Emily, more than anything, hated what was about to happen.
Upon hearing about Mike’s arrival at the small town of Magnolia, Emily had immediately become frightened, then angry, and then furious in that order. She was wondering why they all managed to gather here, as if there was some sort of strange signal that was pulling the entire group together, for better or for worse. However, being that she would hold a grudge against two people from that fateful night, it was inconvenient, to say the least, that Mike was here, as he held the strongest grudge in her mind.
Emily had decided long ago that she would not ever be afraid of any man for any reason, and Mike was no exception to this rule. So, days after his arrival, she sent him the first text she had sent him since the incident, since before the incident, demanding that he meet her in a public location so they could ‘work things out.’
Really, Emily was just going to threaten him. And she was sure that he knew this was coming. After all, he had dated her, and he did know a considerable amount about her, perhaps even more than Matt did. But in either case, when he raised that gun to her face, he completely ruined any semblance of trust he had with Emily after the incident with Jess. She had learned never to trust a Monroe again.
Sipping at her chai, she didn’t look at him as he came in, keeping her eyes on the newspaper in front of her, instead. “Well. Nice of you to join me.”
Even with the previous knowledge of Emily’s living situation in Magnolia ( courtesy of the little updates Jess would text him ), there was no prepping himself for what was about to go down. Of course, Mike knew it was bound to happen — there was no way in hell they could go on living day by day, avoiding each other and pretend nothing had happened — but ‘working things out’ was never actually working things out. Not with Emily. Or, at least, not the Emily he knew before the shitstorm at the lodge literally blew up in their faces.
Still, he wasn’t about to make up excuses not to see her. She deserved to have this conversation with him. Mike owed it to her, and he owed it to himself to step up and take responsibility for whatever actions his paranoia-ridden mind deemed appropriate at the time, however difficult it may be to actually talk about it especially with her.
A public location set as their meeting spot gave him a dose of relief, however small it may have been, because at least they would be in a controlled environment, rather than somewhere private where tempers between the two of them could and probably would escalate quickly. It only took him a brief moment to scan the area before he spotted Emily, sucking in a deep breath before approaching and taking the seat across from her.
“ I’d say it’s nice to see you too, but I could already tell by the blunt text that’s not exactly a mutual feeling, ” he quipped with a purpose intent of keeping any hint of humour from his tone, because God knows the last thing he needs to do is crack a joke when she quite clearly means nothing other than business. So, with dark irises fixed on her expectantly, Mike waited for her to start in on what he knew was about to be the most uncomfortable, tense conversation.
{Mike, the name and voice connected through her trance quickly and she snapped her head in its direction. He was here, he was alive and through her fear she could see him. Slowly everything started to fall away, the wendigo became anything in front of her and it was just mike now, walking to her. She was supposed to be better.} “No… I’m not. But i’m supposed to be.”
From the crouch he’d been situated in, Mike lowered himself further to take a seat beside Sam, forearms hanging over his knees as he watched her in silence for a brief moment. The expression faded and it seemed like she was coming back from whatever horror she’d been reliving, so he offered a small smile, shaking his head a little at her response. “ Nah, you don’t have to be... Not this soon. ” A sigh drifted out, tip of his tongue poking out to lick over dry lips before continuing. “ I don’t think any of us are. But I’ve been told this shit gets better. Eventually. ”
“Well, that depends, now, doesn’t it, Mistah Munroe? If a handsome rascal like yerself can show the lady a fun time, the lady just might be obliged to give ‘im a safe house,” she teased, adding in a playful wink for effect. But she could barely hold up the charade herself, the giggles threatening to overcome her. Jess knew the more serious conversations would come later. So much happened and they couldn’t brush it under the rug forever. But right now they were slipping right back into normal them, and the relief completely overwhelmed her. She couldn’t remember feeling this happy in so long.
