lasts until Iâm done with the page. Afterwards, I rip it into pieces and throw it away. There, now Iâm better. Iâm almost away from the bridge when I feel someone grab my arm.
â(Y/n)?â I close my eyes and sigh. Why is he tormenting me? I turn around and snatch my arm back from his grasp. He raises his eyebrows slightly, but then chooses a neutral stance to hold. âI didnât think youâd be here.â âDo you even think in general?â He looks even more surprised, and I feel surprised. However, the words flow out of my mouth.
âWhat the hell is wrong with you?! Do you not care about how others feel, or are you so caught up with yourself you donât even notice?â âI-â âNo. Iâm not playing your games, Oikawa. I hope that girl youâre talking to figures you out before she has to learn the hard way. Goodbye, please donât ever reach out to me again.â I walk away, leaving him there to think.
Once I get home, I strip from my outside clothes and into my pajamas. I lay curled up in my bed and finally release the sob Iâve been holding in. For 3 weeks, Iâve been trying to get over him, and now itâs finally done. I feel a sense of loss, now that itâs officially officially over, but itâs the right thing to do. I lost sleep over him, couldnât work properly, I couldnât live like I was had. Iâll cry tonight, but future me will thank me. As the last of my cries echo out, my puffy eyes droop shut, all I think of when I fall asleep is that damned work project I still have to do. Whatever, that will be tomorrowâs problemâŠ

Long long ago, in a kingdom far away, there lived a beautiful princess with her widowed father. Although, in reality, it wasnât too long ago, just about 10 years. And, they didnât actually live in a kingdom, just a town in the Miyagi Prefecture. The girl loved her dad, and her dad loved her. They would play baseball together and listen to music in her dadâs cafe. There, it was the most wonderful cafe in all of Miyagi! The desserts were freshly baked each day, and there were never worries about too much fat or sugar. The employees were like family, and everyone was treated as such. Everything was perfect for the girl, until her dad remarried.
Her dad had thought, maybe she had missed having a mom? He married an evil, plastic-surgery loving woman with spoiled brats for daughters. Nonetheless, it would be okay. Everyone could live in harmony and as one big family, together. Even if Ms. Fuwari and her twin daughters- Benisa and Gurimu-did not like the princess (Y/n).
2 years later, (Y/n) is now 10
âHe took her hand into his and placed a kiss on it before helping her onto his horse. The beautiful princess and the handsome prince rode off happily into the sunset, the end.â As he ended the story, he did a grand hand gesture. The girl giggled with her dad. âDad, do fairy tales come true?â (Y/n) looked up at her dad with a bright, hopeful smile. âWell, fairy tales donât come true, but dreams do. When you work hard for what you want, any dream can come true,â he ruffled her hair to make her laugh again. âDo you have any dreams?â âYes, I hope that one day you can travel to anywhere you want and be able to go to college.â âAnywhere? LikeâŠâŠ.maybe California?â âIf thatâs what your heart desires.â The girl settled for that and snuggled deeper into her bed. Just as her eyes were drooping close, the whole world shook.
âEarthquake!â Her dad got up out of bed and she followed immediately. âI have to go save your stepmom and stepsisters, Iâll be back.â That day, the girl lost her father. With that, Fuwari was given everything. There was no will, so (Y/n) had nothing. She lived in the smallest room in the house while her stepmom and stepsisters got the best rooms. The cozy diner was turned into a maid cafe. The perfect life the princess once had was now over.
8 years later
Beep! Beep! Beep! Beep! Be-! With a yawn and a quick stretch, (Y/n) woke up from her slumber. She looks around, noticing the papers and highlighters surrounding her. âI fell asleep at my desk again?â Just as sheâs about to go back to sleep, another sound echoes out from the intercom system Fuwari had installed. â(Y/n)! Wake up! Itâs time for breakfast and weâre ready to be served.â She sighs at her stepmomâs harsh voice screeching in her ears. She presses the button to respond back, âIâm coming.â Afterwards, she gets dressed and ready to serve her terrible stepfamily.
â1, 2, 3, 4 and wide arms!â The aerobics instructor Fuwari hired specifically for Benisa and Gurimu yells out and makes pointed gestures to replicate what he wants to happen. The twins, on the other hand, are delayed and frankly just sloppy. âArenât my girls geniuses?â Fuwariâs voice calls out from her lawn chair. âTheyâreâŠsomething alright,â the aerobics instructor scratches his head. âUgh! Mom! Benisa farted on me!â âI couldnât hold it in any longer.â Gurimu shoved her twin underwater. âGirls! Girls! Stop it, stop it!â The instructor snaps his fingers, trying to get order again.
