I NEEEEEED this one, Rhink - “Why did you lie to me?”
The action probably hurt more than the actual lie, Rhett thought, staring out the window of his car, hands on the wheel but the keys still in his pocket. He blinked, fingers slowly loosening to drop into his lap. They….they didn’t lie to one another. It just was never something they did, why would they need to lie to one another. Why would they lie to one another. They were best friends, best brothers. They were a duo, with one you got the other and you couldn’t have that with lies and secrets.
But Link did lie to him, he lied to him big time and Rhett found that some how the action had thrown his world out of orbit more than the lie. The lie, yes. It hurt, and upset him, but…but the fact that Link had to lie to him. Link felt like he should lie to him, as if Rhett wasn’t good enough for the truth or something. The taller dropped his head onto the steering wheel of the car taking careful and measured breaths. Counting down from ten, before climbing out of the car and turning to walk back into the studio.
Link was still there, staring at a notebook in his hands, a notebook Rhett had found cleaning out the old dusty boxes from their move that they’d never unpacked. Just shoved away in the attic. “Why did you lie to me?” The head snapped up, blue eyes wide and shocked. Like he thought Rhett had left, as if he wasn’t going to talk about this.
“Rhett….” The smaller tried, bending the notebook in his hands.
“No…Link, Link why? Why did you lie to me? Just…you owe me that much.” He lied, he lied and Rhett…Rhett was left to move on with his life and years had passed since the whole incident and…
“You…you didn’t. We grew up in rural North Carolina, you were a basketball star with this wholesome family of a mom and dad and older brother. The girls thought you were funny since we were 6….you. I was some weird confused kid who just….you didn’t need that. You didn’t need us..” His eyes down, and Rhett shook his head, stepping over and taking the notebook.
“I asked you, if you ever thought there could be an us. A real us, a more….and you told me you never thought about it, and that you…..you never could make a more work. As if, as if none of this was ever written. As if you…you never thought about the idea of us ever being a thing, and you did. You lied to me…..I wasn’t asking if you liked me because…because I wanted to make sure you didn’t…..I wanted…I wanted an us. I wanted a more, I wanted to be with you and I wanted to make something happen besides what we had and you turned me down….I wanted an us.” He’d wanted so much more and he’d been left with this idea for so long, given the impression that Link only wanted friendship, only wanted a business and a best friend and that Rhett could never be more when he was lying. It was all a lie, and he’d wanted what Rhett wanted.
“Rhett….” Wanted, meaning both had missed the chance of a more, and Link never wanted this, this fight. This awkwardness or the want to cry in front of Rhett out of sheer frustration of how to explain himself. Explain for the younger him and his confusion as a teen, and young adult.
“Is there still a chance for us?” Link finally looked up, blue meeting green and Rhett shook his head. “Is there? Do you still feel everything you wrote? No lies this time Link.” The other nodded hesitant, shaky and slow. As if he was afraid, and Rhett handed back his notebook. “I…I want it to, I’ve always wanted it Link…always. I still do, but…you lied to me, but…i still want to make the us work….”
“Tonight.” Link said softly, finally gaining his voice back. “We can talk. I’ll answer everything, anything you want. I’ll tell everything to you…we…we can make this work.” Rhett finally, finally smiled and Link felt his chest loosen.
