Welcome to the 2013 Season of Robotics!

Yesterday marked the beginning of our 2013 season of robotics! This year's game is called Ultimate Accent. 

Game Description

Ultimate Accent is a game of Ultimate Frisbee played by two alliances, with three robots each. Each alliance wil compete to score as many discs into their goals as they can during a two minute and 15 second match. The higher the goal, the more points the alliance receives. 

The match begins with a 15 second Autonomous Period where the robots are to operate without driver inputs. Any discs scored during this period are worth double the original points. After the initial 15 seconds, the drivers can control the robot and try to maximize their alliance score by scoring as many goals as possible.

As the match ends, the robots are to attempt to climb up the pyramids located  near the middle of the field. Each robot earns points based on how high it climbs.

First Meeting Follow Up

Today we had our first meeting of the year (only the veterans) to see what we can improve upon and what we loved from the previous year

Are you a member and can your parent's help and be our ROBOPARENTS? in the past our roboparents have done the following:

Drive robot and team members to and from events

Be mentors in various departments such as programming and construction. This would involve coming into the shop during build season and guiding us through any problems we may have.

Be supervisors for any trips that we may attend

Help out buying/distributing (you will get reimbursed) food during Regionals and when we are traveling

Scout out potential sponsors (if your parents work for big companies)

Act as general support for the team!

WHAT'S PR? PUBLIC RELATION BROO :)

The Public Relations department of our team deals with sharing the experience and values of our team to the world around us. The department works with schools, other teams and the public in general and sets up events to further the impact of science and technology around our community. Public Relations is also responsible for creating and maintaining relationships with sponsors, mentors and parents whose support is a vital part of our team. A branch of the department, known as media, deals with management of the team website and the production of publicity materials such as t-shirts, bracelets, brochures and business cards.

Miuki - Senior '12 - Member of Public Relations and Web Master Miuki is a senior who is returning for her third season on the team! She joined robotics because she thought that the robots were cool but what made her stay was the fact that everyone on the team has became her second family. In her free time, Miuki enjoys reading, drawing, and listening to musical compositions such as Vivaldi's Spring.

Jamie - Junior '13 - Member of Public Relations Jamie is currently a junior, and joined in the beginning of her second year of high school. She wishes to improve on her communication and negotiating skills by being in a team and spending more time interacting with other people outside of school. When she isn't worrying about her future, she's an avid fan of K-Pop, enjoys writing or reading fiction, constantly watches politics or movies, and tries to listen to music at any available chance. Reyna - Sophomore '14 - Member of Public Relations Reyna is currently a sophomore. She joined the robotics team this year because she knew nothing about robots, but really wanted to learn about them. Reyna has also been able to improve her writing skills through Public Relations. She hopes to become a writer, editor, animator, sound editor or a chocolate taster when she's older. Reyna also loves to read in trees, talk to herself in different accents and skip down hallways. Juliet E. - Junior '13 - Member of Public Relations Juliet is the FeMaidens' photographer-in-chief. She started out as a freshman on construction because she liked making things, but decided to make the switch to PR/Media this year in order to focus on her photography (no pun intended). In her spare time, Juliet enjoys playing guitar, learning new photographic techniques, blogging, and cutting up her tee shirts. Sadia - Sophomore '14 - Member of Public Relations This is Sadia's first year in Robotics and she loves it so much already. She enjoys listening to rock music and partaking in photography during her free time. In middle school she was part of her school's lego robotics and enjoyed it a lot. She looks forward to getting familiar with the whole team and helping out as much as she can.

Construction Crew

The Construction Department is responsible for actually building the robot for competitions. This department works closely together in order to design, plan and create the robot. Starting with raw materials, the construction department has to machine all the parts before putting them together to get a functioning robot.

Amy - Junior '13 - Member of Construction Amy is currently in her third year of high school and the FeMaidens and is looking forward to both. She can't wait to start the new season of robotics and plans to stay with the team until graduation.

Shella - Junior '13 - Member of Construction Shella is currently a junior and this is her second year with the team. She is nonathletic but to make up for her inability to join a sports team, she joined the FeMaidens. She wishes to find something she can dedicate herself to by joining the team and hopes to improve her socializing skills by bonding with the members. With the knowledge she gains through her time on the team, she plans to major in genetics. In her spare time, she likes to go on tumblr, sketch, and listen to music. Ashley - Sophomore '14 - Member of Construction Ashley is a sophomore who thought working with robots was very cool. So she joined the FeMaidens and she found out that it wasn't just cool, but also very fun. Ashley enjoys watching anime and playing games. In the future, she plans to have a career in engineering. Sarah - Freshmen '15 - Member of Construction Sarah likes to read a lot. While not reading, she usually listens to music or watch anime. Grace - Freshmen '15 - Member of Construction Grace is a freshman who joined Robotics because she always thought it was a cool thing that looked fun and it is, despite the fact that there are tons of things to do. She loves to build things and to work with tools. Grace plans to stay until graduation and she is really psyched to build a robot this year because it will be her first time. She also really love to watch horror movies with blood and gore, as well as reading manga, watching anime, and listening to music.