(Y/n) comes out of the house with breakfast for her stepfamily. âHere, breakfast is served.â She sets it on a table by Fuwari, who glances up at her. âWhy arenât you in uniform? You need to go to work.â âOh, well, I was going to stay and study some more so I can go to-â âYou know, (Y/n), people study and go to college to get a job. You have a job already, so youâre ahead and donât need college.â âBut-â âWhy are you still standing here, get to work! Now!â (Y/n) went back inside to change into her maid uniform for work. Afterwards, she sprinted to the cafe.
The energy inside was buzzing. There were plenty of customers, which always kept the place busy. âEnough with all the octopus! You have octopus pudding, octopus pancakes, octopus everything!â Rhonda, the woman who runs the cafe since Fuwari is never around, scolds the main chef. âYeah?â He picks up a dead octopus. âOh look, Fuwari eats me!â Rhonda looks at him with raised eyebrows and shakes her head. âYou are disgusting.â As she walks away and around the table, she sees (Y/n) cleaning a table.
â(Y/n)! What are you doing here? You should be at school!â âI know, I know, but Fuwari said I needed to be here, and I need her money to go to California.â She wipes off the table and collects the dishes off of it. âYour father would want you in school instead of this cafe.â (Y/n) glances up at her to see Rhonda with her arms crossed. ââŠFine. Iâll go.â She puts the dishes in the sink and grabs her bag. âBye! Iâll be back later!â She waves at everyone and heads out to her best friendâs house.
âHello Mr. Sasaki!â She bows slightly when she sees her friendâs dad outside washing his car. He bows his head back and waves. âChuzo will be out in a minute.â (Y/n) folds her hands and waits for her friend to come out. When he does, heâs tap dancing and singing some kind of musical song. Heâs dressed in one of his costumes for the new musical his club is trying to do. âChuzo, Iâm not leaving the house with you dressed like that.â âIâm practicing for my new musical! I think I look great.â He looks down at his outfit and smoothes out his pants. (Y/n) crosses her arms and he goes back inside, returning in regular clothes.
âDo you think this year Shiina will break up with Oikawa and date me instead?â âChuzo, she doesnât want you.â âYes she does! We kissed last night! âŠIn my dream.â âYouâre hopeless.â They round a corner together, and Shiina and her minions bump into them. âWatch where youâre going, yeah?â Just as theyâre about to walk again, Hanamaki accidentally bumps into them. âSorry,â he waits for his friends Oikawa, Matsukawa, and Iwaizumi to catch up before leaving. The âSeijoh 4â, (Y/n), and Chuzo have been going to the same school since middle school. The former were always more popular due to playing volleyball. The latter were âlosersâ. They never really interacted, being on different sides of the popularity spectrum. âYeah, she wants you real bad. Saw how she gave you 2 seconds of contact when she jammed into you?â (Y/n) looks up at Chuzo, who shoves her face.
Bzzt! (Y/n) smiles when she feels her phone buzz against her back pocket. She waits outside at a table before opening her phone.
Mysteryboy609
Hey, whereâve you been? We havenât talked in so long.
We spoke earlier this morning, you liar.
Mysteryboy609
Youâre on my mind all the time. Whatâs on your mind?
You answer first.
Mysteryboy609
I would say volleyball. Do you think the team will go to nationals?
Maybe.I donât really keep up with volleyball. Do you think the school festival will be earlier this year?
Mysteryboy609
I heard it would be before the game.
I hope we run into each other, I want to meet you.
She smiles slightly before typing back.
Maybe we will.
The first bell rings, so (Y/n) tucks her phone away and heads off to her class. From across where she was, Oikawa is trying to look at Iwaizumiâs phone. âWho are you texting Iwa-Chan?â Iwaizumi swats him away, frowning after. âNone of your business Shittykawa.â âWhy are you always so rude?â Both boys eventually head in after (Y/n). If only (Y/n) and Iwaizumi knew just how close they already were.

What happens when two seemingly polar opposites are put right beside each other in class? Reader is a talkative girl with a smart mouth. Despite her quick words, she loves romance. Tsukishima isâŠ.himself. When theyâre assigned seats next to each other, will they get along?
(Y/n)âs POV:
âDo you guys think that if I dye my hair blonde that Ukai will notice me?â Miori twists her hair between her fingers, seemingly caught up in her own question. âI think that you should go to therapy. Itâs not like you two could date. Heâs a grown ass man and youâre a teen.â I look for my syllabus in my bag while replying. I did bring it, right? âI know I canât date him. Iâm not that much of an idiot!â Miori kicks me to emphasize her point. âWe could be matching though.â âHe wouldnât notice. Does he even know your name?â Aika glances over with a raised eyebrow. âYes! He knows me as the louder twin!â âYouâre hopeless. My twin is hopeless.â Miruka sighs and slumps while she walks.
