feminist (2014);Â when you spend so much time with the folks here at tumblr dot com, i think you kind of forget that in the real world, feminism is still regarded as extreme and has this weird bad connotation to it. we talk about classic feminist literature in my lectures and iâm shocked by how many people disagree with feminist ideals. every single person in my life has this internalized misogyny that they arenât even aware of. thatâs why, for my final photography project, i decided to cover feminism. i utilized an institutional-type wall and two simple continuous profoto lights to create a man-on-the-street vibe and recruited some of the most passionate feminists i know to pose with signs. itâs a simple idea for those of us who are so passionate about feminism, but iâm hoping it will help open the eyes of my classmates who never give these ideas a second thought.
Never in my wildest dreams could Iâve dreamt up this scene.
"FANART IS NOT REAL ART!!!"
Do we need to talk about the relationship between the Renaissance and the Bible
how to make yourself a work of art instead of other people making you into something you might not approve of.

Less âBig Bang Theory,â More Dana Scully: What Itâs Going to Take to Lead More Girls Into Science
This article touches on the profound impact cultural icons have and the lack of icons for women in STEM fields today.
Dana Scully influenced generations of women (including me!). âThe Scully Effectâ inspired women to flock to fields typically dominated by men, like science and law enforcement, because of the bad ass role model Dana Scully was. The actress who played her, Gillian Anderson, knows of the effect her character had.
Anderson responded that sheâs long been aware of the Scully Effect, and has frequently heard from girls âwho were going into the medical world or the science world or the FBI world or other worlds that I reigned, that they were pursuing those pursuits because of the character of Scully.â
Yet Dana Scully is no where to be found now. Where Dana Scully once ruled we now have Penny on The Big Bang Theory who gets played for laughs as a âsilly womanâ among serious male scientists. (Donât even get me started on the treatment of ânerdsâ and âscientistsâ on that show. Just listen to where the laugh track plays. They arenât laughing with Sheldon, they are laughing AT him.) Â
Emily Graslie said it best âThere should be some woman on some show on some channel, I keep searching for her, and I donât think she exists. There is no female equivalent of Brian Cox, Neil DeGrasse Tyson.â
While these men do great things for the image of science in the public eye, there is literally no female version, on scripted programs or otherwise. They arenât there. So Emily, myself, and many others have had enough. Weâve taken matters into our hands.
If the 741,343 views on Emilyâs video on the subject are any indication, I donât think we are the only ones who are fed up.Â

Some day soon we will have actual women scientists and engineers as positive role-models in the media, instead of having to settle for being inspired by fictional characters.Â

Women aged 15-44 are more likely to be maimed or die from male violence than cancer, traffic accidents, and war combined.
Feminist talk at Students For Libertyâs 2013 Austin Regional Conference and why feminism is not outdated (via cuntcastle)
& some women - women of color, trans women, disabled women, poor women - are MUCH more likely to experience violence than white/cis/abled/class privileged women (and marginalized women have less recourse in the legal system to have anything done about the violence done to them.)Â
All women exist in a culture with a specter of violence surrounding them at every turn, but letâs not let aggregate level statistics allow us to believe that we face equal risks.

If only guys were so aggressive towards rapists as they are towards the possibility of a woman not shaving for a month
I am surprised by how much sex I have had in my life that I didnât want to have. Not exactly whatâs considered ârealâ rape, or âdateâ rape, although it is a kind of rape of the spirit - a dishonest portrayal or distortion of my own desire in order to appease another person. I said yes because I felt it was too much trouble to say no. I said yes because I didnât want to have to defend my âno,â qualify it, justify it - deserve it. I said yes because I thought I was so ugly and fat that I should just take sex every time it was offered, because who knew when it would be offered again. I said yes to partners I never wanted in the first place, because to say no at any point after saying yes for so long would make our entire relationship a lie, so I had to keep saying yes in order to keep the ânoâ I felt a secret. That is such a messed-up way to live, such an awful way to love. So these days, I say yes only when I mean yes. It does require some vigilance on my part to make sure I donât just go on sexual automatic pilot and let people do whatever. It forces me to be really honest with myself and others. It makes me remember that loving myself is also about protecting myself and defending my own borders. I say yes to me.

If I could go back in time I would change a lot of things. Itâs funny, being a kid and thinking youâre an adult and thinking that sex is a legitimate way to make people like you.
