Cambodia has lodged another formal protest against Thailand, accusing its neighbour of illegally constructing Buddha statues and installing flagpoles in what Phnom Penh describes as Cambodian territory under Thai occupation. According to Cambodia’s Foreign Ministry, at least 36 Buddha statues and two flagpoles have been erected in border areas of Preah Vihear and Oddar Meanchey provinces, allegedly in violation of a joint statement agreed by the two countries on 27 December 2025. Cambodia said it does not recognise any border changes imposed by force and called on Thailand to honour previous agreements aimed at maintaining peace and stability along the shared frontier. The allegations have not yet been addressed publicly by Thai authorities.