Once we make it to school, we decide to walk around, just talking. The first bell rings when weâre outside. âCrap! Itâs already almost time to head in?â Miruka glances at her watch with a scowl. âWhat, youâre not excited for grueling school work?â âShut up.â Eventually, we split up and head to our classrooms. When I enter, I notice Tsukishima is already there. Ugh, how annoying! Couldnât he have waited or something? He glances up at me and tilts his head. What the hell does that mean? I scoff, but I return my attention to my conversation. Aika looks at me with a weird look before acting like she did before. Is there something wrong?
I sit down at my desk and notice that his head is down. Is he a vampire or something? Edward Cullen wannabe. He seems so- â(Y/n).â I look over to Aika, who seems a little serious. âHmm?â âAre you going to just glare at him all day?â I frown a little at that. âNo, I just glanced over.â âMaybe you should apologize? Then, this whole thing could be over.â I look at her with a gaping mouth and raised eyebrows. âApologize?â âYeah, you did ask him if he was born with a stick up his ass. Maybe just apologizing will fix everything.â I get where sheâs coming from, but I donât want to apologize to him. Aika has always been a hyper polite person, so it makes sense she would want me to apologize. I consider just telling her no, but the way she looks at me so wholeheartedly changes my mind. âFine.â
Gym Class
Itâs finally gym class, so we have to change. As Iâm swapping my shirt, I notice Aika scooting closer beside me. âHm?â I hum lightly. She wants to say something, but she thinks sheâs discreet. âAre you going to say sorry in this class?â âYeah, probably. Maybe we just got off on a rough start. Who knows? He mightâve been on his period.â We both giggle slightly before looking in the mirror. âCould I borrow your extra lipgloss?â âYeah, sure.â After adjusting little things, we walk into the gymnasium.
We get a few minutes of free time before class actually starts, so I immediately go to Tsukishima. Heâs standing with his friend from yesterday. The kind one with freckles and green hair. âHi! Could I talk to Tsukishima alone, please?â He glances over at Tsukishima, seemingly talking with just eyes. How sweet! That reminds me of that one manga I was reading about soulmates- âYeah, of course.â The kind guy walks over to somewhere else, so now Iâm alone with Tsukishima. He glances down at me with nothing other than disgust and annoyance. I bite back the insult on the tip of my tongue before speaking. âHey, Iâm just sorry for yesterday and what I said. That was really mean and audacious of me. Iâm sorry.â I feel a weight leave my chest. Aika was right, apologizing really was- âAnd?â
I look up at him and heâs just standing there with an unimpressed look. That jerk! I put my whole heart into that! Well, maybe not my whole heart, but itâs not like it was half-assed! âAnd? Iâm saying sorry for yesterday. Is there nothing more you can say?â âIâm just confused. Am I supposed to care?â My slight frown deepens into a full blown scowl. I can see the beginning of a smirk forming on his face. Does he seriously think this is funny?! âYeah, Iâm so sorry for calling an asshole what he is. Is it tiring being such a dick?â âWell am I an asshole or a dick?â Aika glides over and takes my arm, dragging me away. He smiles and I roll my eyes.
âSee?! He doesnât deserve being apologized to, heâs just a stupid, stupid, stupid-!â âI get it. Sorry, I was wrong about apologizing to him.â She looks genuinely sad over it, with her frown and rounded eyes. âTch, you shouldnât be sorry, he should be.â By now, the teacher is here and beginning class instruction. Normally Iâd shut up by now, but I guess Iâm on a rampage. âHeâs so arrogant! I wish I could-â âLadies in the back. Is there something youâd want to share with the class?â The teacher has a hand on his hip and a brow cocked. My face burns and I know Aika is feeling way worse than I am. âYeah, is there something you want to share with the class?â Tsukishima says it softly enough for the teacher not to notice, but just loud enough for me to hear. I stick my tongue out and drag my eyelid down. He mutters something about me being âsooo matureâ.
