Scratching the stubble on his chin, Peter considered it for a moment then shook his head. In the case of something like that happening right when they needed her too were so unlikely it wasn’t worth risk of loosing her as an asset.

“No, I can’t see it being a problem if you don’t.” He responded with a polite smile. “You’re a busy woman, I can respect that. If we can’t get a hold of you, I’m sure we’ll have other agents who can take over, so I wouldn’t worry about it.”

Barbara gave a huge smile, happy that they could come to terms with this agreement. Now she could help both sides of the double headed coin. “Fantastic. I’m glad we could work something out. I really want to help in any way I can. Well, in most ways.”

She gave a nod and stood up, stretching her hand out for Peter to shake. “I should probably be going now, actually. I have a few things to do and check in the with FBI. When you need me to sign the paperwork, just give me a call. I’ll swing by and give them my signature so we can get started.”

Her terms sounded completely fair, and Peter made a note to ensure only their top people handled Barbara’s files; they couldn’t take the risk. Not that he thought anyone under them would do it on purpose, but it could always just happen accidentally.

Nodding his head, Peter took the notepad, tore of the page and stuck it on a pile of things he had to go through. He could jot it down on the file later. “That’s fair enough. It would be handy if there was someway you could let us know prior to going on a mission? We wouldn’t need details of course, but just so we know when not to expect you, that kind of thing?”

Barbara raised an eyebrow, thinking on hiss question for a moment. “I’m sure I can accommodate that, but sometimes we get last minute assignments, as I’m sure happens in Fortis too. If that case arises, I may not be able to let you know right away or at all.” Those rarely ever happened in her department, but they still did once in a while, though Barbara had a feeling those were about to happen a lot more with this registration out.

“Will that be a problem?” If so, maybe this wasn’t the greatest idea she’d had. Hopefully, they could work something out. She didn’t see why not. They were both professional organizations.

“Good.” Peter nodded his head, needed no ore assurance that Barbra would keep her word. If not, they might be in some trouble. But then again, when were they not in trouble?

Leaning back in his chair, Peter scratched his chin. Hiring wasn’t usually his department - once he’d given the all clear on a new member, other people usually took over. “Well, I can call some people, get some forms written up, for our benefit mostly. Then we can get you meeting the teams and I’m sure you’ll be able to jump right in.” He said with a smile, attempting to channeling Nathan in terms of professionalism. “But how about we start with your personal details, so we can contact you?” Peter rifled through a draw in his desk before pulling out a few sheets of paper and handing them along to Barbra, as well as pen.

She nodded in agreement. “That’s sounds fine to me, but I want to make sure the people you have draw up the paperwork are ones you can trust. We don’t need newbies blabbing to the FBI that I’m also working for Fortis behind their back.” Barbara replied, her look firm and serious as she took the note pad and jotted down her phone number and email.

“Those are the fastest ways to contact me, though sometimes I won’t reply right away. If I’m on a mission for the FBI, depending on what it is, it could take some time to get a response back. And my FBI missions will always come first. Not that Fortis isn’t important, but we don’t want to raise suspicions.”

Peter nodded his head at appropriate points, taking in what she was saying. He didn’t know how ethical the whole things was, but given that she was an FBI agent, he figured Barbra had a better handle on things like that than he did.

“Of course, of course. Absolutely confidential. Well we’d be glad to have you on board. I understand your want to keep this private, but I can’t risk my company. I need to know that, should the FBI found out about this, it wont come down on my head.”

Barbara paused a moment, thinking about her answer. “No, I’ll take full responsibility for my own actions should they find out, but let’s hope they never do.” She answered, giving a curt nod. Barbara could handle the Bureau if things went south, the key was not letting that happen and definitely not letting the press find out.

After another minute, Barbara glanced at him with her eyebrows raised expectantly. “Well, what do I need to do to move forward this this? It wasn’t something I was planning on, more of a whim decision, but I’m sure about this move and don’t want to give myself time to chicken out.” She half teased, smirking at Peter slightly.

