GO Rom Com Spotlight: @crowleyisms
The wonderful @crowleyisms (also horrorimus on twitter) has claimed Mr. and Mrs. Smith to adapt for Good Omens in the Good Omens Rom Com Event.
For reference, here’s a little background about the source material!
About Mr. and Mrs. Smith: John (Brad Pitt) and Jane Smith (Angelina Jolie), a couple in a stagnating marriage, live a deceptively mundane existence. However, each has been hiding a secret from the other: they are assassins working for adversarial agencies. When they are both assigned to kill the same target, Benjamin Danz (Adam Brody), the truth comes to the surface. Finally free from their cover stories, they discover that they have been assigned to kill each other, sparking a series of explosive attacks.
We spent some time chatting about how the adaptation is coming so far, as well as future plans for it! Now, get to know @crowleyisms a little better!
goromcom: Here is the first geting to know you bit: When you open a Tumblr chat with someone you haven't chatted to before, Tumblr tells you two things they post about. Tumblr reports that you post "about #grow better (asks) and #apocaqueue" Those are ADORABLE tags for your asks and your queue!!
crowleyisms: Thank you! Glad you enjoy those two tags that I came up with. I try to be clever with my tagging system the best I can. It makes it all the more fun to tag the things I share over here.
goromcom: You chose to adapt Mr. and Mrs. Smith as your rom com. Has this play been a favorite of yours, or is there some other reason you chose it?
crowleyisms: Mr. and Mrs. Smith was one of my favorite movies from what I remember of it. I’m definitely going to have to take the time to sit down and watch it once more to get a better feel than what I remember from watching it in the past and reading over a synopsis again. But I just love the idea of a married couple not knowing they work for rivaling contractors to kill people and then finding out and at first trying to ruin each other only to come together in the end and get the spark back. I think that the basic idea, more or less, is a great idea to apply to Good Omens. And I maybe have a soft spot or Angelina Jolie too.
goromcom: I agree, Angelina Jolie is lovely.
What's your favorite moment of Mr. and Mrs. Smith, and are you looking forward to presenting it in your adaptation? Any loose plans for that scene that you can share?
crowleyisms: I think one of my favorite scenes is the house fight scene between the couple. I always thought it was funny once they kinda realized who exactly each other was and how the bullets begin to fly and then the physicality of using items against each other kind of thing. I don’t know, just found it rather amusing, quite honestly. But I’m hoping to recreate the classic Mr. and Mrs. Smith movie poster that I’m sure everyone knows by now and has done some variation of but my own version and possibly recreate a drawing of a scene or two with my own ideas sprinkled in.
goromcom: Do you plan to stick very closely to the story beats of the original movie, or make bigger changes?
crowleyisms: It’s probably going to be a weird combination of trying to stick to some of the beats of the original movie and making some bigger changes to make it fit. Granted I’m an artist and I’m going to be trying to draw a few things, possibly write little snippets to go along with the drawings to fit with the movie I choose, so it’s going to be a bit of a weird frankensteining of various elements. But however, it turns out I hope people will enjoy what I have to offer none the less!
goromcom: That’s great, though! A real multi-media work, and I’m here for it.
What's an interesting decision you've made in your planning so far--a notable casting decision, a changing of venue, or some other plan you have to paint Good Omens all over your rom com?
crowleyisms: Interesting decision making, huh? Well, I don’t think I’ve gotten that far in the process with what I might want to draw out that would be too entirely drastic. I have to think of how I want to situate our favorite angel and demon and who would be who and all that. So I don’t believe I’ll have any earth-shattering choices but there might be some personal preference and headcanon-esque things involved depending on the scene or two I choose to follow with my poster idea. Just have to wait and see! But I’m rather excited to give this a go overall. What a lovely idea.
goromcom: I am blatantly stealing this last question from The Good Place: The Podcast, but here goes: Tell me something "good". It can be something big or small. It can be a charity you think is doing good work, or you can talk about how great your pet is.
crowleyisms: I have two lovely pets! One is a little old man dachshund who is my snuggle buddy. Had him since forever. And then the other is a big dopey young man bloodhound who is all sorts of fun. Loves to play. Lots of slobber though. But they are both very good boys and I love them with my entire being.
goromcom: They sound like VERY good boys! 13/10 on weratedogs kind of boys. :)
Keep watching for the GO take on Mr. and Mrs. Smith, art and text combined! I can’t wait to see how it turns out.
