Should You Stop Supporting Companies with “Problematic Beliefs”?
You might have heard that Chick-Fil-A is a pretty homophobic company. I’ve seen it being discussed more recently. Honestly, I thought this was more common knowledge. My whole family has been avoiding Chick-Fil-A my whole life. I am 16 years old, and I’ve never eaten there. We’ve also been avoiding Hobby Lobby my whole life because of their beliefs over abortion.
But as an activist, should you stop going to these brands?
The answer lies in your personal beliefs. Personally, I don’t enjoy giving my money that I know are incredibly problematic. I’m a liberal living in a conservative town. As you can imagine, my classmates and I don’t share the same beliefs. The companies in my town are also like this.
My personal rule system with it is to avoid companies that are loud and proud of their “problematic beliefs” (like Chick-Fil-A and Hobby Lobby).

Update Time!
Hey guys! I just wanted to say that I am returning to this blog! I have been missing my creative outlet! I’ll update this blog tomorrow.
Can a Woman be a Feminist and Still Enjoy Traditional “Girl” Things?
Growing up, people always assumed I was a straight girl who would marry a man and give up my education. I never understood why until I turned 12 and asked one of my friends who said something I’ll never forget:
“Well, you just kind of… look like you could be a trophy wife”
I was 12 years old and didn’t really know what that meant. So I went home and asked my mom. She asked why I cared what a trophy wife and I told my mom what my friend said. I didn’t really understand why mom appeared appalled. She told me what my friend said was untrue but not to worry about it. I still had no idea what she said meant.
So, being a young child, I googled it. Then I was personally offended. I couldn’t figure out how someone could assume I was just going to give up all my ambitions because I fell in love.
Then, when I thought about it, I realized that my room is pink. I had long hair, I enjoyed looking at makeup, I enjoyed traditional “girly” things. So, I guess I could see how people would think that.
But yet again, I couldn’t. I was an honor roll student (I was still 12, so I still wasn't in advanced classes), I had goals and dreams. None of them were solely about getting married. Now, I still think getting married one day would be nice, but my goals are much more career oriented.
So while I do enjoy doing makeup and my favorite colors are “girly”, I still love flowers, and my favorite genre of movies in rom-coms, I love science. I am extremely passionate about science. In fact, it’s what I would like to do with my life. I want to be an optometrist. I want to have a career.
I fully support women who choose to become housewives, but that is not for me. I don’t hold my tongue very well, I have a very big personality, and I just don’t want to be a housewife. I don’t particularly want children (another crime against that fact that I can have children apparently).
However, these feelings tied into my coming out as bisexual. I felt as though people wouldn’t believe me because I didn’t “look” gay. In fact, the absolutely first person I told about my sexuality told me I just wanted attention.
So, I spent three years in the closet, not because I was afraid of being kicked out, but out of fear of no one believing me. I guess I still blame that friend a little bit for giving me that idea.
So sure, people call me a lipstick lesbian, but honestly I’m ok with that. For a while, I was in a relationship with a boy who was ok with my ambition. He was ambitious too, and didn’t try to contain my dreams. I really appreciate him.
The other issue with this is the women who shame women like me. Women who like both traditional things that are meant for girls, but also who enjoy science. Women who scold me for not caring about if I can attract a husband, and the women who tell me that by wearing makeup, I am putting the feminist movement back. Both women are in the wrong.
It is, in my opinion, wrong to tell someone that because they enjoy x, they can not enjoy a, b, or c. They can only enjoy y and z.
It’s all about pursuing what you want. Don’t let someone tell you that what you like to do is wrong (unless you’re into murdering people or stuff up that alley). I’m still so glad that I grew up with great examples of what I could be when I grew up. My mom has more education than my father and that’s ok. My father is in my corner and wants me to become educated. Both of my parents support my goals.
If you don’t have anyone, I can be your person. I will support your goals and dreams. Because as women, and as people, that should be what we are striving for.
Why the Attitude of “School is Unimportant” Bothers Me
Look, I get it. Getting up at 5 am to get on a bus, to then sit in classes, to return home only to find yourself with hours of work isn’t ideal. However, in my opinion, many people just need to get over it.
