like the betrayal’s always going to be worse if they cared about you and it didn’t matter. someone discards you because they didn’t give a shit, then you can be angry about that, you can feel vindicated in that, you can get over it. but if they can look you in the eyes and say “I love you. I would make the same choice again.” You will never sleep peacefully again, is all.
“I thought they cared about me, but they were lying this whole time.” <- tired. boring. removes all the nuance of this relationship to make it easier to move on from.

hundreds of years ago, the gods lolth and bhaal made a pact. bhaal would provide lolth with what she needed in order to make bhaalspawn, hidden amongst her drow, to use as she saw fit, with the promise that one day bhaal would ask for those children back and lolth would give them freely. but lolth did not, would not.
zarae was one such child, a bhaalspawn gifted to house faen tlabbar for their obedience and devotion. she was raised as a servant of lolth, taught to restrain her violent urges and use them only in lolth's service.
once, zarae submitted to the call for violence that screamed in the back of her mind. in response, the matron mother took on a voice that was not her own and lifted up her dagger, scrag-tooth. lolth had possessed her, claimed zarae's right eye, and replaced it with that of a spider's, which allowed the goddess an extra means of control over her gift from bhaal.
zarae became lolth's shadow, an assassin sent during and after the drow civil war to do away with those who opposed the spider-goddess. eventually, she was sent to the surface, to hunt down those who had attempted to escape.
at long last, bhaal's long-lost daughter was near enough that he could grasp at her again. she managed to claim the lives of five heretics before bhaal's grip tightened.
she found herself in baldur's gate, given freedom and even encouragement to express her violent desires, and bhaal celebrated this by making her his chosen.
lolth, whose grip on zarae had never loosened, equally encouraged zarae to go along with bhaal's plan, to spy on bhaal and spoil his plots when the time came.
until orin killed her sister for usurping her, and when zarae next awoke on the nautiloid, neither lolth nor bhaal could reach her.

dear genius people who live in my phone, is there a name for the style of wearing lipstick only in the middle of the lips (e.g. not reaching all the way to the corners of the mouth)? in my mind it feels very rococo but i believe similar styles also trended during certain periods of chinese history?
