Headcanons for Fish Mooney?

She got her name "Fish" after an unfortunate incident at a cannery left her reeking of fish, and the men in Falcone's gang used it to insult and tease her and make her out to be beneath them. However, she decided to reclaim it and make it into a badge of honor she wore proudly to take away their power to demean her with it.

The story she told Liza about her mother being killed by Falcone's men was obviously false, but it was true that she grew up with just her mother in Gotham in a one bedroom apartment and her mother was a prostitute to pay the bills. Growing up in such poverty made Fish always determined that she would carve out a better life for herself than that, and her ambitions led to her becoming both the first woman and the first black person to become an underboss in the Gotham mob.

Along those same lines, she actually doesn't have any particular grievance with Falcone that fueled her revenge. Falcone and Fish genuinely liked and had a mutual respect for each other. He gave her a chance and saw her value despite the heavy racism and sexism of his colleagues. She wants to overthrow him simply because she's a shark who smelled blood in the water with Falcone becoming old and weak. She couldn't and wouldn't stop her own ambitions, even when they meant taking down a man who she respected.

Her favorite movie as a child that she would watch over and over was Sunset Boulevard, and she loved Norma Desmond and wanted that same glamour and dramatic quality for herself. She patterned herself a lot after Norma when crafting her persona.

She first got into the mob by murdering her mother's pimp and taking over as the Madame of the whores in his employ. She needed a place to launder the money she made, and that led her to acquiring the nightclub. She used the money to start buying her way into other criminal activities and extending her influence until she was running the Theater District. She gradually phased out the prostitution as other business ventures became more reliable and safer bets, particularly her protection ring.