Peter’s face lit up in a smile as Barbra explained who she was. So there was another sister? “Well it’s a pleasure to meet you, I’ll apologise now in case I get you mixed up.” He chuckled, leaning back in his chair casually.

When she got to the point, Peter listened carefully, rubbing his chin and nodding his head. It was captures his interest, of course, and it couldn’t hurt to have someone from the FBI around on their side. “That all makes a lot of sense.” Peter said, pursing his lips and folded his arms. “And how, can I ask, would you be offering to help out with the EHRA mess?”

Barbara didn’t even give a response to his mix-up statement, just listening to the rest of what he had to say. “As for the EHRA, I’m not sure yet. The most I’ll be able to do until, I find out what exactly is doing on, would be to secretly pass along any information I know from the FBI to Fortis.” She paused, giving a small nod as if agreeing with herself.

“My ability is enhanced speed, so I’m sure Fortis will find great use for it, especially with these Hunters popping up more and more.” Barbara raised an eyebrow at him, almost as if surveying Peter again. “And again, I can’t emphasize this enough, my involvement will have to be top secret. Classified. The FBI can’t find out about me working for Fortis.”

“Government professionalism, right?” Micah mused, amused by how staunch the American Government was about attire, even when out in the field. And from what he understood, that’s where Barbara usually was.

Micah nodded, not exactly thrilled to hear that she was on the trail of the Hunters as well. “Well, we’re meeting,” He said with a smile. It was a little bit painful to look at her, she was so normal. “The Hunters are definitely active in New York. But they’re recruiting at a higher rate, and some of their members are getting sloppy.” Micah informed.

“Something along those lines.” She responded, smirking a little at him. Barbara gave a nod at his statement, agreeing with him. “Yes, they are getting a little sloppy, but I think that had to do with their over-confidence.” She mused, licking her lips. “One day soon they’ll probably see just how wrong it was to do that.”

She smiled over at him, surveying Micah for a minute. If I had known your mom, I’d say that she’d be proud. It’s probably true either way and she’d also say to watch your back. My opinion? I think you’re starting to get a little cocky too.” Barbara paused, giving him a firm stare. “Don’t let saving the world get to your head.”

If you could choose, would you keep the past you have, or grow up with your sisters?

“I don't know. Growing up with my sisters would have been nice, especially if the family was nice too, but I’ve also learned a lot from my past. I guess if the situation was good, then I’d like to have grown up with them. We could have been one bad-ass trio.”

After some important conversations, Peter had spent the rest of his day sorting through papers and figuring out everything that he was going to have to do now he was back at the office. He still wasn’t comfortable sitting behind a desk like this, but at least he was in a familiar city instead of DC.

“Hm?” His head snapped up when he heard the knock on his door, and a familiar face appeared. Peter was about to greet Tracy, but she introduced herself as someone completely different. Gesturing for her to enter, Peter stood up to greet her, extending his hand. “Nice to meet you Ms Zimmerman. You’re uh, you’re not related to a Tracy Strauss are you?” He had to ask, given that there obviously was something going on, and it had to be more interesting than staring at business papers.

Barbara chuckled lightly and walked into his office, reaching out to shake Peter’s hand. “Actually, yes. We’re sisters.” She answered, taking the seat opposite his desk without waiting for an invitation. “Though we were separated not too long after birth. That’s part of the reason I introduced myself. I suspected you’d think I was her.”

She leaned back in her chair and crossed her legs, staring at Peter expectantly. “I work for the FBI.” Getting straight to the point was probably the best idea at the moment. “The organization doesn’t want to be affiliated with Fortis, for obvious reasons, but I’m considering joining. It would have to be top secret, of course. Also, I’ve offered my teams services to Tracy, but not to Fortis. I’m sure you can understand that and unfortunately that’s the way it has to be until this mess with Shelby and the EHRA is cleared up.”

