The shoulder that nudged into hers was not from a peer too distracted to be aware of who was around them; granted that did happen a lot in the crowded shop. No, her cousin Trent’s all too excited demeanor is what brought about the contact and she was about ready to shove her small fist against his arm if he didn’t stop. Her aunt, however, grabbed her hand and tugged her away, sensing the tension.
“Let’s get you that telescope dear. It’s a shame you can’t use the one we have at home.” While they weren’t struggling with money, Faye didn’t want to put such a burden on people whom already took her in years ago with no questions. The death of her parents still stung but it wasn’t all too encompassing that she wasn’t excited to be going to Hogwarts.
“A magical telescope is what’s required, Auntie.” Faye’s small stature must have been an amusing sight with the know-it-all tone she held as she informed her aunt. “It has a set of charms that protect the lens. No breaks or scratches. It also has a sort of…auto focus charm.”
“I wish we had that on our one at home,” Her aunt muttered.
“Trent is a bull.” There was no disagreement or agreement from her aunt as both women searched the shelves for the correct model of telescope. As one of the shop workers appeared, Faye listened as he pointed out the model she needed for Astrology class.
“Keep in mind that you cannot look directly at the Sun or any solar eclipses. It may be magical but not when looking at those astronomical matter.” He was just about to pass the box to her uncle when he paused, “I nearly forgot! The most important thing to remember is to not look at a full moon.”
“Why’s that?” Aunt Vera spoke up before Faye could.
“Well, the full Moon holds great magical energy. If the light gets directly into the telescope it will break the magical properties of it as well as the lenses themselves! Nasty business, that.”
Before Faye could ask any more questions, a crash was heard from across the room. Faye breathed out slowly, praying to whomever would listen that it wasn’t—
“My bad!” Trent shout out from an area near the crash.
“When I found out I was pregnant, I had this overwhelming piece run through my body. It felt like the right time, and I’m so excited to become a mother, because I have such a great mother. If my daughter is half the woman that she is, I’ll be okay and she’ll be okay. So I’m just excited to raise this kid in this crazy life with my husband and see life in a new way.“ - Odette Annable for WhoWhatWear (x)
jennyspring:
"Fair enough. Enjoy yourself, babe." Jack, personally, didn’t care how gross Faye thought she was. Her post-travel sleepy haze was enough for him to want her body pressed against his. But he also knew better than to argue, and instead took up the spot vacated by Faye. His eyes closed as his muscles eased from the workout he’d been into just half an hour ago. His eyes didn’t open again until Faye’s lips met his and he raised his upper body to meet hers, left hand reaching to brush back her wet hair from her face. “That shirt looks really good on you, but have you considered taking it off?” His other hand moved to her upper thigh, spreading his fingertips to encompass her hipbone.
She felt herself settling into the space and the previous stress from the day was melting away. Faye took advantage of his touch to move closer towards him, her knees hitting the edge of the bed. She let out a hum in thought before pressing her forehead against his as her hands went to his shoulders. "You're welcome to help out with that." Deciding she wanted to be even closer, Faye moved forward and straddled his lap. Her lips pressed forward against his as she settled herself as close to him as she possibly could. Her body was cooled down and every piece of tension from before was melting away the longer she was with him.
"Yeah, whatever. I hope she’s secretly studying you to write her doctorate." Jack laughed, wished her good luck before turning on the stereo and heading into the bathroom. The cool water felt like a blessing, causing Jack to just soak for a few seconds before he went to work scrubbing off grass stains in various spots on his person. Emerging to the soft sounds of whatever had come up on Pandora Radio, he was pleased to find Faye already sprawled across his bed. Wrapping his towel around his waist, Jack made his way to the dresser before speaking. “If you’re still on a cool down from your walk, you can hop in the shower, too. I certainly wouldn’t mind.” The benign innocence of the expression he wore now was one that required a great deal of practice. He slipped on a pair of boxers before sitting down next to her on the bed. “Or if you’re not feeling that I’ll wait to hug you til you’re ready for physical contact. Totally patient.” He settled back, using his hands to hold himself upright while staring down at her.