This opinion piece is not directed at people with mental disorders that hinder their performance in school. Trust me, I have the utmost respect for those people. You might not believe me, but I used to be that person. Way back in middle school, I fought with my demons. I fought extreme anxiety, depression, and horrible eating habits. I was at the peak age where people are insecure so they make you insecure and it becomes a vicious cycle. I failed so many things and ultimately, missed out on a lot of foundational education I ended up needing.
This piece also only speaks to a high school level of education. The college argument is completely different, and I will tackle it another day.
However, if you do not struggle with these horrendous thoughts, I would kindly like to share this message with you. School is important, despite the increasing attitude of people who don’t believe so. If you are privileged enough to receive a free high school education, why would you not take it?
Some might argue that I am biased. I could be, but so is everyone (everyone holds biases and if you don’t believe so, you are fooling yourself). Sure, I am an honors and AP student. I must LOVE school.
So, funny thing is, I don’t actually hate school. That could be due to the fact that I enjoy a good challenge. Or maybe I am appreciative for the fact that I am privileged enough to receive an education.
But even if you don’t enjoy challenges, school could be fine. Don’t take as hard of classes, and take classes you enjoy. That’s what I do, I just happen to enjoy academia.
Before you make the claim of “school doesn’t measure intelligence, it measures memorization”, you should analyze what memorization really implies. Memorization is a step towards true knowledge of a subject. Personally, I do believe to a certain extent school does measure intelligence, but not in a traditional way (and in no way am I talking about standardized testing).
I think school also measures your work ethic. Honestly, if you can’t put an hour everyday towards school, how the hell are you going to hold a job? Sure, that sounds awful, but I can’t help but point out that jobs (no matter what job you have!) will require you to put some time into it. Rarely will you get a well paying job that you clock into and clock out of and between those two times you work and after you don’t even think about it.
It also bothers me when major influencers hold this attitude as many viewers have young impressionable audiences. One controversial figure who I half agree with is James Charles. Despite blowing up, James still finished high school. While I don’t agree with his opinion over college, I must say that I appreciate him not completely writing of high school.
And I’m not even talking about influencers who dropout of high school, but do not present it as the only logical option. Take Emma Chamberlain for example. She dropped out, but never presents it as your only option. While I can never imagine myself dropping out, I can respect this belief held by others.
This is really solely direct to the smart ass kids who make people like me, people who enjoy school and promote it, look like evil villains. People who argue that school rots your brain and that there is no value of education. While a few youtubers do come to mind, I would prefer not to give them that promo.
So, this rant turned long. I am sorry for that. There is a reason though. I am extremely passionate about education. I encourage you all to do your own research and draw your own conclusions about your education, not simply listen to the whole “school has no value” attitude presented by some influencers.
(I also am not claiming that the school system is flawless, it is not.)
Addressing my Anxieties About Giving Up Waste
Hello! If you read my blog before I took a break, I have been trying to be more eco friendly. I thought giving up plastic straws was going to be hard, but they really weren’t. I usually keep metal straws in every one of my bags that I switch between. Or, you could not use straws at all, but sometimes you just want one.
But it's not just plastic straws. I have switched to reusable bags for groceries. I have been trying to use cloth napkins and I carry my Yeti in my car. I stopped using plastic bags and I switched to reusable containers. These all sound like little inconveniences in my life, but they absolutely are not.
Any time I feel anything close to annoyance about the inconvenience, I remember the inconvenience about a giant wad of plastic in the middle of the ocean or the video of the sea turtle with a straw up its nose.
So, I encourage you to reduce your waste and reduce the amount of plastic you use.
Sorry
Hi guys, I am so sorry for disappearing on you! I needed to keep my mental health in check because it has been very crazy! I have been handling a nervous breakdown, however I plan to write many more blog posts! I also am writing small articles and stories that I will link on to this blog. Thank you so much for sticking it out with me. I really appreciate it.
Best Feminist Movies of 2018
These posts can be boring, but I will continue to post these through the first week of 2019. This year was not amazing for feminists, however we can claim some amazing moments! Here is a list of the best feminist movies of 2018!
1. A Kid Like Jake- This movie opened up the discussion of transgender children, not to mention the amazing actors,
2. Bohemian Rhapsody- Freddie Mercury was an iconic bisexual man. If you are unaware, he sadly died of AIDS in the early 90′s. The movie shows gay men in a refreshingly positive light.
