“I don’t think me reacting is gonna drive it away, the game doesn’t work like that”
“What did I say -” her face fell and she turned her icy stare to him. “I lost the growlithe.”
“A what?” Snow looked towards where Cal was pointing but didn’t see anything. “Are you feeling alright?”
“Ssh!” Her eyes trained on the phone, she swiped her finger and froze. A few seconds later, a wide smile broke her face and she relaxed. “Doin’ just fine, thank you.”
Unexpected Guests | Sif && Cal
Sif visibly relaxed when she heard Calhoun answer from the other side of the door, glad she was still awake. Sif didn’t know what else to do, and Cal was the first person she thought of, naturally. Still, Sif looked nearly offended when Cal questioned her, shifting her weight and leaning against the door frame.
“She is a dog.” Sif answered, and scratched behind her companion’s ears lovingly. The dog responded with a wag of her tail, looking back at Sif, before looking to Cal. She moved forward to sniff at Cal, and Sif grinned at the other woman.
“Her name is Visenya. I was going to introduce you to her in the morning, but.. Well, I’m not entirely sure how my roommate would handle waking up and seeing her.” Sif tried not to look too worried as she chewed on her lip. Truthfully, she wasn’t sure how a lot of people would react to seeing her, considering her wolfish appearance, and Sif worried that if Scar received enough complaints, Visenya would be taken from her.
“”When you say dog, do you mean dog or of the dog family, mainly it’s fucking ancestor the wolf?” The beast moved forward and Cal let her, didn’t move or step back but let her sniff her leg. Surely, Sif didn’t actually go out and buy, or - hell - just adopt a wolf out of the wild. Actually, that sounded exactly like what she’d do. Shit.
Cal looked from Sif, to her “dog” to Sif again. “You need somewhere to stay for the night and you want it to be here?” She glanced behind her, looking at Sam who was at attention at the scent of a new animal near him. “We can see how they do together.” Cal said, standing aside as she kept an eye on the “dog.”
“Come on get inside, quick.”
Kylo laughed at her, smirking in defiance. “Nah thanks, I’ll take a raincheck.”
“I don’t have time for this,” she said, taking him firmly by the arm. “If it’s not one thing, it’s another.”
She released the heavy breath and looked at the woman with a puzzled expression, “What were you doing?” she asked, looking around herself more freely now to figure out what kind of creature the woman might’ve been talking about, but she didn’t see anything near her.
Cal paused in putting her phone away. There wasn’t a very good answer she could give without sounding weird. “It’s a game. An app on my phone.” She said. “You, uh, go lookin’ for these things on your phone and you gotta catch it in real time and I’d been lookin’ for one, so, uh, yeah.”
Eilonwy froze where she was, admitedly holding her breath as her eyes swept herself herself, unsure what in the hell a Growlithe was.
Cal swiped her finger across her screen and held her own breath as she ball rocked once, twice, (she didn’t dare blink) three time and clicked. “Yes!” She fist pumped and tapped the info away on her phone. “Okay, proceed on your way.”
“Cal. Cal. I’ve been tracking this god damn Growlithe all across the carnival grounds.”
“Seems like I’m the better trainer if I found it first.” She smirked at Sif. “You can catch it after me.”
Unexpected Guests | Sif && Cal
Sif had disappeared from the carnival grounds as soon as things started to power down, and had only just now returned. It was safe at this time, though, what with most everyone being asleep already. Those who weren’t, well, she hoped they wouldn’t spot her. “Come on.” She murmured softly to her companion as she snuck onto the train, attempting to be as quiet as possible. Sif couldn’t deny the fact that she was anxious, a nervous buzz set into her bones, like a worried hive of bees. When she got to the room she was looking for, she knocked lightly, hoping it’d be enough to catch the attention of the person inside. “Calhoun!” She whispered, pulling the hood of her black jacket down so her face was no longer obscured by shadows. “It’s me. I need you to open the door, quietly, please. It’s important.” Sif glanced around her, listening for anyone other than Calhoun, for footsteps in the hall with her.