Her body wanted nothing more than to stay in that still comfortable position forever. Or at least as long as the heat wave lasted. She had vaguely heard him enter the room but she was lazy at opening her eyes to watch him. When she did, however, she wasn't disappointed. Her eyes followed him around as her head tilted towards him for a better view. There was too much fuzz in her mind to really process anything but she did feel a need to get rid of her the stickiness that felt more like a second skin.
"I'm currently gross and you're clean. So shower first then a proper greeting." With a sudden energy inside her, Faye quickly made her way into the bathroom and barely waited for the water to reach a temperature between warm and cold before stepping into it. She only bothered to wash her skin which resulted in her entering the bedroom in just a towel only a few minutes later. Redressing in only a pair of underwear she kept there and one of his shirts, she leaned over and greeted him properly.
"Don’t take that dweeb’s money. I’ll take two more jobs to support you financially before I consider letting someone else buy off my honey." Jack fought to keep the spike of irritation out of his tone. He remembered vaguely seeing the Sebastian in question across the quad just a few weeks ago. He focused on pulling his shirt over his head and tossing it into the hamper. "Sorry you hurt Kara’s feelings with your angry words. That girl’s gonna have a break down or move out on you. I can’t tell which." He leaned against the doorframe, grinning broadly again. She was definitely going to regret not bringing her homework when she was reintroduced to a temperate climate. No distractions on a Friday afternoon was sounding better by the second, though. “No one else fills that position like me and you know it. Your arm candy boyfriend is still very much intact. Just sweaty. I’m gonna jump in the shower, but I’m also gonna leave the kitchen door unlocked if you’re headed over.”
"And that is exactly what I wanted to hear." Her tone turned more lighthearted, though her own irritation at her classmate was still present. He'd at least backed off after Jack picked her up after class a few weeks ago. Though his remarks on what she should be doing with her life was still being spouted and she wished she could just deck him. Her perfect record forced her to behave herself though. "She won't move out. I help her study. In the end I make up for it."
"Alright, go shower and smell nice for me and I'll head out shortly." She glanced around for her shoes as she said goodbye and hung up.
Arriving at his apartment ten minutes later, Faye nearly let out a sound of relief at seeing his door. Even in the shorts and tank top, hair up, she still felt sticky. The burst of cool air within the apartment made her sigh in pure happiness. She leaned back against the counter for a moment to take a rest before dealing with the stairs up to Jack's room. When she finally was ready, she lazily walked upstairs and entered the bedroom. She went right for his bed and landed on her back. The cool fabric made her refuse to move away from it anytime soon as she closed her eyes and tried to cool off.
Jack smiled and rolled his eyes at her crankiness. No homework was just fine with him, despite guessing being in the cool long enough would snap Faye back into her usual no-nonsense demeanor. “Yeah, I’ll do that when I have three hundred bucks to waste on a radiator. Or a couple grand to shop for a new car entirely. Till then it’s windows down, head out the window at all stops. Sorry you’re dating a scrub. Could Kara drive you? Her car’s brand new.” Climbing to his feet and picking up his backpack, Jack padded out of the kitchen and towards the stairs and his room which waited at the top. “I’m not going to lie,” Jack began diplomatically. “I wasn’t totally trying to melt the kitchen floor again but I did transfer alot of sweat onto it in my inadvertent attempt.” He moved to close his blinds and then his curtains, already preparing to cool the place for Faye’s arrival.
Faye cursed under her breath as she simultaneously listened to Jack and tripped over one of Kara's shoes. She kicked the footwear and felt slightly better about her day after doing so. Though a smirk couldn't be held at her next words. "One day Sebastian Sheffield is going to hand me an envelope with a lot of money it in while in the middle of our accounting class and I'm going to end up taking it."
"Kara is indisposed at the moment. She got on my nerves." A hand ran along the back of her neck and she cringed at the droplets of sweat her fingers had caught. "If you end up melting into the floor I won't have an arm candy boyfriend and then I will be forced to find another to fit into my ten year plan for success."