Makiko - Freshmen '15 - Member of Construction Makiko is currently a freshman. This is her first year being in the Fe Maidens. Since this is her first time working with robots, she has found the learning experience to be very new and exciting. She also enjoys going on the computer, reading, and hanging out with friends. She hopes to have even more fun working with friends and robots alike. Lara - Sophomore '14 - Member of Construction Lara is a sophomore who joined the Fe Maidens to find the "spark" of her school life that she couldn't find in her freshman year. Due to being timid and vertically challenged, she has always been treated like a child. However, she hopes to be taken seriously with the FeMaidens, and given a challenge. In her spare time, Lara enjoys listening to music (especially of the Korean pop variety) and cooking. Though far-fetched, her dream is to own a multicultural cafe/bakery/restaurant.

Rockella - Freshmen '15 - Member of Construction Rockella is a a freshman. She loves listening to classic rock while she goes through life. Ever since she was young she would fiddle with broken objects, and attempt to fix them; if not properly, then with duct-tape. She thinks robotics is alot of fun, as well as an intelectual challenge. Its also a great place to make friends outside of your grade level. She will watch any movie with Leonardo Dicaprio in it.

Ashley L. - Freshmen '15 - Member of Construction Ashley is a freshman who is always super excited to work with robots. She thinks power tools are awesome and she loves to use them. Ashley likes to play video games and wants to work with robots in the future. Joana - Freshmen '15 - Member of Construction Joana is a freshman who joined robotics in the beginning of the year because she wanted to try something new. Over the past few months, she has learned many new things like how to use the tools in the shop. It has been a postive experience so far and she has become close to her teammates. She hopes to continue to be on the team throughout her high school and enjoy alot more experiences.

Sabrina - Freshmen '15 - Member of Construction Sabrina is currently a freshmen and likes to watch anime and drama in her free time. She also likes to talk with her friends and hangs out with them any chance she could find. Sabrina joined Robotics because she thought building robots would be fun and cool and she was eager to learn more about robots. In the future, Sabrina hopes to become and engineer.

Department Directors

The department directors collaborate to ensure that plans are executed efficiently and smoothly within their department and in the team. They define goals, set deadlines, organize events, and make sure that everything is completed in a timely fashion.

Nicole - Senior '12 - Captain Nicole is currently a Senior. She has been a member of the Fe Maidens since her freshman year. She joined in hopes of learning all about electronics, programming and how both work and has learned not only that, but far more. She hopes to pursue a technological career in the future.

Sonia - Junior '13 - Co-Captain Sonia joined the robotics team during her freshman year after she saw what a positive influence it had on her brother during his high school years. She enjoys reading Harry Potter, watching Tim Burton movies, and spending time with friends and family. Over the last few months, she has become very close with her teammates and considers them her extended family.

Amy (aka Shu Hui) - Senior '12 - Head of Construction Amy is a senior who has been on the teams since her freshman year. On her spare time, she enjoys reading, drawing, jogging and meddling with pieces of machinery. She joined robotics because of her interest in technology and the desire for a new challenge. Robotics is a great way for her to learn to manage her schedule and interact with those around her.

Francesca - Senior '12 - Head of Public Relations Francesca is currently a senior and has been part of the robotics team since Freshman year. As the PR director for the team, Francesca has been able to work on her public speaking skills as well as learn about robotics in general. In her spare time, Francesca likes to paint, read and volunteer at her local animal shelter.

Juliet - Junior '13 - Head of Programming Juliet is currently a junior. This is her second year on the team and she's very excited to learn more about everything there is to programming. She hopes to pursue a career in computer engineering or programming. Juliet's hobbies include writing, drawing, and learning about coding, and she intends to make a side career out of writing fantasy and sci-fi novels. A budding novelist, she hopes to publish (if not then at least finish) a novel before she graduates from Bronx Science.

Nadya - Sophomore '14 - Head of Electronics Nadya is currently a sophomore. She has loved robotics for as long as she can remember, and when she saw that Bronx Science had a robotics team, she immediately wanted to join. Although she joined only to learn more about programming, she ended up studying all other facets of robot-building. In her free time, Nadya likes to explore all mediums of crafts from crocheting to sketching.

2012 FIRST Robotics Game: REBOUND RUMBLE

This year's game is Rebound Rumble and is played on a 27 feet by 54 feet field. The object of the game is to get as many basketballs into any of the four hoops (placed at different heights) before the end of the match. At the end of a match, robots on the same alliance can put up to all three of their robots on their alliance Bridge. There is also the option of having one robot from each alliance try to balance the Coopertition Bridge. There are two alliances, Red Alliance and BLue Alliance. Both alliances are made up of three FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) teams. Matches are 2 minutes and 15 seconds long. The matches usually begin with a 15 second autonomous period but it has been replaced by a Hybrid period for this year's game. In Hybrid, one human player from each alliance can control their team's robot by using the Microsoft Kinect and trying to score three extra points before the teleoperated period begins. The teleoperated period lasts for the remaining 2 minutes and human players drive the robots. Extra points will also be rewarded if the robots can balance the Bridges at the end of the match.