After receiving a message from someone at the Bureau about Peter Petrelli’s return, Barbara decided it was finally time to pay the man a visit. She wanted to speak with him and get an idea of what he’d been planning for Shelby, as well as what he’d been doing with his time away.

It didn’t take long for her to find the campus and Fortis building, but getting through the front desk security took a little longer than expected. However, several minutes later, Barbara finally found herself in the elevator heading up to the floor where Peter’s office was.

Stepping up to his door a few minutes later, Barbara took a deep breath and knocked on his door, but it was already open slightly. Taking it upon herself, she peeked around it and smiled brightly at Peter. “Mr. Petrelli? My name’s Barbara Zimmerman. May I have a word?”

Tracy smiled. “Believe me, I’d love not to have to worry about Shelby. Unfortunately, he’s the kind of bastard I’m paid to be concerned about.”

She stood and extended her hand, not sure if they were close enough to hug each other, but feeling odd being so formal with her sister. “It was lovely to meet you, Barbara. I have to get back to the office, but I hope we can see each other soon. And thanks for your help. It’s good to know you and your team are out there.”

“I know it is, but I think you also have other things to be concerned about right now. More important things.” Barbara replied, giving a tight smile at her sister. “Let me deal with Shelby for now.” She knew there wasn’t going to be much that Barbara would say that could convince Tracy to stop what she was doing, but she could still try.

As Tracy held her hand out to shake, Barbara reached out and somewhat reluctantly shook it. Maybe next time they’d learn more about each other to have a more intimate end to their conversation. “It was lovely finally meeting you too, Tracy. And my help is at her disposal any time you need.”

“I guess it can be,” said Tracy. It had been useful when she’d used her ability to save Noah and avoid being stabbed; murdering all those people was something else entirely, however. She still had dreams about it. Nightmares, really, where she’d wake up drenched in a cold sweat and spend the rest of the night awake, quietly trying to convince herself that she wasn’t a killer even though that was exactly what she was.

She pursed her lips together, preferring to speak about Shelby and the Hunters. She nodded along with Barbara’s explanation, not surprised to find any connections were still too tenuous to really be exploited, but disappointed anyway.

Tracy said, “Unfortunately, not really. I have a few different people working on it from different angles, not all of them by means the FBI needs to know about. And, of course, we’re trying to pursue a legal strategy. I’m hoping we can attack the law on constitutional grounds. Though that still leaves the bigger issue of Shelby unresolved.”

She laid her palms flat on the table and said, “Whatever we do, it’s going to take time. I’m just not sure how long we have before this starts to become irreparably damaging.”

She nodded at Tracy’s answer, respecting her sister decision to not share everything with her. It was good to have a few tricks up her sleeve, something the Hunters and Shelby wouldn’t see coming. Still, Barbara found herself curious as to what Tracy was planning and a part of her figured it had something to do with Micah.

“I’d say we’ve probably got a few months at the most. I’ve seen how some of these things happen in other countries and I have no doubt that Shelby will find a way to convince Homeland Security to move quickly on making the EHRA mandatory.” Barbara paused for a moment, thinking about Tracy’s concerns with Shelby.

“Don’t worry too much about Shelby. If you can attack him and win on a constitutional ground, I might have a way to get Shelby from a different angle. That is, if, you win with the law, otherwise with I’m thinking probably won’t work. I’ll have to do some more research on it as well to get my facts straight.”

Tracy hemmed appreciatively at Barbara’s ability and let a devilish smile spread across her face. “Enhanced speed. That must be all sorts of useful.”

The conversation pitched toward something darker and more secret after Barbara’s admission about unfortunate circumstances and her dismissal of any family. Tracy had an idea of what was being left unsaid, but knew better than to press for more. It would come out as they got to know each other, or it wouldn’t, but there was no sense in forcing the issue.

Instead, she returned to their previous topic. “I heard that Shelby might be involved with the Hunters somehow. Know anything about that?”