âAlright class, I have a cup full of colorful sticks. For each color there are two sticks. After I call your name, you will pick a stick from the cup, and after roll call the person with the corresponding stick will be your partner for todayâs class. Does anything need to be repeated?â No one spoke, so the teacher began attendance. â(Y/l/n) (Y/n)!â I got up and grabbed my stick. Hmm, purple. âAika whatâs your color?â âI got grey.â âReally? I got purpleâŠwho do you think your partner will be?â âI donât know, hopefully not your seatmate though.â âOh yeah, if I got Suckyshima Iâd have to jump or something.â I uncross my legs and subtly kick Tsukishima, who stood up in front of me to get his stick. He sends a glare my way, but I just shrug. âSorry, I was uncrossing my legs.â
The kind, green haired boy, Yamaguchi, is called last. âFind your partners.â I glance down at Yamaguchiâs stick, which is also purple. I tap his shoulder and he looks up at me. âWe have the same stick, come on.â I say bye to Aika before finding a spot to stand with Yamaguchi. Our objective is to pass a ball back and forth while asking ice breaker questions. I bow slightly before saying my name, âMy name is (Y/n) (Y/l/n).â âMy name is Tadashi Yamaguchi. Would you like to ask the first question?â âYou can go if youâd like.â He nods before stopping to think about what question to ask. âUhm, whatâs your favorite color?â He tosses the ball and I catch it. âPink! And yours?â I toss the ball back. âGreen. Favorite food?â
We fall into an easy rhythm. Despite him being Stupidshimaâs best friend or something, heâs so nice! I catch the ball again, breaking my chain of thought. âHow come youâre friends with Tsukishima when youâre so sweet?â I toss the ball back to him, and he laughs a little nervously. Maybe too early of a question. I mean, weâre not really friends yet. âHeâs cool when you get to know him. How come you hate him?â He tosses the ball and I nearly fumble it. âHe was so standoffish! It was crazy. Anyways, do you play any sports?â âYeah, volleyball. But, itâs just for fun. Do you play sports?â âI mainly do cheerleading, but my family has a tennis set, and my aunt teaches me dances.â
After the game, the gym coach calls us all to do jogs around the gym in a circle. I jog next to Aika and 2 other girls Iâve been talking to. âDo you guys think if I add something more to my uniform Iâll get dress coded?â I look around the little group surrounding me. âI mean, what would you add?â One of the new girls, Kimura, asks. She has long blonde hair and freshly done nails. I wonder if she does them herself. âNot a lot, just some lace rimming my skirt. Maybe faux fur if I go to the craft store. Or if I thrift flip something with fur.â âIâm sure no one will say anything, probably,â the other new girl, Mizuno, says. Mizuno has a brown bob and little diamond earrings. âAika, what do you think?â âI think we should turn it into a craft day. We tell the twins and everyone here is invited. Could we have it this Sunday?â âYes! WaitâŠbut it canât be at my place. Kenjiâs friends will be over.â âWe could have it at my place.â Aika says, seeing if everyone else agrees. âYeah, sounds good,â Mizuno and Kimura both agree.
After Gym Class
I lean back in my seat and tap my pencil lightly against my desk. Our literature teacher is going over the curriculum for the year. âIn the second quarter we will be doing an argumentative unit. During that unit you will be partnered up with another student for the whole quarterâŠâ I hope I donât get partnered up with Stingeyshima. âAnd you two will work together as a lawyer pair, kind of, to argue a side of a topic.â That sounds cool. With how argumentative I can be, Iâd do so good! After her talk, she passes out a passage for us to read with questions at the end. I notice Yamaguchi get up and ask Tsukishima something, then he turns my way. âHey, (Y/ln), do you have a pencil I could borrow?â Iâm already digging through my pencil before heâs finished. âOf course I do. Here.â He thanks me and I go back to my classwork. I notice Tsukishima giving me a weird look out of the corner of his eye. Internally Iâm smiling, but I wonât show anything, yet.
After school and volleyball practice
âMiori, Miruka,â Aika calls out to the twins, who actually were being nice to each other. Miori had gotten out of a difficult practice, so Miruka was fanning her. They both perk up at Aikaâs call. âYes?â âOn Sunday weâre having a craft day at my house with Kimura and Mizuno.â They both light up with excitement. âThose are the girls we talked to yesterday, right?â Miruka asks, helping Miori up. âYeah, the ones with long blonde hair and a brown bob,â I say, passing snacks to everyone. âWait! I need to give something to Kageyama!â Miori rushes off, but not before turning her phone flashlight on. âWait!â We all run after her. We nearly collide right into her since she stopped so abruptly. âWhat is it?â âLook!â
In front of us, Tsukishima, Yamaguchi, and two other boys seem to be arguing. A boy with black hair has Tsukishima by the shirt collar. Miruka guides us to hide behind a building. Yamaguchi has his eyes wide and his hands up, as if heâs panicking and doesnât know what to do. The orange head boy is cheering on the black haired boy. Just as I think something is going to happen, the black haired boy leaves. Tsukishima and Yamaguchi head off in the other direction. Miori breaks out of our hiding spot to go after the black and orange duo.
âKageyama! I have that thing from class.â The black haired boy, Kageyama, turns to face her. We all follow behind her soon after. âThat guy is a total jerk!â âYeah, tell me about it!â The short boy pipes up. Miori immediately turns to me when she sees me. âHey, (Y/n), is your seat mateâs name Tsukishima?â âYes-â âSuch a poopyhead!â The orange head boy cuts in. âRest in peace Kageyama andâŠâ âHinata.â âAnd Hinata. Thatâs your new teammate.â Orange hair is Hinata, black hair is Kageyama. We all talk until I get a buzz in my pocket. Thatâs probably my mom or dad asking where I am. âShould we head out?â I ask lightly, looking around the group. âYeah, bye Kageyama and Hinata!â We wave bye to the boys and walk back home. The rest of the way back we talk about stupid things. We try to keep our giggles down to not disturb everyone. It is night, after all.
