“There are no wrong answers to this, your items will give it a nice personal touch,” Violet assured with a nod then smiled, “I would love to be a veterinarian one day, I’m actually leaning towards that for my career. Animals are my life.” The young witch gushed a little. “I can relate to that it took me hours to go through my room.”

“That’s... very nice, thank you.” Her positive attitude about it did bring a small smile to his lips, his shoulders relaxed slightly. He had been worried that his items were lame and unhelpful, and while his doubts didn’t entirely go away, it was still nice. “Oh? Are you in college right now?” He turned towards her, completely invested. “It’s a great job if you love animals, getting to help them. Sometimes you can’t, and that’s when it’s a little... rough, but for me the good outweighs the bad.” He nodded in agreement when she talked about taking a long time to find something - he’d done the exact same. “Is it bad that I just went through my boxes of random stuff until I found something?”

Mary simply wished to find those she called family and the woman she loved, those surrounding her and the pointless ball were nothing but annoying modern day people who were seeming to be more of a nuisance than she was happy to accept which had been the only reason as to why she had stepped off to the side. “Well I suppose that is true, the only thing that truly matters to me is my family and I cannot and would never throw them in some silly capsule type thing.” she told the stranger, in her typical annoyed toned voice. “Aliens?…you have got to be kidding me.” she would’ve rolled her eyes but she supposed times had changed and perhaps people believed in such fairy tales now. “Not at all, it is the whole point of the crummy capsule: to place something of value in there, if that happens to be something relating to your pet then so be it.”

“I would hope not,” he said, his voice light. “That’s nice, though. I guess I’m a little too into attaching memories to things. Hard to let go of them, especially the stuff that involves my sister.” His parents were a give or take - he loved them, but since he never really got that love in return, it was hard for him to feel overly attached to anything that involved them. His sister, however, was a very different story. “What? What’s the issue with aliens?” Her judgment did turn his head, an eyebrow raised. “Anything’s possible. What’s so hard to believe that living things exist on other planets?” Especially being a witch, while he’d never dabbled with his powers, it clearly meant that things much more powerful than just human beings existed. It made the existence of life on other planets obvious in his mind. Nothing was out of the realm of possibilities, to him. “Uh... thank you. I kind of feel like I’m sacrificing something for her, but she has a new collar. A much nicer, less scratched up one, so I doubt she’s gonna be too mad at me for giving something she’ll never see again, otherwise. What’d you bring?”

Maroon lips curved upward, exposing pearly teeth. “I think it’s a sweet idea. For the aliens. Who knows they might not even have pet dogs.” She laughed. “Did you write a little letter on your dog’s behalf as well?” she teased gently. “In all honesty, I agree with you. It’s always hard to part with the things important to you.” Nadia had very little that was important to her, hardly any items. She lifted the book in her hand. “This was as close as I could get—at least last minute. I forgot about this part of the invitation. I feel a little bad, do you think they’ll know?” She eyed the stranger. Nadia was always ready to find someone useful. The more friends the better.

“... guess so. Maybe they’ll have another use for it, though. Or they’ll spend a long time trying to figure out what we used it for.” There was a brief pause at her following question. That was meant to be entirely hidden, thrown in along with the rest of everything, but after a moment, he reached into his back pocket. Tugging out a small paper, he opened it up to show that it was covered with colorful paw prints. “Does this count? You know, she’s leaving her mark on the world. A very colorful mark.” He let out a laugh before folding it again, pushing it into his back pocket. “No. I’m sure there’s plenty of random things people are tossing in. What’s the book?” He gestured to it, his head tilted with curiosity. “Even if it is unimportant, it’d be pretty easy to make up a story about it. Maybe you’ll be taking advantage of a little blind trust, but I don’t think it’ll hurt anyone.”

SHE’D SPENT TOO LONG TRYING TO FIND something worthy of putting in the time capsule , all because after the passing of her parents , everything became much more worthy of keeping. what she brought was a lot less interesting than she had hoped it would be , but it has a story , and that’s all that matters. at his comment , elena smiles , looking down at the collar in his hand. “ it’s not , ” elena reassures , shaking her head. “ maybe an alien will find it useful. this , though , they won’t , ” she says before holding up a box of old hair clips , most of which she hadn’t used since she was in kindergarten. “ and even if they don’t find your dog collar useful , at least it’s not gross like this is … but like you said , it’s hard to find something that’s both meaningful but not meaningful enough to miss it for the rest of my life. that’s my excuse. ” part truth , part lie. it’s become difficult to tell what’s truth and what’s sugarcoated in order to be light conversation friendly. “ what did you actually pick for yourself? ”