The entire time she spent showing him the apartment, even if it was just the main area, they didn’t let go of each other’s hand. It made her heart flutter thinking about it. Though Mike could be seen as your stereotypical, cocky jock by a lot of people, Mike had a real sweet side that often only she saw. He could always make her feel like the most important girl in the world with the way he looked at her. Between that and their constant joking, she couldn’t keep the grin off her face. “Exactly. Bubbles are so overrated. If you’re sharing a jacuzzi right, they’ll just get splashed out anyway.” She bit her lip and gave another wink just before he pulled her back in. And Jess made her way back very happily, resting her hands on his chest.
“And your number one fan missed those guns, which means she better get invited to the after-party, too. Otherwise, she can’t deliver her presents.” Giggling, she leaned in until their noses were touching. For a moment, she went quiet, just gazing up into his eyes. God, she missed them. Feeling another rush of excitement run through her, she bounced on her toes a little and reached up to kiss him again. “I still can’t believe you’re here!”
“ Hmm. ” A low hum vibrated against the back of his throat, acting as though he were deep in thought of the opportunity presented to him. “ Well, I reckon this outlaw’s got lady luck on his side, on account’a I got a whole lot’a fun and time to give, ” he drawled out in the old western accent, that mischievous smirk tugging at his lips once again. Of course, after both learned the other was alive after being interrogated for what felt like forever, Jess had already been gone and Mike didn’t feel right about asking her for any information of her whereabouts that night. Not over the phone. So, yeah, he had plenty of questions and plenty of things that he felt he needed to tell her while they’d been separated. However, he was obviously pretty damn content with the playful chemistry bouncing back and forth between them, and knew that the much needed conversation between them would arise with time once they got more settled with each other. He was in no rush to relive that night.
Night terrors were enough of a reminder for him, particularly the one about losing her. No matter how hard he’d tried to catch up and rescue Jess from whatever the fuck had snatched her up from the cabin ( which he later found out was a wendigo Hannah ), she was always just out of reach. A very hard pill to swallow, it was frustrating and pretty devastating to live with the fact that he hadn’t been that knight in shining armor he always preached he would be, for her. So with her hand in his own larger one, for real this time, Mike had no intentions of letting her go, unless she physically managed to pry herself out of his grasp.
“ Such a waste of bubbles, honestly. Why blow around bubbles when you can just blow other shit that’s, like... five thousand times more fun? ” He mirrored her wink with one of his own as his arms carefully circled around her waist, one hand slowly roaming over her spine before sliding back down again. Cocking his head a little to one side, Mike’s interest undoubtedly peaked by the suggestive expression he sported when Jess went on to tease him further. “ VIP invitation’s reserved for you, always, ” he murmured the response through smirk when he felt her nose lightly brush against his own. His eyes greedily took in her features for the second time that night, but those bright blues of hers pulled his focus back in on them, like they’d done countless times before as a means of suckering Mike into doing something he’d normally be a little iffy on. However, whether big or little, the things that made her happy, in return made him happy. She was, after all, the light of his life, and he tried to keep good care to make sure she shone as brightly as possible. Much like now, with Jess’ burst of excitement, it caused a smile to break out across his face, and he couldn’t refrain from capturing her lips in another kiss before he even considered responding. “ I can’t believe I didn’t come here sooner. Think I lost my damn mind from trying to make sense of me staying there, when my little chick-a-dee already flew the coop. ”
As much as those happy tears threatened at her eyes, they stayed where they were. How could she start crying when he made her laugh like that? He always managed, honestly. It was one of the reasons Jess loved being with him so much. They could tease back and forth all day. With Mike, things were always fun. “And you’re a right scoundrel, you are, Mistah Munroe. Goin’ around and makin’ ladies go scarlet. You just happen’ta be lucky this lady will let that crime slip, on account’a it bein’ so long.” She giggled again, and sure enough, her cheeks were flushed. It never took much effort from Mike.
