Fresh and very good news: the modernist architecture of Tashkent, Uzbekistan, has been included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.

I think it's a wonderful thing for lovers of architecture from a period that is particularly sensitive and difficult in terms of preservation, besides the fact that Tashkent's architecture is truly amazing.

watching stuff with kids in it and talking to adults about kids is so fucking weird as someone who works with kids. it is extremely transparent that very few people ever interact with kids, so they just fully forget what they're like and lump them into a broad category of essentially toddlers with different levels of speech capability.

I genuinely believe the stringent age-based separation most of us are experiencing is one of the single most destructive forces in our society. you need to interact with people of all ages regularly or you start to get all "think of the children" and "parent's rights" and fucking "11 year olds can't comprehend basic ratios". or, worse and frankly way more common for leftists, "I hate kids they're so annoying" or "kids are fine I just never want to interact with them if I can help it".

They are people. they have complex thoughts and emotions and knowledge. they are aware of the political goings on in the world, and they think deeply and talk frequently about the issues that impact you (often because those issues impact them as well, but often even when they don't!). they share space with you in your communities, locally and online, whether you're aware of them or think of them as part of your communities or not.

you need to talk to them regularly so you can remember that they are people, the ways in which they are people, the kinds of people they are, the needs they have, and how to advocate for them in a society that increasingly flattens them to varying sizes of toddler. or, if nothing else, so you can share your communities with them instead of expecting them to take what they can get and fit themselves in however makes you, personally, most comfortable.

the REASON I think it's so destructive is that interacting with kids is one of the ways we learn how to take care of other people & appreciate and accept ways of thinking, acting, and feeling that aren't in the narrow range of what's considered acceptable by larger society.

It challenges us to reason our ideas out from a basic level where we can't take certain things for granted, and to test our values in ways the adults around us don't challenge us to do anymore because we're mostly operating from the same basic cultural assumptions and values.

It forces us to understand other adults better, because we see the line between how & why children act, and how & why adults act. So many behaviors are clearly the result of unmet needs, but as adults we're taught that we aren't supposed to act like we have unmet needs anymore, or we're taught that the behaviors and ways of thinking that result from unmet needs are just normal, even and especially when they're unhealthy and destructive.

It teaches us compassion for ourselves. It teaches us compassion for others. It teaches us to view young people as complex and intelligent and valuable. It teaches us why autonomy is important.

Humans have been interacting across generational boundaries for as long as we've existed. It is so fucking weird that virtually only parents and teachers ever interact with kids anymore, and everyone else not only lives in an adult-exclusive bubble, but firmly believes they're entitled to- or even NEED- that bubble.

No you aren't. No you don't. You're out of touch and deeply strange and you are drifting further and further from a grounded perception of reality because you have severed yourself from the first and most significant quarter of human existence.

And most horrifying yet, our society is starting to see any adult who is so much as friendly towards children as a sure danger.

Offer to babysit your nieces & nephews, go to a fair or a festival, volunteer at an afterschool care thing or a teen center once a month, talk to your young family and your friends' young family, introduce yourself to your neighbors and offer your number in case they need anything, make small talk at the bus stop or the grocery store, go to volunteer events and the park, idk. It's getting harder every day to be a part of your community and it's making us weird and cruel. Whatever you can do to stay even a little bit connected to the most influential quarter of human experiences is better than nothing.
