Day 4: Exploration

Established camp in Echoback Canyon. Sent a contingent of Inquisition soldiers ahead of us to Skyhold with Crassius Servis in custody. There are a few rifts left nearby. Maybe I can convince Vivienne and Blackwall to head back early.

—One of many similarly neat and concise entries from the journal of Inquisitor Genevieve Lavellan. Wildlife sketches, with labels in both Elvish and Trade, decorate the margins for about one year before the journal becomes entirely utilitarian once again.

Day 3: Courtyard

The amputation itself was a success. The Herald has spent the better part of the last four days unconscious. Our healers have been hard at work trying to bring her temperature down and keep her comfortable. The wisps are becoming a nuisance. I’ve tried to lock them out of the infirmary, but they keep finding their way back in. You older lot must have had measures to keep them from your sick beds. Should we be worried about demons? If she’s trapped somewhere in the Fade, delirious...I just need to know that’s something Fen’harel has planned for.

Atisha, ladarelan. Fen’harel has kept one eye closed. The Inquisitor will be a valuable asset to our cause. He would not have brought her here otherwise.

The pages of this book—memory?—describe a bustling community center full of life. Naked elves sigh as they allow the heat of the baths to seep into their weary bones and relax their aching muscles. The water here, on the outskirts of the city, has no magical properties except what the Earth below has to offer. Spirits drift and swoop and sing under the golden ceiling. Children’s play and laughter can be heard nearby. The furnishing of this place is modest compared to the Gods’ own bathhouses, gilded thus only so as to not offend the aesthetics of their Great City.

The scene tastes like an alien camaraderie, viewed by an outsider with envy at these elves’ and spirits’ warm communion but with the wisdom not to disturb their well-won peace.