The smirk on his face made her laugh all over again, and she reached her hand up to trace a scar. “Totally more badass. I think it earns you at least a few bonuses to your hunk level.” The extra stolen kiss he gave her before she pulled back lit up her grin all over again. Before he got here, Jess worried about what their relationship would be like when and if he came. If things would be awkward, if what happened ruined any chance they had. But on the contrary, things felt normal again. The relief was overwhelming.
Turning, but not letting go of his hand, she led him inside and shut and locked the door behind them. “Welcome to my crib,” she replied, putting on her best official-sounding voice. “In the kitchen you’ll find the ever-so classy empty bottles of tequila, and the bathroom features the best bubble-less jacuzzi money can buy.” Jess cut off with another laugh as she showed off the apartment. Overall, it was pretty simple. She brought most of her material things, but she got all her furniture here. A white, fluffy couch stood against the wall of the living room, with a glass coffee table sitting atop a rug that matched the couch in front. The TV wasn’t huge either, but it was a decent size, at least. The shelves on the opposite wall were a bit empty save for some framed pictures and DVDs. For a girl living alone, it worked. “I do my best,” she said, shrugging. “Guess you better get on that soon. I can help, if you want. Oh, and by help, I do mean sit on your couch and admire those guns of yours.”
Back before that fatal night at the lodge, before he thought he’d lost her forever, Mike honestly figured their relationship was at its prime with how well they bounced off of each other; the quite visible chemistry between the two of them was unfathomable by anyone on the outside looking in. But now, after being able to basically pick up from where they left off, it was proven that he had been wrong. It seemed that the shitstorm of events had only managed to finally bring them even closer than they were before, if that was even a possibility, and he honestly couldn’t have envisioned a more exemplary reunion. The very thought had a permanent smile plastered across his chiselled features, and laughter finally rumbled up from the pit of his stomach as Jess kept the charade going strong, which caused him to break character for only a brief moment. “ Golly gee, Miss Jessica. Harbourin’ a fugitive’s a mighty stern crime in these parts... You sure you don’t wanna turn a rascal feller, like me, in? ” A dark eyebrow cocked up, added with his eyelids dropping slightly, to make up a more mysterious expression, though the hint of a pout to his lips gave away how badly he was trying to hold it together.
Turning his head slightly, his lips found the palm of her hand while she traced a scar, pressing a soft kiss to her skin, all while cognac irises remained fixed on her. Despite how swallow Mike may come off to anybody and (almost) everybody, always having preached that only a blind man wouldn’t notice just how fucking capital ‘G’ gorgeous the blonde was, what had really pulled him toward Jessica was her fun-loving personality. Much like himself, she could take a joke and fool around, even if the timing may not be deemed appropriate, and that was one of the long list of things he loved about her the most. Of course, they had their sentimental moments — what real couple in the entire universe didn’t? — but it was all with ease, and ease Mike had been surprised came so quickly for him with her.
