"Opera singers... this is obviously not how you sing opera exactly, but the ability to even somewhat approximate these sounds is exactly what's missing from your technique.
Imitate this for 5 minutes in your practice and I assure you you'll be in better voice after.
Crazy how opera singers have this paranoia about ever making a sound with a high larynx as a developmental tool when these girls with extremely high laryngeal positions are making sound with very manageable subglottic pressure, tons of ring and core, easy and consistent sound over the span of octaves, flexible registration and can outproject most opera singers I know while expending no apparent effort...
In general, yes the larynx must be somewhat low for traditional operatic singing, but that is only IN GENERAL.
In development, if you only ever permit yourself to make vocal sounds that originate from a low larynx or what you THINK a low larynx is (you are also almost definitely not lowering your larynx correctly in the first place if you're fixated on lowering your larynx), you will very likely struggle to find many dozens of various desirable effects, technically and expressively, that are necessary for truly exceptional operatic singing.
Direct, mechanical adjustment is very difficult to find.
But you know what's OBVIOUS!!!
The SOUND in your IMAGINATION.
You adjust the mechanism by adjusting the imagination of the sound you want to make.
To me those sounds are exceptionally beautiful.
They aren't exactly like "beautiful" operatic singing, but equally beautiful in their own right.
To me tonal beauty is clear, harmonically rich, intense, and MOST IMPORTANTLY...
FREE & HUMAN SOUNDING & BORN FROM AN UNOBSTRUCTED DESIRE TO EXPRESS!
And if your operatic singing does not sound free or human or inseparable from immediate expression, your "round elegant tones" are not beautiful... they're lifeless and meaningless.
And I guess that's the thing...some of us find beauty in sound that is true and liberated and real, and others find beauty in a sound that is false and controlled and disingenuous...a reflection of the world indeed."