Cal’s graveyard shift was finally over and she considered the need for Help Wanted signs as she changed into a pair of shorts. It was too hot for anything besides them and a sports bra so oh fucking well.
Sam was just happy to be off his leash, jumping on her bed and rubbing his face on her mattress. Should he probably be in a kennel? Yes. Does she enforce that? ...No. Interestingly enough, he was a damn goofball without his leash, but on the job he was a good boy - putting the fear of God into anyone who so much as looked at him or Cal the wrong way. What a good boy.
Sam had his head on her stomach while she played her DS when she heard the knock and the very obviously I-did-something tone that was common for Sif.
“Hold on, I’m comin’,” she called so Sif wouldn’t do something ridiculous like break the door down. Whatever Sif had done couldn’t be anything that she hadn’t done before so that’s what cal was prepared for.
Not the goddamn wolf standing right next to Sif.
“What the hell is that?”
Kylo’s eyes glinted before narrowing in challenge as he smirked. “You can try darlin, but I think you’ll find this rooster’s a bit more cunning than the fox..”
She eyed him over, eyebrow raised. "I really don’t wanna embarrass you out here in public. So just let me go my job and follow me to do paperwork.”
“Don’t speak, don’t think, don’t even breathe. There’s a growlithe right there.”
“Hmm nothing to permanent.. “
“And thanks, but no thanks.. I handled it, nothing more to do about it.”
“Aww hell.” She sighed sharply through her nose and shifted her weight to her other foot. “No, we’re filling out paperwork. And you can come quietly or I can drag you like a fox would a doomed rooster.”
“Oh I don’t think they’ll be talking all that much. They thought of some very interesting things while my hand was in some very uncomfortable places.”
“What did you do?”
They had been doing so good. So much for that streak. “Goddammit. Okay. C’mon, follow me to the office.”
“He doubted my abilities.. I’d hate to let someone go not experiencing the whole.. wonder of it all.”
“Listen. I’m short staffed. There is only so much I can do. Can all y’all just cut me some slack and not get us sued?”
“Oh I’m sure they’ll craw out eventually.. But I’m positive they’ve learnt their lesson.”
“It better not have been a guest.”
I love kicking a little ass in the morning.. Always puts a smile on my face.
“.... I’m not gonna hafta clean up your mess am I?”
“Did you know that in 1872, the P.T. Barnum Circus declared it would only play at big venues and decided to travel by train? It was the first circus ever to do that, and we still use their loading techniques today; 144 years later.” Merida said this outloud, gazing out the huge window in the lounge car, speaking to no one in particular. Her steaming mug of tea beside her on the window ledge. Knees curled up under her chin as she watched the world go by, “Pretty cool don’t you think? Like we’re apart of history, or something bigger… that we’re the last ones left.”
Cal wouldn’t admit that she was here to keep an eye on Merida - but that last incident where Merida had gotten herself caught on top of the roof by her clothes and the train had almost taken off with her like that. Cal knew Merida never intentionally got into these sorts of things, but she still needed an eye kept on her.
“Is that right?” Cal said, looking up from her DS. “Last I heard, we are the last ones left that travel the way we do. Or at least the longest running one left. Did you just read that or remember it?”
Laughter, loud and clear, tore from Sif’s throat as she was greeted by an enthusiastic Sam, and a not so enthusiastic Cal. She scratched behind Sam’s ear, then moved to cup his big furry cheeks in her hands, smooching him right on the nose. “At least one of you is happy to see me!” Sif joked, grinning good-naturedly at the woman opposite her who was clearly hungover.
“Hungover from your night of drinking alone?” Sif didn’t think she had to say it, and instead opted for putting enough emphasis on the word alone to make it clear that Cal would in fact be drinking again tonight. With Sif.
“Do not.” She said, holding up a finger. “This headache is raging through my skull and a lecture from you on not bringing you drinking is going to help.”
But she could admit (to herself) that she was happy to see Sif. Even if she was loud and her words rattled painfully through her brain matter that felt more like mush than anything.