The professional voice Jess so easily slipped into while showing off her apartment to him caused his mouth to stretch into a wide grin, laughing again at the introductory comments she made. “ Empty tequila bottles are the new decor everyone’s been raving about, and who needs bubbles nowadays? Totally overrated. ” He gave a shrug of his broad shoulders, followed by a gentle squeeze to her hand, and then he was carefully pulling her back in closer to him. It was surprising, really, that he’d managed to last as long as he did with the Jess-fever he’d developed since laying eyes on her. “ Oh, really? Well, in that case, I could use all the help I can get. There’s no gun show without their number one fan in the audience. ”
“ i’m real mike. i can prove it too. a nice right hook will do the trick!! ” beth sputtered out. what was WITH them? first jess, now him? she was real, she was real, she was r e a l. her pulse was real. her body was real. her anger was real. “ yeah, i kind of fucking died with hannah after taking a nose dive off a cliff. ” her words were cold and harsh; matched her current facial expression. the eighteen year old scoffed, as she felt her blood boil more and more as he talked. seriously? “ i don’t give a F U C K if you guys are sorry. it’s not going to change the fact that we both died… ‘cause of you guys!! not only that, but you totally fucked hannah over. she’s my sister. you tricked her! if anything, the only ones i’m not mad at are chris and josh and sam. jesus christ, mike! you can’t just waltz in with an apology and expect for everything to be okay! ”
For once in what was probably all nineteen years of his life, Mike remained silent. Thinking he deserved this, knowing he deserved a lot more, his jaw remained clamped shut as Beth began to rip into him over the still very fresh wound of what had occurred the first fatal night at the lodge. However, her last accusation was the oil needed to kickstart the gears in his head, allowing him to finally speak what was weighing heavily on his mind. “ I’m not expecting anything. I don’t expect you to forgive me, or any of us, for what happened, alright? I know I don’t deserve your forgiveness; I’m not asking for you to forgive me. ” With a heavy sigh, a bandaged hand lifted to rub over his face ( a habit he’d developed over the course of the year ), before he went on to plead his case. “ Beth, if I could go back and fuckin’... change what happened, if I could stop it from happening, I would. But I can’t. There’s literally nothing I can do to fix it, or any other shit that went down. But that doesn’t mean that I don’t feel like a piece of shit about it — or that I don’t realize what we did was totally fucked up, ‘cause I do. I never wanted to live with regrets or whatever the fuck else, but this? I could never imagine that I was gonna have this kinda’ colossal regret, one that’s gonna haunt me for the rest of my fuckin’ life. I know it’s not gonna change what happened — nothing can change what happened — but I am sorry. ”
{Sam was paralyzed by fear, gripping the rocks on the wall behind her she stared infront of her, as if a wendigo was right in front of her. She didn’t move a muscle but she sat shaking, flinching everyonce in a while as she remembered it’s shrill scream in her ears. She was going to die, She wasn’t actually safe. It wasn’t dawn, they were still at blackwood and she was petrified. The blonde wanted to scream right back, to punch hannah in her wendigo nose but she couldn’t move. incomprehensible babble slipped through her lips and she was losing it.}
“ —Sam? ” Upon first approaching his friend once he recognized her from a distance, a small smile had settled on his lips. However, when he was close enough to notice the obvious distress she was in, Mike’s brow furrowed and his smile immediately dropped to match his concern. “ Hey. Are you okay? ” Slowly moving in closer, he lowered down to a crouch beside her, cognac irises examining the expression slightly similar to one Josh had displayed in the mines while he’d been in some kind of trance.

Jess still kept her arms around him. She couldn’t bring herself to let go. Holding him helped her know this was real, because there were more than enough dreams lately where something like this happened, only for everything to disappear the second she opened her eyes. A girl could only stand so much of that. Finally seeing him for real made tears well up in her eyes before she could stop them. They were happy, though. So unbelievably happy.
The explanation drew a giggle out of her. “Now, what’s a nice gentleman like you goin’ around sayin’ such pretty things like that for? Yer not tryin’ to make a lady blush now, are ya?” she teased, giving her best accent, too. But Jess could only keep it up so long. A flurry of emotions whirled within her, but the joy stood out the most.
“I missed your face more,” Jess retorted, grinning wider, if that was even possible. For a moment, she couldn’t do anything but gaze up at him, taking in the sight. It felt so surreal. She worried for so long that he died that night, and then, for a while, she worried they would never see each other again. Unable to help herself, she leaned up and planted a quick, happy kiss on his lips. “C’mon, come inside! Dramatic hallway reunions aren’t fun if you have to stand out there the whole time.”