"Baby, you know you can come over any time you’d like." Jack rolled from his stomach to his back, wincing as the sweat-soaked t-shirt he was wearing peeled from the tile. The grin on his face was pretty genuine, though, knowing from the edge in Faye’s voice that his usual ‘aren’t you always?’ would fall on extremely unsympathetic ears. "We can black out my bedroom then watch Netflix. And you can bring your homework with you or something." Tilting his head to account for the sounds Ross was making in the next room, Jack finally sat up. “It’s a cool 65 at my place, and if I’m not mistaken Ross is gearing up for a business trip. Won’t be home for a couple hours at least.” His tone was low and pleasant as he rubbed his free hand against the back of his head.”I’d offer to drive you but no one deserves to be trapped in a black Volvo with no air conditioning. I love you more than that. Need to shower first, though. And maybe mop the kitchen floor.”
She let out a whine at the sound of a temperature other than center of hell. The heat only made her more and more childish by the minute and she realized that going to his place meant enduring going outside. "If I have to look at anymore numbers I will probably only get more bitchier. No homework." She stood up and focused on putting actual clothing on.
"I am going to find clothing that doesn't make me feel like I will pass out from heat and then I will walk over. My car is in the shop, which is where yours should be since you have no A/C." She processed fully what he had said. "Wait? Did you try to melt into the kitchen floor again?"
"Good fuckin’ God," Jack panted as he finally barreled into the air-conditioned coolness of the apartment he shared with Ross. For a moment he allowed himself to spread across the cool ceramic tiles of the kitchen floor and wondered if he could actually melt from the heat. The scientist in him knew it wasn’t going to happen— but still remained somewhat intrigued by the possibility. His roommate moved past Jack’s prone, sweaty form with ease, opening the fridge and removing the orange juice without hitting Jack. “Are you discovering quidditch not your sport?” Jack lifted his head to squint up at Ross. “It would be, if the temperatures weren’t soaring into the mid-nineties and my teammates weren’t constantly forgetting to bring water. Oh, and having a car with working A/C couldn’t hurt either.” He flopped back down onto the tile, wishing that he couldn’t hear the faint buzzing that emerged from his backpack. With one limp hand he dug the phone free. Managing a grin as he recognized the number, he put it on speaker as close to his mouth as he could. "You’ve reached Nerd-Sex Hotline, what’s your Freudian Fantasy?"
The pure lack of air ventilation in her dorm had only made Faye more irritable than her usual self. In fact, Faye hadn't even bothered to show up to her afternoon class. Trying to pull herself from bed while her A/C was broken was nearly impossible. Besides she knew she would be able to make up for the missed lesson.
Her roommate on the other hand was determined to fill her ears with things she didn't care about at all. Why she even bothered to try and listen the business major had yet to fully process and she partially blamed the heat for it. "Kara, I do not care about your boyfriend of the week. Shut the hell up." Her voice rose as she spoke and she didn't bother to sit up when her roommate had stormed out of the room. Happy with the quiet, she tilted her head to look at the time. Satisfied that he wouldn't be at practice she sighed deeply before sitting up. Regardless that she was in as few layers as possible there was still a trace of sweat on her.
There was barely a wait before he had answered the phone. She scoffed at his greeting but flopped back down on her bed. "I'm hot. And before you make some snarky remark I have no air conditioning and I am not above hurting you if you don't let me come over."
Summer Birthday Surprises
Faye had been feeling more than her usual about Jack that day. Her evening had been perfect in her opinion—which was a large compliment since she hardly ever used the word. Ever. More and more of her rare vocabulary was used when Jack was involved. The sounds around them were minimal and she could feel herself slowly falling into a state just before sleep. However, sleep was the last thing she wanted to do. It meant missing time with him and she wasn’t ready to give that up yet. Letting him run his fingers against her back, knowing that it was words instead of images this time he was drawing. Her mind was far too into bliss to really figure out what they were. Staying in that moment was all it could focus on.