I get home eventually, and dinner is being served. âHey.â I slip off my shoes and place my bag on a hanger. âWhy are you so late? Were you going to tell anyone?â My mom sounds extra stern. âMom, I had already told you guys that Iâd be out extra late with my friends. We were at Mioriâs volleyball practice.â I pull my hair back and wash my hands. âWhen?â Sheâs leaning against the counter now. âMom-â âIt was on the fridge. She wrote it down on the calendar on the fridge.â I look over at Kenji, eyebrows raised and mouth slightly open. My dad looks over at the fridge, lo and behold, in scribbly writing, it says âIâll be at volleyball practice with my friends - (Y/n)â. âSheâs right, theyâre both right,â my dad says, trying to calm my mom. I sit down, waiting for words that never come. âIâm sorry, next time just remind us.â
Dinner goes by quietly. No matter how much Kenji talks, there is a slight tension. Of course when I mess up, itâs a big problem. Iâll have to get Kenji snacks for 2 weeks for covering me. We put up our dishes after dinner. I go ahead and wash them before my mom can lash out on me anymore. I slip an extra snack from my bag under his door. I hear a small gasp and thanks while I head to the bathroom. As I wash my face, I think of Yamaguchi. Iâll have to talk to him more. Weâll definitely be friends. Afterwards, I sink into my sheets with volume 1 of Nana and soft music playing in the background. Hmm, that guy looks like a punk TsukishimaâŠwhat the hell?

What happens when two seemingly polar opposites are put right beside each other in class? Reader is a talkative girl with a smart mouth. Despite her quick words, she loves romance. Tsukishima isâŠ.himself. When theyâre assigned seats next to each other, will they get along?
Y/nâs POV
âCleaning on the first day? This sucks!â Miori dips her mop in the bucket filled with hazy, soapy water. âYeah, well at least we get to clean together. In middle school we never got this privilege. At least not on the first day,â Aika calmly says as she wipes off desks. âMiori, why are you getting the mop out already? (Y/n) hasnât even swept yet!â I hear Miruka scold Miori, who pouts slightly before turning to me. âHey! Why havenât you swept yet! Youâre taking so loooong, and I have places to be after this.â âItâs nothing, Iâm just more tired today,â not a complete lie. I never said why I was tired, but I am. âIs it because of that boy who annoyed you earlier?â
Maybe Aika is the more direct one. She barely even looks up from wiping desks while saying that. âA boy? Iâll beat him! Whatâs his name? What does he look like?!â I smile slightly at Mioriâs threats. âJust a nobody. He took the nerd stereotype too seriously, smug glasses-wearing asshole.â I can feel my jaw clench a little, but it doesnât matter. My phone buzzes, âHey sweetie, can you pick up Kenji from school?â Of course itâs from mom. I grab my broom and sweep hurriedly. I finally finish sweeping and rush to put up my supplies.
âWeâre going to talk later over call, right?â I ask while gathering my bags. âI have volleyball practice after school, so itâll have to be later.â All heads snap to Miori. âSince when did you do volleyball?â âSince I found out Ukai is the coach!â She squeals excitedly, jumping with the mop. âWhen I got back from lunch we still had some time, so I started talking to this boy in my class with black hair and a constant scowl. I recognized him from a local newspaper talking about the âGreat Kingâ, so thatâs what I shouted. I was like, âTHE GREAT KING!â He immediately looked and frowned saying, âdonât call me that.â We started talking and he said he only came here because he didnât pass Shiratorizawaâs exams, and Ukai is going to be the coach!â âWhat if itâs just for boyâs volleyball?â That shut her up quickly. I left afterwards, remembering Kenji.
Once I got to his school, I found him surrounded by friends. I guess we really are related. âKenji come on! I donât have all day,â I say, crossing my arms impatiently. Middle schoolers areâŠinteresting, to say the least. I heard what his friends say from him, and I donât want to experience it in person. He bounces over to me after saying bye to his friends. â(Y/n), can we go to the convenience store?â âWhatâs with you and constantly asking for things?â He does a spin while walking before talking again. âCome on, I know you have some money from your part time job. Please?â He blinks up at me with round eyes and a pout. Suddenly, weâre both at Sakanoshita and heâs browsing through the snack aisle. Spoiled brat.
