one of my favourite things about "first time" is how, in the first verse, after he sings "awful sound" and "uneasy ally" there are these confused warped violin sounds in the background to reflect the lyrics. such a beautiful little detail, i adore this song so much :')

"i wouldn't be seen walking through any door some place you're not welcome to" is so interesting to me because dante was physically unable to go anywhere virgil wasn't permitted to. it walks the line of love and codependency, and what happens when you lose yourself to devotion. "i do not do this for myself; i'd walk through hell on living feet for you" essentially saying i've gone too far and ended up somewhere i'm not meant to be just through the act of following, the same way dante simply followed virgil through the gates of hell because he seemed like a beacon but ended up in a darkness he couldn't even comprehend. HOZIER !!! YOU GENIUS !!!

I just love how Nobody's Soldier is a direct slap to those who walked out during Hozier's concert while he called for a cease-fire. And all those who claim he's too political. Choke on it with all due respect. ^⁠_⁠^
