can you believe female hysteria was considered like an actual medical thing… god
mary louise moneybags in 1880: im horny all the time and also sad and i feel dissatisfied with my shitty life i dont want kids i hate my dad and my husband
dr mis o’geny: i diagnose you with WOMAN
fun fact if you’re a man you’re not allowed to laugh at this joke bcus i don’t go a day without hearing about how girls are all overemotional unstable and crazy so you all still think like this you’ve just gotten better at phrasing it in a way that doesnt seem like bullshit at first glance
sirens wouldn’t work on lesbians bc they’d be serenading us and we’d be like ‘oh she just means it as a friend! she’s being nice :)’
Everyone has these amazing Love, Simon stories. The theater applauds. People stand up and cheer. People shout out loud. My experience was…nothing like that.
I live in a conservative town. We were on spring break. There are max 8 people in the theater. During the movie, everyone was silent. All you could hear were the girls behind me crying and laughing, the quiet gasps from the male and female couple in front of me, my friends whispered words under their breath, and my own quiet sobbing into my glove. The movie ends. The credits roll. We all get out of our seats. Someone holds the door for me, I hold it for someone else. We all make eye contact with each other at some point and we come to an unspoken agreement. They weren’t there, I wasn’t there, we saw no one we knew. Except we all knew each other, I knew everyone’s names and they knew mine. But the fear in their eyes, that gave way to understanding, acceptance, agreement and camaraderie, made us all silently promise in that split second of eye contact to take a vow of silence. We held the door for each other. Nodded at each other. We walked away to our respective cars. We said nothing.
I haven’t given away any of their names. I haven’t asked them about it either. But a couple of them I’ve seen since. One, a person I have never talked to in my life, saw me and we nodded at each other in recognition. It’s no empowering story. It isn’t loud or great or revolutionary. But I have some new people watching my back. And I’m watching theirs. Because in the end, we are all the same, with the same secret. And even in such a conservative town, we are not alone.
Ivan the Terrible and His Son Ivan on November 16, 1581
Ilya Repin
This painting depicts the historical 16th century story of Ivan the Terrible mortally wounding his son in Ivan in a fit of rage. By far the most psychologically intense of Repin’s paintings, the Emperor’s face is fraught with terror, as his son lay quietly dying in his arms, blood dripping down the side of his face.

Oh. My. God. I just found out about this movie called “In Between” which follows the lives of three strong, independent Palestinian women. And get this: one of the main characters is an ARAB LESBIAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I’ll repeat it in case you didn’t hear me scream: THERE IS A MOVIE ABOUT AN ARAB LESBIAN!!!!!!!!
And not only is this the first Arab movie I know of that focuses (and I’m gonna say it again) on ARAB LESBIANS!!!! the actress herself is gay in real life and is an awesome woman who has been known for her art and work before. Her name is Sana Jammalieh and in case you don’t know her, I strongly suggest you check her out.
Representation Matters!

This is how lesbian arguments usually play out
Y'all realize poor eyesight (aka needing glasses) is an actual disability right?
Its simply one our society has normalized and made accommodations for. Its one you can function with at virtually no impairment for most because its easy to get glasses/contacts and enough people need them that we’re taken into account.
People laugh at the concept of needing glasses being a disability, but that’s because its become the standard to see disabilities only as things extremely difficult and unbearable to live with, or things that aren’t for “normal people.”
That’s wrong. How life is for people with glasses is how life should be for people with any other kind of disability - normalized, unstigmatized, unquestioned, accommodated, with resources made available.
It should be just as easy for someone in a wheelchair to have access to things that make life functionally indifferent from people without wheelchairs - just like living with glasses is for most.
Society needs a redefinition of disability - or, scratch that, they need reorienting on what “disabled” looks like and how life should be for disabled people. Being disabled isn’t defined by its hardships - it is a state of being that is unfortunately 99% accompanied by ridiculous hardships because society refuses to accommodate and still thinks they don’t have to because to them, its a simple fact that “being disabled is hard.” Why should they change?
A disability is something that leaves you at a disadvantage, in pain, non functional, etc. without some sort of aid.
Without glasses I could not drive or work, and it would severely impair my ability to even be social. You know what else does that? My other disabilities that are considered “real disabilities.”
You know what aid I have ease of access for? The thing not considered a disability. And I’d bet money that’s a direct reason why.