âNo but I need all of this and 3 meat buns too.â He gestures to his already full basket. When did that happen? âIâm a growing boy. Besides, I play 2 sports, so I need the food.â âYeah? Are you any good at either of them?â âThatâs a low blow! Besides, if I eat the food Iâll get better!â Heâs so determined and stubborn. I donât know if thatâs honorable or not. âYou chose both sports. I told you that soccer and volleyball were too much.â Iâm not going to buy all of this for him. And thatâs final!
We leave the store with all of his snacks, 5 meat buns, and a pack of mochis. Heâs smiling widely and swinging the bags happily. âDonât look so smug. Youâre paying me back.â âI donât have money.â âHmm, then I guess youâll have to do my chores.â He frowns and doesnât swing the bag as high. Knowing him, he wonât do my chores. Our parents wouldnât allow for that, no matter what. âHey, (Y/n)?â I glance over at him, âWhatâs up?â âYou need to get a boyfriend.â
I stop dead in my tracks and stare at him. He stares back, unashamed. âWhat the hell is your problem?â He pulls out a notebook from his bag and points to it. âThis is my big book of reasons my sister needs a boyfriend. Number 1, you want one. Why else would you buy so much shojo-?â âSHUT UP!â âNumber 2, I need a cool mentor to look up to. I mean, youâre alright, but I need another boy so I donât have to talk to you about personal things.â âYouâre nasty.â âNumber 3, you wonât bother me as much because you can talk to your boyfriend.â I scoff and walk away as he continues to list reasons. âHey! Wait up!â He scrambles to catch up, not like I went far, though. âItâs not as easy as you think to just get a boyfriend,â I sigh, my mind going back to one of my wishes for this school year. Suddenly, that jerk from earlier pops up and I scowl. Idiot. Why would I think of him, anyways? âDonât worry sister, your little brother will teach you the ways.â âShut up.â
Once weâre home, he gets straight to practice. I change into casual clothes and go out to watch him, eating one of my snacks. âDid you not sign up yet?â I ask, noting how happy he looks to play volleyball. He catches it briefly. âYou said it yourself, Iâm not any good.â He goes back to dribbling the ball, but thereâs a bit of tension now. I catch the ball when it flies over towards my head and walk over to him. I try to pass the ball the way he did earlier, but it went backwards somehow. He laughs and runs to get the ball. âNo, no, no, like this.â He demonstrates the pose and I copy it to the best of my abilities. We pass back and forth, laughing the whole time. Itâs rare we interact, but this is nice. At least, until our parents get home.
Tsukishimaâs POV
I sigh as I click the front door shut. Today was so much, and just for the first day? I take off my shoes and leave them at the entrance before stalking to my room. There, I change into house clothes. Ever since that idiot girl spoke earlier, Iâve been off. Who the hell does she think she is? I donât let it linger, though. I slip on my headphones and grab a book from my shelf. I settle onto bed with music blasting in my ears. This is what I love. Mom doesnât get home until later, so I can be alone for the first time in forever.
Bzzt! I glance up from my book as my phone vibrates. Pausing my music, I look over to see who it was. âAkiteruâ, is all that appears on screen. I roll my eyes and put my phone on silent. Iâll reply later, maybe. I try to go on with my book, but I canât. At that point, I lay down on my bed, just listening to music. Iâll probably text Yamaguchi later, but who knows? I can feel my eyes getting heavy, but itâs not even that late. I let my eyes shut, and soon enough Iâm sleeping.
When I wake up, itâs to the sound of my mom knocking on my door. âKei? Dinnerâs ready!â âIâm coming,â I mumble out, pushing myself up from bed. I adjust my glasses and walk out of my room. Dinner is already set out, but Iâm not too hungry. I eat a little as my mom asks me about my day. I give generic answers, since nothing really happened. She narrows her eyes before asking another question. âDid you meet anyone new? Maybe a girl?â I stir the rice on my plate before answering. âThereâs an annoying popular girl in my class.â I donât elaborate much more on that. âWas she pretty?â âMom.â âIâm teasing!â She smiles and I canât help but smile slightly too. Ugh, her and Akiteru are contagious.
After dinner, I clean my plate off and place it on the drying rack. I turn to head to my room, but my mom stops me. âKei, did your brother reach out to you?â I turn to face her. â..Yes, he did.â âYou need to at least respond back. I know him moving is different for you, and itâs definitely different for him. Besides, he just wants to talk to you.â I sigh before nodding. âOkay, mom. Iâll text back.â She hums happily, so I take that as my sign to go to my room. I close the door behind me and walk over to my phone.
Akiteru
Hey! How was the first day of school?
Fine.
