What to Consider Before Your Next Major Outdoor Home Improvement Project
Maybe you're a handy person who loves DIY projects, or maybe you've been watching a lot of HGTV. The end of winter may have inspired you to roll up your sleeves and get some outdoor work done, or you could have seen something outside of your neighbor's home that you would like to emulate. Either way, you've been bitten by the outdoor home décor bug and you're ready to make some changes!
You could be thinking about adding a new fence or some bushes, or you could be interested in adding some stainless steel railings to your porch to make it safer and more stylish. Regardless of whether you're planning on doing the work yourself or having a professional contractor handle it, there are some things we think you should keep in mind before starting your newest outdoor home improvement project.
Keep your HOA and zoning laws in mind
At Fence Center, we've heard it a million times before – a client has fallen in love with a particular kind of fence or building material, or maybe they've discovered a new kind of exotic plant that they want to cultivate. They go to the trouble of purchasing and installing the new addition to their outdoor décor. Then they get an angry letter from their home owner's association or a zoning board telling them to take down everything they've done. Double-check with your HOA or your town's zoning board before doing any major work, in order to ensure that you aren't in violation of any regulations.
Take time to test your soil
If you're going to be doing any kind of landscaping, soil testing is essential. This is something a lot of people who are new to gardening forget to do, which could mean that they're wasting weeks and even months struggling to grow plants in harsh soil. A test will pinpoint everything your soil could possibly need, such as more nutrients and water, or anything that healthy plants will need to thrive. Make sure to pay special attention to the soil's pH balance. If the soil is too acidic or alkaline, most plants won't be able to obtain the nutrients they need to grow.
Don't underestimate the visual appeal of grass
A lot of people reading this probably only think about the kind of grass that they have when it's time to cut it, but planting a new variety could be exactly what you need to improve the look of your backyard. Some grasses grow to be a deep green hue, while others are lighter and fresher looking. Some species of grass can give your lawn a nice plush feel, as well. Make sure to take the type of soil into consideration when planting grass: some types grow easily and naturally without excess water, while others will be a struggle to keep green because the soil does not agree with them.