As soon as the hint of waterworks made itself apparent in those bright blue eyes of hers, Mike lifted his bandaged hand to carefully cradle her face, his thumb just lightly brushing against her cheek. He shook his head a little as well, in a mixture of disbelief due to the fact that they were literally standing right in front of each other again after all this time apart, and also silently willing Jess not to cry because if she did, he knew he’d be a goner. Despite how much of a ‘manly man’ Mike took pride in being, the one thing that definitely wouldn’t fail to get him all choked up ( added in the mess of emotions he was already feeling now ) would be seeing her cry, regardless of whether they were happy tears or not. So, of course, he went back to being silly old Mike in an attempt to pull another giggle out of her as a distraction. “ Well, I reckon it’s been a mighty long time since I’ve seen them cheeks turn all rosy-like, miss Jessica, so... guilty as charged. ” A cheeky grin tugged up the corners of his mouth after he flashed her an exaggerated wink of his eye.
“ Yeah? Do I still have the hunky quality intact with all these marks? Personally, I think it makes me look a helluva lot more badass, but..., ” he trailed off as a mischievous smirk tugged back the corner of his lips, tilting his head a little to one side, sights fixed on the blonde in his arms. It was crazy how easily they were falling back into place with each other, almost identical to how their relationship had been before everything went to shit. So when she leaned up, Mike instinctively leaned in a bit to meet her lips with his own in a chaste kiss, a second one quickly stolen before she could pull back to invite him inside. “ Yeah, guess it kinda takes away from it after awhile, huh. Are you gonna give me a tour of your sweet pad, like MTV Cribs style? Show me the fridge full of champagne bottles and the jacuzzi first — we can get to the rest later. ” Giving a playful waggle of his dark eyebrows, he followed Jess inside and took in his surroundings, before giving a low whistle of approval. “Damn, girl. You know how to feng shui your way right into a guy’s heart. Guess I'm gonna have to step up my game and actually unpack my boxes. ”
“ if i’m not mistaken, mike, i’d say you don’t want to see me. ” her words were bitter, and venemous; the teenager was clenching her fist tightly. “ although, for someone who’s about to get punched in the FREAKIN face, i wouldn’t be too happy to see myself either, ” beth warned, her eyes narrowing towards the older boy. “ you fucking s i c k o .”
“ There’s no way... no fuckin’ way. ” Now he was starting to question whether or not this whole scenario was actually real or not. Was he currently sound asleep, the terror that shook him at night as well as his guilt brewing up this confrontation in a sick dream? “ We— Beth... Sam and I saw your grave, down in the mines. I just— What? ” Of course, her final insult was what pulled him out of the small delusional episode he’d been sucked into. “ Holy shit. —Beth, listen, I’m sorry. I’m so fuckin’ sorry. It was just a stupid prank, y’know? We were all supposed to laugh it off after, but it just got— What happened to you and Hannah... That wasn’t— ” He cut himself off, shaking his head as his gaze dropped, unable to express in words the overwhelming guilt and shame he’d carried on through the horrifying discovery of the Washington twins’ fate.
“okay, the people here are definitely not like the ones in forks.”
“ —I know you’re not talking about silverware right now... I mean, please go ahead and confirm it for me anyway, ‘cause that image is something I could do without for the rest of my life. ”
“ i’m, uhm… ” beth swallowed down whatever fear she had. for some reason, she SWORE the back of her neck was still sore. “ i’m looking for my brother. have you seen him? tall, wears hipster plaid shirts, kind of an ass sometimes. ” even then, she still choked on her words.
The familiar voice caused his muscles to tense up and the hair on the back of his neck to raise instinctively, the reasoning behind this being that she was supposed to be dead. And yet, there she was, standing clear as day as Mike slowly turned to face Beth, a look of utmost disbelief and shock etched across his chiselled features, before he managed to stammer out just above a whisper: “ The fuck— You’re... alive? ”
Ever since she moved here, Jess kept Mike updated on everything. Well, not everything. But she told him where she was going, where she lived now, even told him about their other friends being here. Sometimes the texts were just little things. Because she really, really missed him. She hadn’t even seen him since that night at the lodge. At first she thought he died, because no one told her otherwise, and during her stay at the hospital, she could scarcely make herself talk, let alone try and ask after him again. If she did ask, she’d been too out of it to even realize it or know if she got a response. It wasn’t until after she got out and made the decision to move that she knew he was still alive.
