Sam & Dave's debut album was released on 1 April 1966.
Sam Moore and Dave Prater met in 1961 while both were singing gospel music and began performing gospel music together shortly thereafter. They released a half dozen singles between 1962 and 1964, which brought them to the attention of Atlantic Records, which in turn handed them to Stax Records in Memphis, TN.
Stax producer Jim Stewart used his in-house band, Booker T. & the M.G.s, and relative new songwriters 23-year-old Isaac Hayes and 24-year-old Dave Porter to write songs (along with Booker T. band member Steve Cropper).
The title track, "Hold On, I'm Comin'," was released as a single in March 1966 and topped the Billboard R&B chart (and peaked at #21 on the Hot 100), and the album also hit #1 on the R&B chart (and #45 on the Pop chart).