3. If Beale Street Could Talk- do I really need to explain this? Obama likes it.
4. Eighth Grade- The movie really shows the true struggles of the early years of being a teenager.
5. Black Panther- Besides being an amazing movie, the movie is incredibly diverse and really gave us some good representation.
6. Crazy Rich Asians- Just like Black Panther, this movie has incredibly amounts of diversity and gave us good representation! (Not feminist, however bonus point, it is incredibly similar to the book!)
7. The Hate U Give- An amazing movie that shows an (unfortunately) realistic situation and the media firestorm that ensues. (It’s also an amazing book)
There are many, many more, but in my opinion, these are just the best. I hope you guys have had a good 2018, and I hope your 2019 goes even better.
How to Stay Safe at Parties
If So, it’s New Years Eve, which means parties. Unfortunately, parties can also mean the possibility of you being put in to dangerous situations. Please use these tips so you can ensure your safety!
1. Always stay with your friends.
2. Figure out how you will get home prior to going out + make a plan B
3. Make sure your phone is charged!
4. Drink in moderation!
5. Do not accept drinks you did not watch being poured. Never abandon your drink. Do not turn your head from your drink.
6. If you know someone has been drinking, do not get in a car with them and prevent them from driving.
7. If you do not want to participate in certain party games or such, you ALWAYS have the right to say no.
8. If you are faced with an aggressive confrontation, walk away and do not engage.
IN CASE OF AN EMERGENCY:
If your friend is not breathing, begin CPR and call 911.
If your friend has been assaulted, take them to the nearest emergency service location (most likely a hospital). If you believe your friend has been roofied, bring their drink for testing.
If your friend is unconscious, lay them on their side in order to lower the risk of them vomiting. DO NOT LEAVE YOUR UNCONSCIOUS FRIEND ALONE.
7 Easy Ways to be Environmentally Friendly
I know, being environmentally friendly is something we all say we want to do, but in execution, we all fall a little short. However there are still very simple life changes you can make in order to become more environmentally friendly.
1. Use reusable straws instead of plastic ones. This is a fairly common thing now! In fact some places have completely outlawed plastic straws and many businesses have stopped using plastic straws. Many people complain about paper straws, and personally, I have the same complaints. I think they get all soggy in your mouth, and they start to break down while you use them. So, I would strongly recommend using metal ones (like these ones https://amzn.to/2QWOwkk ) or silicone ones (like these ones https://amzn.to/2RmuU8p ). I would just recommend that you get straws that have a cleaning brush and a carrying case.
2. Use a reusable water bottle instead of plastic ones. This switch can actually financially benefit you in the long run! Any water bottle will do, but I think metal ones are just better. Now, I’m not saying you have to buy a Hydro Flask, I’m just going to leave a link because they are honestly nice water bottles! (https://amzn.to/2LFERbN )
3. Use a reusable coffee cup! This one could be trickier, but if you can manage to do so, you should! Yetis are pretty nice coffee cups, but this one is a cheaper option ( https://amzn.to/2EZ1jMs )
4. Use reusable grocery bags! These are super easy. Many local grocery stores have their own bags but here are some cute ones ( https://amzn.to/2Ti6k5U ). Just stick them in your car and leave them there. Then you never forget them!
5. Use dryer balls instead of dryer sheets. This will eventually save you money, as you don’t need to be constantly be repurchasing dryer sheets! ( Here are some cute ones: https://amzn.to/2EUARD1 )
6. Compost! This is amazing for the environment and then you are not creating waste. I will upload a blog post about composting soon, but in the mean time you should Google it and begin composting!
7. Recycle! Its almost 2019, how could you not recycle?
Woman of the Week #1, Michelle Obama
I mean, we all know who she is. Michelle Obama is a feminist icon! She is an activist, author, and role model for children everywhere! She is generally admired by many, many people. She is widely considered t be one of the best first ladies, ever. So, she was naturally my first choice for woman of the week! I hope you’re ready for the Michelle Obama content I have scheduled for this week!
This image is literally perfect for this blog
Woman of the Week
I plan to do a series on this blog called woman of the week. I will choose an amazing woman to highlight on my blog for a week. I will announce each woman every Sunday, and I will focus on them every day of that week. It might just be a post about how much I love them, why their awesome, a picture of them, or a quote. I hope you enjoy this series, as I am very excited to create this series! The first woman will be up tomorrow, December 30th, 2018.