Still, she wasn’t sure whether or not he’d follow her to Magnolia. She hoped he would, but she knew she couldn’t expect him to. Every time she heard a knock at her apartment door, though, a new surge of hope bubbled up in her, always to be shot down when she answered it. Except this time. She was sitting on the couch, flipping through channels while she ignored the college homework she had laid out on the coffee table, figuring she could have Emily help her with it later. When she knock came, she let out a sigh and forced herself off the couch, ready to be disappointed again.
But then she opened the door, and there was Mike. For a second, she just stared blankly in total disbelief. “M-Mike? Oh my god! Mike! You’re here!” She let out an excited squeal and threw her arms around him, not even caring that it still hurt hugging anyone. She was too excited. “Oh my god, when did you get here? Why didn’t you text me?!”
As much as he’d hoped and really tried to rebuild, life just wasn’t the same back in British Columbia after the events at the Washington’s lodge. It was no surprise that Mike had big plans that he’d wanted to follow through with, but there was no way he could focus on moving forward like nothing had happened. Not while his mind and heart were somewhere completely different. Since learning of their friend’s departure, it soon became clear to Mike that he was the only one trying to grasp at nothing by staying home, so he figured a fresh start would do more good than bad, and ended up in Magnolia. The sudden move certainly hadn’t been on his agenda, but it was something he knew was needed in order to carry on with the healing process.
Several scenarios of how this reunion could possibly go down raced through his mind, and he honestly wasn’t sure if Jess was even home or not. However, hearing the doorknob turn quickly gave him the answer to that question and before he could try to further prepare himself, the door was swinging open and there she stood, staring right back at him with a similar expression to the one he was sure was etched across his chiselled features. Lips soon curved up to from a lopsided smile and something seemed to just click, sending Mike back into that renown playful attitude. “ Well, howdy, miss, ” he drawled out in the best western accent he could muster up, his stance nonchalant as he leaned a shoulder against the doorframe. That act was short-lived, though, as soon as he felt her arms wrap around him, carefully circling his own around her. For once in what felt like a lifetime, Mike could finally allow himself to just ... breathe. The wave of relief that washed over him when he first laid eyes on Jess was unlike any other, and to be able to physically hold her? It was so surreal.
“ Rolled up in here last night, y’know, still living out of boxes, but— I’m here. ” He chuckled, a broad grin now displaying his pearly whites at the reaction he’d gotten from her, pulling back just enough so he could look down at her. “ This, right here, is why I didn’t text you. You shoulda’ seen your face light up like the Fourth of July, girl. ” Just as easy as it came, the playful demeanour simmered down as he took a moment to examine Jess. “ I missed this face. ”
She wasn’t sure how long she’d been banging on the box, but the second that it opened confusion seemed to hit the brunette like a ton of bricks. How is she alive? Was Bonnie okay? Where was she? “Where am I?” She finally choked out, looking at the stranger who’d helped her out of the coffin. Worry clear on her features.
Why had he thought opening up a random coffin was a great idea? He hadn’t. Thought, that is. The impulse to satisfy his curiosity was something he’d needed to work on, especially considering he’d almost lost two fingers because of it. However, it seemed this particular choice wasn’t a fatal one ( so far ) as he lifted the lid up to reveal a girl. “ What the fuck. ” Dark eyes grew slightly wide with surprise, but Mike didn’t hesitate to help her up. “ You’re... coming out of a coffin, ” the dumbfounded reply came out before he could fully process the discovery, lips pressing together firmly to form a line before suddenly parting again as he attempted to collect his thoughts. “ Why are you— How long were you in there? ”
