iβve got another verse to write up. but, hereβs the idea, fallen who chose not to continue following satan after the rebellion and the fall. neutral fallen who were essentially forgotten by both sides, since neither would keep them, and were the test dummies for purgatory and then essentially took over and preside over purgatory. fallen who play both sides, for their advantage, yet answer to no one.
adding onto this, if going by show standards, theΒ β angelsΒ β of purgatory with pure grey wings. maybe lighter or darker shades depending on who they work with more often β¦ yet theyβre also translucent. light passes through them. as if theyβre not really there or physical manifestations of them.
often referred to though, derogatorily usually, as double agents by both sides. theyβre not. just adhering to their own standards and really want none of the great war business around them or to even hear about it. probably only a rather small handful compared to heaven and hell, like, itβs not as if they remember them anyways or are even aware of purgatory or its concept. itβs a human madeΒ concept to heaven and hell, which is an entirely wrong assumption. but they usher the souls lost or left behind on earth to purgatory, thatβs their job, though theyβre rather lazy about it sometimes β¦
aziraphale and crowley are not allowed to claim theyβre neutral. that would ruffle some feathers in purgatory. theyβve always and have been neutral since the fall. those two can stick to calling itΒ βΒ our sideΒ β, humanityβs side, whatever. purgatory is somewhat swamped though and up to their ears in their own paperwork, it gets done in a timely manner at least, but you wonβt find an entrance to purgatory easy at all. since theyβre not big on being known or bothered directly, itβs in a dismal little bar called limboΒ in camden thatβs never open during the day and only at odd hours of the night ifΒ they even feel up to opening at all. not to mention that camdenβs one of the more darker boroughs of london.
purgatoryβs caretakers are, arguably, the best at blending into humanity and being on earth. seeing as theyβve been there for a long time without breaksΒ from them. most are the melancholy sorts or theyβre either very ambitious, yet always compounded by their stark realism and the fact they look so goddamn tiredΒ all the time. and also they have a particular dislike for both her and the other guy, as well as heaven and hell in general. not disdain per say, though thereβs some out there like that. they sport both demonic and angelic attributes, to further be the confusing sort they are.
those being of purgatory are immune to hellfire and holy water, seeing as they exist in a medium not of angels and demons, and thatβs such a good, yet confusing, thing for them. no tricks to it, theyβre just built different much like how the original fallen warped themselves into demons and, well, angels are just like that, huh ?Β but theyβre able to change into an animal form (Β theyβre not limited though, ranging from mammals to reptilesΒ ), like demons can, yet their miracles are more borderline angelic. their halos are broken but their wings werenβt damaged like the other fallenβs. not to say they donβt hurt from the plummet to earth but the flames didnβt burn when they were cast out.
again, being the test dummies for purgatory, they feel as if they were saddled with their job and have a great hearty dislike for the place itself but it keeps them busy, doesnβt it ?Β they were all trapped in purgatory for a time before they were utterly forgotten and managed to slip out, and decided to make themselves all indispensable on earth in some shape or form. itβs better than shuffling through humanity like the dead warmed over. they really do prefer to be called free agents, feeling they donβt owe anyone shit, and because they donβt care to take orders from anyone either.
lastly, purgatory itself. while heaven and hell are built like corporations nowadays . . . purgatory works as more of a coalition, democracy even. no archangels telling you what to do or princes, dukes, etc. keeping everyone in line by force or fear. just about a hundred or so voices that, sometimes, spend more time debating than actually getting anything done. no defacto leader, really, theyβre an independent lot but if they have to have a specific voice speak for them, so be it when they must ( but howβs that to happen when heaven and hellβs forgotten them, hm ? ). rewards and punishments are doled out with limits, no unfortunate deaths or kangaroo trials, and they wonβt even mention it if someone doesnβt do their work or lies or goes native. no point to that. and heaven nor hell should expect much cooperation from purgatory.Β you fuck right off now, go on, shoo. how did you even get here anyways ?Β are you lost ??
and itβs a somewhat dreary place, purgatory is. got the little office section that looks like any other human office where all the lost souls are processed before let out in their temporary resting place. yet since they house a lot of lost souls ( with chances for them to either go to heaven or hell, little tests that they preside over and tally up, as humans are such complicated creaturesΒ ), itβs a city. large and impeccable but so dreary. overcast and light to heavily foggy all the time ( rare are the days they see sun in purgatory ) and depending on the season, it snows more than anything.Β
itβs like melancholy personified and if youβre not tired by the time you take ten steps into purgatory, then thereβs something wrong with you.Β
the city is endless, personalized to the lost soulβs preference, reflects even the time they died in to their eyes. apartments, lots of them, some suburbs here and there. schools too, for those young souls. tedious, utterly boring schooling. and thereβs some monuments but theyβre not up to snuff to heavenβs standards of glorious architecture ( think the grand kugel and oz park or the fork and fallen angel square and the hand of the desert ). thereβs places where purgatory seems to be grimy and disgusting and rotting too. truly the middle road between heaven and hell.
