Pride 2021: Stormé Delarverie

Drag king Stormé DeLarverie was considered the mother of New York’s queer community for many decades.

Armed with a pistol, they worked as a bouncer at lesbian bars around New York into their 80s, as well as using their talent as a singer to raise money for people living with HIV/AIDS, and women and children suffering domestic violence.

While describing themself as “a stone cold woman”, Stormé embraced an ambiguous gender presentation, saying: “People used to ask me if I preferred being called he or she. I said, ‘Whatever makes you comfortable’.”

Stormé was with their partner Diana for 26 years, and after Diana’s death, carried her photo in their wallet for the rest of their life.