Afterwards, I toss my phone aside and go over to my desk. I pick up a book to study. I was the topper back at my old school, so I guess I can keep up that record. As I highlight and write, I can feel time drifting away. Itâs almost therapeutic, at least by myself. Maybe Iâll go to the library next time. I yawn and glance at the time before putting everything away. I need to sleep, so I brush my teeth and get into my bed after. Before long, Iâm drifting offâŠ
(Y/n)âs POV
After dinner, I decide to head back to my room. My parents are talking to Kenji, so itâs nothing new Iâll be hearing. Besides, we already had fun together before our parents came home. I pick up my phone and send a text to the group chat.
The Divas
Can you guys call????
Pookie Aika
Yes
Idiot 1
Yeah Iâm out of volleyball practice
Idiot 2
Ya
I call everyone for a joined FaceTime call. Aika and Miruka answer, but Miori just peeps in from Mirukaâs phone. âHow was volleyball practice?â I ask lightly. A loud wail from off camera comes from Miori as Miruka tries to scoot away. Miori snatches the phone from her to talk. âIt was horrible! There were like, no 1st years, so I felt like a baby around all the mature, pretty 3rd years! AND ALSO! UKAI ISNâT THE COACH!â More wails can be heard from her as Miruka grabs her phone back. We talk for hours until my bedtime alarm goes off. âOh, good night (Y/n)!â Aika says with a soft smile. âGood night.â âGood night!!!â âGood night everyone!â I leave the call and charge my phone. I go to the bathroom to do my nightly routine. Once Iâm done, I journal, just talking about my day. That dummy is what I mainly write about. Ugh, I hope he trips on his long ass legs or something. I pull on my sleep mask as the night pulls me into a gentle slumber.
Hello! This chapter was lowkey fillerâŠbut I really wanted an excuse to finally do the smau part and expand more on Kenji. Updates from now on will be more frequent throughout the week until school starts up again. Thank you for reading!

What happens when two seemingly polar opposites are put right beside each other in class? Reader is a talkative girl with a smart mouth. Despite her quick words, she loves romance. Tsukishima isâŠ.himself. When theyâre assigned seats next to each other, will they get along?
Tsukishimaâs POV:
âBeep-!â I donât waste much time turning off my alarm clock. Afterwards, I reach for my glasses and sit up, adjusting them on my face. I lazily switch on the lamp by my bedside next. My eyes squint at the change of lighting in the room. A yawn escapes my mouth as I stand up from my bed to go to the bathroom. Itâs the first day of high school, but it doesnât feel different, anyways.
The house is a lot quieter since Akiteru left for university. If he were still here, heâd probably be in the bathroom right now, too. Humming something while he brushes his teeth, too happy to be going to school. Then again, I guess thatâs just how he normally is. I spit in the sink and look up at my reflection. Heâd probably say something about how tall I am now, too. Not like it matters, though. Heâs in college, and Iâm here. I wash my face and leave the bathroom when Iâm done.
When I walk into the kitchen, mom is making breakfast. Nothing too big, but something light enough. She turns around and smiles when she sees me. âGood morning Kei! Howâd you sleep?â I nod in response to her greeting before speaking, âRegularly. Nothing new.â âAre you excited for your first day of high school?â âWell, itâs not like much will change. Iâll talk to Yamaguchi, and maybe sign up for the volleyball club.â I sit down at the table, still in pajamas. Iâll change after breakfast.
My mom talks about everything, and I nod along to her. Sometimes Iâll give a small smile at something that interests me. âIs Yamaguchi coming to our house to meet up, or are you two meeting somewhere else?â I walk over to the sink with my empty plate before responding, âWeâre meeting some place else, that way he doesnât have to walk so much.â I wash the dish and place it on the drying rack to make it easier for my mom. âI can drop you off so you donât have to walk that far. Weâd have to leave now, though, so I can make it to work on time.â My mom is slipping on her shoes, already dressed for work. It reminds me that I still need to get dressed. âDonât worry about it. Iâm not dressed yet. Youâd be late to work if you tried to drop me off.â She hums slightly before checking the time. âWell, I hope you have a great day at school, Kei. I do have to get going though. Bye, be safe, and I love you!â I mumble an âI love you tooâ as she rushes out the door. She has a work meeting for today, so she needs to be there earlier.
I stumble into my room to finally get dressed. Afterwards, I get a text from Yamaguchi, asking if Iâm on the way. I pick up my phone and text back quickly, âyeah, Iâm on the wayâ. I pick up my bag and headphones then actually leave the house. I slip my headphones on to listen to my music as I walk. Itâs nice, being surrounded by sounds I enjoy. It doesnât require much effort to listen to music. I continue like that for a while before seeing Yamaguchi. I donât take them off until weâre closer, just to listen to the rest of the song currently playing. âTsukki!â I see Yamaguchi wave excitedly. I take my headphones out and let them rest on my neck. âHey,â we fall into step soon after. He talks about his summer break and asks about mine, as if we didnât spend the majority of it together. âWe helped my brother pack and prepare for college,â I say, not wanting to make a big deal of it. He talks some more after that, thankfully not asking more about it.