his eyes flickered, curiously, to the box she soon displayed in front of him. he eyed them for a minute, before a small grin pulled onto her lips. “you don’t think aliens’ll care about fashion?” he carefully reached out to pick one up, analyzing it for a moment. “maybe they’ll love these things. i wouldn’t blame them. they’re cute.” he shook the item in his hand as he spoke before gently sitting it back down as if it were a thousand dollar item in store, taking a small step back. “gross? how’s it gross?” now there was a sense of panic, wondering what he’d just touched. something gross? “i don’t know, janie ruffed it up a bit before i got her a new one.” raising the collar, he pointed out the scuffs of thread pulling out. “oh, uh...” there was a sense of embarrassment as he tugged the key chain out of his back pocket. not by the item itself, but with the photo it held. not his best looks, in his opinion. it held a tiny photo of him in second grade, a smile bright enough that his cheeks covered his eyes almost entirely. “they sold these when i was in school. not sure why i wanted one so bad, except all my friends were talking about how their parents were gonna get one... so i spent an entire day running around, asking for change after school until i had enough to buy it. little did tiny me know that old me isn’t the biggest fan of that haircut. it’s probably best in a capsule than on some shelf in my house for the rest of forever.”

“WOW, this is like… extremely formal,” Ophelia said slowly. She was starting to be glad she let Kol pick out her dress. “And this happens once a year?” She whistled. “That’s a lot of dresses.”

“Yeah... are you surprised?” He eyed her curiously, assuming that was to be expected, especially when they sent out the invitations. It all said formal, which had personally been hard for Keanu. He was much more of a casual-wear kind of guy, outside of work. He’d had to go get a suit. ‘Well... I guess so? I never really thought of it like that... though I’m sure people wouldn’t notice if you repeat a dress after a few years. Or maybe they would. I wouldn’t,” he rushed out. “It’s nice, though. Makes me feel fancier than I really am.”

“All I could think to bring were crystals,” Violet mused clutching a small velvet drawstring pouch in her palm, both arms were crossed nervously, waiting for the night to start. The sooner it did the sooner she could go home and get back to other tasks at hand.

“Crystals?” He echoed the item back to her, raising an eyebrow. “That’s... much nicer than what I did. I mean, better than a twenty-five dollar dog collar and...” he hesitated with mentioning what he brought, still feeling a bit embarrassed about it. “a key chain with my second grade picture in it. I doubt any future people will be thrilled to see a photo of some random veterinarian, but I didn’t really wanna let go of anything else. I guess I’m too sentimental.”

“Question and I need complete honesty; it’s important.” She added like she was about to ask some profound question that actually had any meaning to anyone but her but then of course she had to go and ask. “How do I look?…it’s like really important that I look amazing since you know, like the whole founders committee is here and if I look presentable, it’s gonna be another stamp on my very long resume of why I should win Miss Mystic Falls.”

“Okay... not sure why I’d lie.” Of course, there was always a bubble of nerves when it came to questions with requests of honesty. Though he’d never embraced his magic, it was still there. It didn’t help that nerves were when he really seemed to accidentally use them. He took a deep breath, preparing himself to remain calm... and then she asked. Keanu raised an eyebrow, tilting his head to the side. “... don’t you have friends you can ask that?” He felt strange, telling her if she looked good or not, though he nodded, eventually. “I like that dress,” he complimented. “Is it a tight race? Miss Mystic Falls? I never really keep up with that. Though I might look good with a tiara...” His voice drifted, before letting out a quiet laugh. “but don’t worry. I’m not adding to the competition any time soon.”

some might describe keanu as shy, merely because he wasn’t the chattiest of people unless he knew someone well enough, but a big part of that changed when he had alcohol in hand. parties as fancy as this one seemed to be also weren’t his scene, but he was trying his best to just blend in and have fun. he looked down, holding onto bright pink, sparkly dog collar in his hand, his head tilted as he just started talking to whoever was next to him. “it’s hard to find something important to you that you don’t care about throwing in a tube that you’ll never see again, hoping that... aliens, or whoever decides to open it up, is impressed by it, and doesn’t just toss it off to the side.” he paused, side eyeing them. “not that... this isn’t what i picked for myself. that’s in my back pocket, but - well, i thought i might as well put my dog’s old collar, too... is that lame? that’s... really lame, isn’t it?”