Leaning only her head up, Faye’s lips pressed against his neck. A smile was stuck on her face, albeit a small one in their current situation. Her hand slide up his arm to his shoulder slowly and softly. Leaning up on her other, her lips trailed to own. Instead of the hurried and rushed kiss her body wanted to give, her lips were slow and passionate. It made even her own heart beat a little faster. As his arms wrapped around her, Faye moved to straddle him, using her grip on the back of his neck to pull him into a sitting position. Being pressed against him, Faye could feel the words she unknowingly began to associate with Jack appear in the back of her mind. They travelled to every part of her body, reaching the end of her toes to travel back up again. It felt like her feelings were going to burst forth from her lips but they were too distracted from being pressed against his.
Jack meant more to her than she could express verbally so she let her actions speak for her. His grip on her tightened as their kissing continued. The time apart had only strengthened the way she felt about him and his surprise visit today—particularly on her birthday—had enticed her to want more.
Summer 2016 Self Para
Her day had been minimally exciting in her definition of the word. Faye strode into her house, bags on each of her arms as she brought in the food shopping her aunt had asked her to do. She had only been gone a little over an hour and upon returning, her and her aunt began the process of putting away the groceries. A ring at the bell led for Faye to open the door and immediately want to shut it once more. Gripping the frame she glared at the two adults standing before her. They looked slightly uncomfortable standing out in the open and a snide remark on how they preferred to lurk in the shadows appeared in her mind.
“Faye, love, who is it?” Her aunt approached through the hallway and paused in her step. Crossing her arms over her chest, the woman wasn’t willing to show any kindness to her sister and brother in law. “What do you want?” The business like tone didn’t deter the Tennisons from entering the house.
“We’d like for you both to hear us out. We came to talk with Faye, though, we understand if you would want to be there, Vera.” Aunt Vera’s eyes shot to Faye and when there was still no discernable answer from her she nodded.
“Very well.” Vera waited until Julia and Alec Tennison were moving forward into the kitchen. A hand was on Faye’s back as she was lead forwards. Sitting down was a maneuver that was both silent and stiff.
“We came to discuss some things, Faye. We’d like it if—” Before her mother could finish her sentence, Faye finally spoke up with a tone that nearly equaled hatred.
“I won’t be moving back in with you.” The look of shock on both of her parents’ faces meant more than just a simple surprise and it made both Faye and her aunt very on edge.
“No. That isn’t why we’re here. We’d like for you to…” There was an exchange of glances before her mother continued. The woman’s voice had always been something that she never really enjoyed hearing. Her dislike for it only seemed to increase the more she spoke. “We are requesting that you all, everyone, never mention that you are aware we are alive. The Tennisons are no longer around according to official records. With recent events stirring up, we can’t risk losing our places within the ranks of the Puri.”
A pain went through Faye and it stuck onto her the more her mother spoke. They once more proved the one thing that Faye had been lead to believe all these years. A sense of abandonment crept up inside her and it was noticeable enough for her aunt to place a hand on her shoulder, squeezing tight. Pushing down everything, Faye took on the look of disdain that always occurred when she was dealing with people she didn’t like. All emotions were wiped away. “If that’s what you want. In fact, I couldn’t agree more with you. I can easily pretend like you never existed. It’s a skill that must run in the family, yes? So do not worry. I will no longer be your daughter. To me neither of you exist.” Her gaze was of pure anger and when it met with her father, Faye saw him recoil and glance down at the table. He always was the weaker one.
Before Julia could speak, Vera had taken over the conversation. “You both are no longer welcome here. I suggest you leave.” There was a pause before they rose up and began to walk away. “Please refrain from any further contact and don’t bother considering us family any longer. Family doesn’t do what you have done to Faye.” Faye’s own eyes watched on as the sisters who once were so close collided. “Whoever you have become is not someone I can call my sister. Get out.” There were still words fighting to come out of her aunt’s lips but nothing more was said as Faye’s once-parents left the house—hopefully forever.
Vera was trailing through the kitchen, putting things away here and there. Faye rose up quietly and stared at her. There was something strange about what had occurred but a feeling inside her made Faye realize that it wasn’t a bad thing. Moving into the room with silence she had perfected, Faye approached the older woman and instantly wrapped her arms around her. It was beginning to dawn on her that she was not the only one who had just lost a family member.