Not too long after, we make it to Karasuno. âCan you believe weâll be here for the next 3 years?â He asks, looking at me excitedly. I glance over at him and shrug a little. âI mean, itâs just a public school. Itâs not like anything super crazy will happen.â He laughs and doesnât really listen. Instead, he waits for me before walking again. Once we make it inside, we look at our class assignments. âWeâre both in class 1-4,â I say as I begin to walk to said room.
Once we enter, Iâm immediately assaulted with the sound of loud voices. In the middle of it seems to be a girl. Sheâs talking with her hands in a big manner. She glances over at me and thinks I donât see. My seat is beside hers, so I walk that way, and she turns her gaze back to her friends. I sit down in my seat and wave Yamaguchi over. He had gone over to his seat originally, but the teacher isnât here yet, so we have time. My seat mate is still talking so much and so loud. Does she seriously know all these people? Sure sheâs pretty, but sheâs so annoying. The teacher comes in, so everyone has to go to their assigned seats.
Lunch time
Itâs finally lunch time, and Iâm glad to talk to Yamaguchi again. Although, Iâd never say it to his face. I glance up to see about 4 more people come in as others leave. They head straight to the girl beside me. Genuinely, how can she talk to and know so many people? Whatever, sheâs probably just another popular girl. I talk to Yamaguchi during lunch while eating. Suddenly, this girl laughs so loud she ends up knocking her water bottle over. It rolls by my feet, and I try so hard to control my facial expressions. Yamaguchi picks it up easily and she smiles, thanking him multiple times. I canât help but side eye her. Of course, Yamaguchi notices.
âHow come you didnât help her?â He asks slyly. As if he doesnât know. âYou were already down there. Besides, I donât know her.â Itâs not a lie. He was helping and I donât know her. I didnât add that I wouldnât want to help her, but does that really matter? He laughs slightly and continues the conversation as normal. All things come to an end when lunch ends, though. All of her friends leave the classroom or go back to their original seat. Everything is fine until the teacher starts talking.
âGood afternoon class! Iâm sure you all are still a little hyper from lunch, so weâll do a partner activity to start class. Turn to the person beside you to work on the warm-up question.â I let out a long sigh as she immediately turned over to me with a wide smile, introducing herself. Iâll probably have to answer the question myself. I glance over to say my name, âTsukishima.â Out of the corner of my eye, I can see her happy facade fade. As I write down the answer, she keeps trying to talk to me. Is that all she can do? Clearly, I donât need her help, and Iâm not going to just let her copy my answer. Group assignment or not. âDo you have a problem with me?â
Who does this girl think she is? I turn to face her, and her eyebrows raise slightly. She seems surprised that I actually looked over. I scoff a little before answering, âI donât have a problem with you.â Thatâs a lie. She doesnât look pleased with that answer, but I donât look at her long enough to care. Instead, I redirect my attention to my paper, rereading what I wrote down. âSo you were just born with that stuck up your ass?â
I freeze for a moment, and I can see her do the same out of the corner of my eye. Whatâs with her, genuinely? I turn with a tight, close lipped smile. âIâd say you canât talk, but you talk so much you might die without talking.â I think thatâll end whatever that was. But then, âOh, well you must love the sound of your own voice cause all youâre saying is bull-â âAlright class, are we ready to share our answers?â Her scowl is so pronounced, and she scrunches up her fist so hard I think her hand might stay like that. The girl in front of her must be closer friends with her than some of the others she was surrounded with earlier. She checks up onâŠ.(y/l/n) (?) like itâs second nature. I can feel Yamaguchi looking at me, but Iâll talk to him later, anyways.
After school
Weâre finally out of school. I see Yamaguchi approach me with 2 flyers in his hand. âHey! I got you a volleyball flyer.â He hands it to me and I tuck it in my bag pocket. We both start to walk back home. He talks about the things that happened today, and I just nod. That annoying girl is on my mind. Who says that to a person they just met? The audacity of this wannabe- âTsukki!â I turn over to see an exasperated Yamaguchi. âHave you been listening?â â..yeah, I have.â âThen how do you feel about her?â ââŠour teacher?â He shakes his head with a slight smirk on his face. âNo, your seat mate.â My face scrunches up in annoyance. âOh, her. Well, sheâs just an overgrown canary. Nothing special about her, anyways.â I donât bother hiding the scowl growing on my face. âWell, maybe she is talkative, but she seems sweet.â I snap my head to Yamaguchi. âSweet? Sheâs just like any other popular girl. Sheâs nice to your face and a total asshole the next moment.â Yamaguchi clearly doesnât agree with me, but I donât care right now. What the hell is her problem?
