it was a lie. so much he spoke was a lie, but to lie to her felt almost sacrilegious. she was the strongest person he’d ever met, and his love was for her, so much of his love was for her. soft mouth. soft skin. even softer, rosy hair — and those impossibly beautiful, wide eyes that looked at him as if he were something more than what he was. not her murderer, or the very thing that would damn her if she didn’t get away from him. how did he even begin to tell her that? she made him want to forget that his weakness possessed the very power to destroy her, to let himself pretend that maybe he could kiss her, and everything would be okay. but she wasn’t his true love. jacks had met his true love, and screwed it all up.

jacks knew what he had to do, and still, he could not get himself to move away. to not touch her, not memorize every inch of her with his careful gaze while daming himself for it. he wanted to forget her, the way she would forget him once this was over. ❝ i’m not your happily ever after, little fox. i’m nothing but the villain in your perfect fairytale. ❞
