To Apple, Love Taylor

I write this to explain why I’ll be holding back my album, 1989, from the new streaming service, Apple Music. I feel this deserves an explanation because Apple has been and will continue to be one of my best partners in selling music and creating ways for me to connect with my fans. I respect the company and the truly ingenious minds that have created a legacy based on innovation and pushing the right boundaries.

I’m sure you are aware that Apple Music will be offering a free 3 month trial to anyone who signs up for the service. I’m not sure you know that Apple Music will not be paying writers, producers, or artists for those three months. I find it to be shocking, disappointing, and completely unlike this historically progressive and generous company. This is not about me. Thankfully I am on my fifth album and can support myself, my band, crew, and entire management team by playing live shows. This is about the new artist or band that has just released their first single and will not be paid for its success. This is about the young songwriter who just got his or her first cut and thought that the royalties from that would get them out of debt. This is about the producer who works tirelessly to innovate and create, just like the innovators and creators at Apple are pioneering in their field…but will not get paid for a quarter of a year’s worth of plays on his or her songs.

These are not the complaints of a spoiled, petulant child. These are the echoed sentiments of every artist, writer and producer in my social circles who are afraid to speak up publicly because we admire and respect Apple so much. We simply do not respect this particular call.

I realize that Apple is working towards a goal of paid streaming. I think that is beautiful progress. We know how astronomically successful Apple has been and we know that this incredible company has the money to pay artists, writers and producers for the 3 month trial period… even if it is free for the fans trying it out.

Three months is a long time to go unpaid, and it is unfair to ask anyone to work for nothing. I say this with love, reverence, and admiration for everything else Apple has done. I hope that soon I can join them in the progression towards a streaming model that seems fair to those who create this music. I think this could be the platform that gets it right.

But I say to Apple with all due respect, it’s not too late to change this policy and change the minds of those in the music industry who will be deeply and gravely affected by this. We don’t ask you for free iPhones. Please don’t ask us to provide you with our music for no compensation.

The fact that people might say Taylor is “bitching” about 3 month without getting paid is not the point that she is trying to prove. She is sticking up for the little guys that deserve pay for something they have worked day and night for. Growing up I watched my parents work for everything they have but I see that people still have something to say about people’s success. They act like it was handed to those successful people. No it wasn’t. It was hard earned work. I believe people should get a shot at achieving their dream but you can not do those things without support of others.. Nobody should work with out pay. Thankful for people that will stick up for people with dreams. Thank you taylorswift ! This is the reason you will always have my support.

Okay so what happened was that my sister’s girlfriend Katie, who I babysit for all the time, just got a cat who had 2 kittens, born 8 hours apart from each other, the orange one a boy and the white one a girl. she asked me if I wanted one of them (I said yes, obviously) but my mom already has a cat and 3 dogs and we don’t need any other animals over there and my dad just doesn’t want a pet (my parents are divorced) so anyways katie told me she’s keeping the orange one but the other one needs a name and a home. Now, I used to have a little black kitten who Liz Huett (remember liz?!) named “Kitty Underwood” for me until we had to put her down due to a bad case of worms. So I was thinking about that when I thought “Why not have one of Taylor’s dancers or band members name this one too?” So I sent the picture of the kittens to 2 dancers from the red tour, Taeok Lee, who I’ve talked to before and who was so chill, and Clarice Ordaz, who follows me. Taeok responded this morning with the suggestion of naming the girl “Saltine” (he said to name the boy Wilson but the boy was already named) so I text dad and ask if I can take her since I got taeok to name her, which didn’t go so well. The problem is I can’t take care of her by myself all the time since my parents are divorced and I’m only at dad’s house every other week, which is why I think dad doesn’t want me to have the kitten. So when I ask if I can get taylorswift to offer her opinion on the situation, if that would change his mind, and he responds with “you can’t even get her to follow you” well, you can imagine how determined I am about this now. So the kittens have 3 weeks before they can leave their mom which means I have 3 weeks to get this to taylor. Any help would be much appreciated. I understand this is just a kitten and it’s not that big of a deal, but still. any thoughts, taylor? taylorswift

Update: My sister is bugging my dad and me to take the kitten. The other people who are looking at her apparently aren’t the ideal people for a cat to grow up with, and my sister really wants me to take her cause she says she knows I’ll take real good care of her. Dad still isn’t budging; Says it’s a no unless I get taylor to see this…. taylorswift

Update: dad comes up the stairs just now and he goes “they say the worst thing you can do to a cat is declaw it because it’s so painful for them.” So I go “I can teach it not to while she’s young” and he says “you’re at mom’s half the time and I’m working all day. Those cats tear up couches and curtains and everything else.” So I got really sad for a minute cause I started thinking that even if taylorswift does see this it won’t matter.. but then he goes “omg.” And I’m like “what” and he goes “go to Google and look up soft claws nail caps for cats” and I looked it up and they make these things where you slip them on the cat’s nails and they’re like these clear (you can get them in baby blue and hot pink I’m laughing) soft cap things that keep the cats from scratching furniture. So I think since he was telling me about that he’s preparing for taylorswift to see this post…
